BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- China's parliament on Thursday adopted the Law on Guarding State Secrets and the amended State Compensation Law at the closing session.Wu Bangguo，chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People' s Congress, or the top legislature, presided over the closing of the four-day bimonthly session.Wu said, the amendment to the State Compensation Law will regulate the use of public power, protect legitimate rights and interests of citizens, legal persons and social organizations. The 14th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) concludes in Beijing, capital of China, on April 29, 2010. Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the concluding meeting.Wu said, the Law on Guarding State Secrets has made clear legal liability in guarding state secrets, which will help safeguard the state security and interests.The legislature also reviewed the report on migrant workers which stressed protecting the rights and interests of this group and improving social services for them. BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese police officer Sunday urged public security organs at all levels to ensure public order during the upcoming Children's Day and the national college entrance examination in early June."Security measures in kindergartens and schools must be fully implemented and loopholes must be found out," said Vice Minister of Public Security Huang Ming at a video conference.A string of attacks has shocked the country over the past few months and school security has been tightened. Police nationwide have began a thorough inspection of schools and nurseries, especially private ones and those in rural and remote areas, to close security loopholes."Public security organs at all levels must work with kindergartens and schools to ensure that kids will have a safe and happy Children's Day," Huang said.Huang stressed that the permanent mechanism for the safety in kindergartens and schools should be established.He also urged police officers to clamp down on cheating activities with high-tech devices during the college entrance examination, as well as criminal behaviors that disturb the examination and its participants.

YUSHU, Qinghai, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao visited quake-hit Yushu in northwest China's Qinghai Province Sunday, vowing to help victims rebuild their homes as most of them now settle in tents with basic needs met.The 7.1-magnitude quake, which struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu Wednesday morning, had left at least 1,706 dead, 256 missing and 12,128 injured, as of 10 a.m. Sunday.THERE WILL BE NEW HOMESIn a morale-raising visit to quake-hit Yushu, Hu assured locals of new homes and schools and steadfast relief work."There will be new schools! There will be new homes!" The man was later taken to hospital.Rescuers had saved 17,000 trapped people and a total of 6,870 people had been pulled out from under the rubble of collapsed buildings, among whom 6,110 survived, Miao Chonggang, deputy head of the China Earthquake Administration's quake relief and emergency response department, told a press conference.Miao said currently more than 15,000 rescuers, including over 11,000 from the People's Liberation Army and armed police, 2,800 firefighters and special police forces, and 1,500 earthquake and mine accident rescuers, are still searching for quake survivors in Yushu.

NANNING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from rain-triggered landslides and flooding in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region rose to 44 Thursday.Eight people were still missing, said a statement from the regional flood control and drought relief headquarters.In Rongxian County alone, the death toll climbed to 27 after four more bodies were recovered Thursday.In Cenxi County, 12 people were confirmed dead as of Wednesday night.Three deaths were reported in Tengxian County, Donglan County and Fangchenggang City.Rescuers search for trapped persons in Beigeng Township, Xincheng County, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, June 3, 2010.Two primary school students, sisters aged 8 and 10, had been found drowned in Laibin City where flooding forced many schools to suspend classes.More than 600 residents in two villages in Laibin had been evacuated because of land subsidence Thursday. Four pits and cracks were reported near the villages, with the biggest having a diameter of more than 70 meters and depth of 20 meters.Increased water flow in underground rivers in wake of the torrential rains could have caused the subsidence, a Laibin municipal government official said.Heavy rains began pounding Guangxi Monday and triggered landslides early Wednesday.Across Guangxi, the rainstorms had battered 27 counties and 144,800 people had been evacuated by 4 p.m. Thursday, the regional civil affairs bureau said.In addition, 8,123 houses had collapsed and 161,830 hectares of crops had been damaged. The direct economic losses were estimated at 1.2 billion yuan (176 million U.S. dollars).
