SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's unemployment rate ticked down to 14.8%, but a potential new wave of closures could wipe out a large portion of the recent job gains.The San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday that the jobless rate in the region is continuing to drop from a peak of 25% on May 9. Still, roughly 250,000 workers in the county remain unemployed amid the Coronavirus outbreak. Ray Major, the agency's chief economist, said the increased spread of the virus could lead to prolonged economic frustration. "What (the report) shows is that we're ready to go back to work, but that the recovery is probably going to be slow, and we're probably going to be having this conversation with double digit unemployment throughout the summer and probably into the fall," he said. The potential drawbacks would take a financial and mental toll on thousands of workers who returned to their jobs, only to be sent back to file for unemployment. Season and Ian McKesson had to close their two hair salons when the pandemic broke in March and got by on unemployment. "It was hard working 50 to 60 hours a week and being proud that you can maintain everything and then all of a sudden you can't do anything. It was almost like being ripped apart, for me," Season said. The McKessons had to shutter their Mission Hills salon permanently but did reopen their Fallbrook location, called Mary Jane North. That cleared the way for seven stylists, including them, to go back to work. "We get nervous because there's things that are still shutting down around, and so that's a little daunting," Season said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County homebuyers could be gaining an upper hand in negotiations as the region's housing market slows.A new report from real-estate tracker CoreLogic says 2,936 homes changed hands in San Diego County in November, an 11 percent drop from November 2017. Meanwhile, the rate of home-price appreciation slowed to 4.6 percent year-over-year. The median home price was 5,000 in November."It's a good time to get in there," said Mark Goldman, a San Diego loan officer with C-2 Financial. "There's more selection of homes to purchase, and there's probably sellers who are more willing to consider offers maybe a little bit below their list price, and so forth."CoreLogic says Southern California as a whole has seen its biggest sales drop in three years. The company says higher interest rates and the volatile stock market could be contributing to buyer pullback. The average rate for a 30-year-fixed is now 4.55 percent, up about a half percent from a year ago. Goldman said qualifying families, even with a few percent cash down, should be able to get an offer accepted in this market."Be cautious, make an offer at a good price, work with a professional realtor who can guide you to a reasonable price, but if you're going to be in that house five years or so, I think you'll be happy," Goldman said.Goldman said the market is coasting at a rate of appreciation that is more sustainable. He said the 6 to 8 percent annual price growth could not last with wages not growing nearly as fast, he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell on Tuesday is expected to formally announce enforcement plans to help with concerns over crowd control in Ocean Beach.Campbell, who represents District 2, said in a news release, “Our office continues to field calls regarding increased crowds gathering at Veteran’s Plaza in Ocean Beach on Wednesday evenings. While I appreciate the San Diego Police Department’s increased presence last week, it’s clear more comprehensive action needs to be taken to keep San Diegans safe.”Residents in the area say large gatherings have been consistently happening despite San Diego County public health orders restricting mass gatherings.According to OB residents, big crowds assemble Wednesday nights at Veteran’s Plaza, and many attendees are seen not wearing masks or practicing social distancing.Ocean Beach Town Council President Mark Winkie told ABC 10News in a previous interview that residents “want people to understand this is our community. You’re welcome to be here, but you need to adhere to social distancing rules and respect our community.”Winkie has met with City of San Diego officials about the gatherings in OB. He said the city was looking to shut down Veteran’s Plaza to help with enforcement.On Tuesday morning, ABC 10News spotted city crews placing plastic netting at the park.While he said the town council is not happy the park is closing, Winkie said a closure would allow needed renovations at the park to be done.The OB Town Council has also been pushing for more education to remind people about following the rules.Winkie said he’s been told health officials will be at Veterans Plaza on Wednesday nights to spread the word about county health guidelines. 1746
