One person in California has died from the E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday. This is the first death from this outbreak.The agency reported 23 additional cases of illness bringing the total number of cases to 121 since the outbreak began in March.Fifty-two individuals have been hospitalized.Kentucky, Massachusetts and Utah are the latest states to report illnesses bringing the total number of states impacted to 25.Health officials are continuing to investigate the source of the ongoing outbreak but still have not been able to identify a single grower, farm, manufacturer, supplier or brand.The-CNN-Wire 735

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A fire broke out Tuesday morning at Fire Station 3 in Oceanside when no first responders were inside to put it out. The flames broke out in a rear dorm room on the second floor adjacent to a furnace in the wall, said Oceanside Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Stein. People driving by saw the fire at 3101 Oceanside Blvd. and reported it, said Stein. Twenty-seven firefighters from Carlsbad and other stations in Oceanside responded to the scene to put out the fire. The five Oceanside firefighters who were on duty with Station 3 were not available at the time the flames broke out. The second floor of the station was damaged by smoke and flames, Stein said. The first floor had minimal damage. “This is really a hit to the city because it’s centrally located,” Stein said. Although Stein did not have an estimate on when repairs would be completed, he said Fire Station 3 firefighters would be displaced at least a month. “We’re relocating them to other fire stations throughout the city,” said Stein. OAKLAND, Calif. -- The United States Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.5 has struck just outside of Oakland. The earthquake struck at 7:18 p.m. just two miles outside of Oakland Monday. No damage or injuries are being reported. The USGS originally reported that the earthquake was a 3.8 magnitude, then a 3.6. The quake was eventually downgraded to a 3.5.  439

(AP) — A worker doing an inspection on a popular central Florida thrill ride was killed Monday after falling more than 50 feet.Orange County Fire Rescue tweeted that firefighters responded to the Orlando StarFlyer ride early Monday after receiving a report that the 21-year-old man had fallen. The unidentified worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.The ride wasn’t moving at the time.At 450 feet, the Orlando StarFlyer is billed as the world’s tallest swing ride. Visitors in swings rotate around a pole reaching speeds up to 45 mph. The ride is located on International Drive, the busy tourist corridor in Orlando. 659

On Tuesday, Casey Louviere was mowing her yard in Louisiana when she suddenly passed out from heat exhaustion."I started seeing stars, and suddenly everything was black," Louviere said.She says she thought she was fine, as she had been drinking water at the time."Just simply went outside to cut grass, it was so hot. You know, I was fine, then everything just turned black. The heat is not something to play with," Louviere explained.Officials with the Scott Fire Department say they responded to the call on Rue Bon Secours of a person unconscious in their front yard."SFD began assessing the patient and administering basic life support interventions. Acadian Ambulance medics arrived, and the patient was transported to a local hospital," a release states. But the firefighters didn't just help Louviere medically.The firefighters stayed with her children until a friend was able to come over. They also came back to finish mowing her lawn."Something like that brings tears to your eyes, knowing that there are still good people out there like that," she said. "They took time out of their day to cut my grass and they didn't have to do that.""We didn't have to do it. We didn't do it to get recognition by any means, but we wanted to bless her and bless her family. Her grass was high and we wanted to help her," Fire Captain Kris Gumpert said.However, Louviere says she did not know the job was finished until she saw it on Facebook."I'm working from home currently, so I didn't walk outside this morning.
