SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and elements of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group deployed from San Diego Monday in support of global maritime security operations, Navy officials announced.Prior to departing, the strike group completed a composite training unit exercise called COMPTUEX, which is designed to fully integrate units of a carrier strike group while testing its ability as a whole to carry out sustained combat operations from the sea.Ships, squadrons and staffs have been tested across every core warfare area within their mission sets through a variety of simulated and live events, including air warfare, strait transits, and responses to surface and subsurface contacts and electronic attacks, according to U.S. Third Fleet public affairs."The carrier strike group team is trained and ready," said Rear Adm. Jim Kirk, commander of the strike group. "The men and women of Carrier Strike Group 11 have demonstrated exceptional tactical and technical expertise, teamwork and toughness. We are honored to answer the call and operate forward."In addition to conducting maritime security operations whenever and wherever called upon, strike-group units will participate in cooperative engagements, multilateral exercises and unit-level training designed to improve capability and capacity among Navy units and partner nations in the regions they may operate in.All personnel assigned to the group completed a minimum 14-day quarantine ashore and were tested for COVID-19 prior to getting underway with their respective units. Sailors assigned to Nimitz completed a 27-day fast cruise aboard the ship which also included their testing period for the virus.In addition to the Nimitz, deploying units include Carrier Air Wing 17, Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton and Destroyer Squadron 9, which includes Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Sterett and USS Ralph Johnson.Sterett departed Naval Base San Diego on Thursday, Princeton steamed out on Saturday and Ralph Johnson is scheduled to leave Tuesday, according to the Navy. 2094

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council will take a look at the Riverwalk San Diego project Tuesday, a proposed transit-oriented neighborhood development along the San Diego River in Mission Valley.International real estate firm Hines has proposed the 200-acre project, which is intended to transform the existing Riverwalk golf course into a neighborhood as well as restore the stretch of the San Diego River that runs through it.According to Hines, if the plan is approved Tuesday, the company plans to break ground during the second half of 2021.The San Diego Planning Commission recommended approval of Riverwalk San Diego project on Oct. 22 with five in favor, one abstention and one commissioner absent.The Hines plan includes 4,300 homes -- 10% of which are planned to be affordable housing -- a Metropolitan Transit System Green Line trolley stop, 152,000-square-feet of retail space, 1 million square feet of office space, 100 acres of parks and new bike and pedestrian paths, including an extension of the San Diego River Trail."I think it could be something to set the standard for what transit- oriented development can look like," said San Diego Planning Commissioner Vicki Granowitz.The Riverwalk plan, established through a partnership between Hines and the Levi-Cushman family landowners, incorporates community input gathered over several years by the Hines team in nearly 100 stakeholder and community planning group meetings."We appreciate that the planning commissioners recognized the extensive community outreach and collaboration that helped form our plan and the care we're taking to create an environmentally responsible, transit- oriented legacy project for San Diego," said Eric Hepfer, managing director at Hines. 1754

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Lucky Duck Foundation announced a million region-wide homeless employment and jobs training initiative Friday, aiming to hire and train people experiencing homelessness to secure long-term employment.An anonymous donor gave the million gift in grants to expand existing programs and launch new ones, including culinary skills, homeless outreach, community beautification work, youth support services and intensive job training.The donor asked the foundation to focus on high-impact programs to help people on the streets.FACING IT TOGETHER: How San Diego is working to end homelessness"The Lucky Duck Foundation is honored to work with our generous donor to establish a results-oriented, best-in-class strategy for reducing homelessness," said Stephanie Kilkenny, the foundation's co-founder and president. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the mayors of the other so-called Big 11 cities secured a total of 0 million in state funding to address homelessness issues in the state's biggest cities.The city will allocate .8 million for homeless services like housing navigation, .2 million for rental assistance and subsidies, .6 million for the continuation of city services and facilities like San Diego's three bridge shelters and 5,000 each for youth programs and administration costs."Thanks to the advocacy by California's largest cities, we can now implement these critical programs to improve our outreach, expand the range and depth of homeless services including prevention and diversion strategies, and bring creative solutions online to move hundreds of homeless San Diegans off the streets and into housing," said District 3 City Councilman Chris Ward.The funds will be used to expand some existing programs while creating new ones, such as a flexible subsidy pool that offers housing assistance to residents who may not qualify for federal housing vouchers.
