CARSON (CNS) - San Diego State is scheduled to begin in its coronavirus-delayed football season tonight against UNLV at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, its home for this season and next as SDCCU Stadium is demolished and Aztec Stadium is built.San Diego State initially planned to make 2020 its final season at SDCCU Stadium, where it had played since 1967, but being able to expedite its demolition and construction of Aztec Stadium and the stadium's condition when the university took ownership of it from the city prompted a change of plans, according to athletic director John David Wicker.``The building was not in very good condition when we took it over,'' Wicker said at a Sept. 15 news conference announcing the decision. ``The amount of effort and dollars to get it up to speed to have people able to come in was somewhat challenging.''The university considered a site in San Diego to play its games until the planned opening of Aztec Stadium in 2022, ``but when you think about a Division 1 football experience and all of the different things that go along with that there wasn't a venue in town that was going to be consistently available for us to play in,'' Wicker said.``We just didn't think there were any venues in San Diego that could satisfy what we wanted to present for our student-athletes and also our fans,'' Wicker said.``As you think about some of the things around the game, our television partners and having the ability to come in and set up and do the television experience we want to put out led us to where we are today.''Fans will not be allowed to attend Saturday's game because of state health orders related to the coronavirus pandemic. He succeeds Rocky Long, who retired on Jan. 8, then on Jan. 27 was hired as New Mexico's defensive coordinator on his 70th birthday.Hoke coached San Diego State to a 13-12 record in 2009 and 2010, including a 35-14 victory over Navy in the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl, the Aztecs' first bowl game since 1998.Hoke then coached Michigan from 2011-14, getting fired in 2014 after the Wolverines were 7-6 and 5-7 in his final two seasons. (AP) — A newly discovered comet is streaking past Earth, providing a stunning nighttime show after buzzing the sun and expanding its tail.Comet Neowise was spotted by the NASA space telescope bearing that name in March.Since then, the comet — called comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE— has been spotted by several NASA spacecraft, observatories, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station.The celestial snowball swept within Mercury's orbit a week ago. Its close proximity to the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris tail.NASA says the comet is about 3 miles across. "From its infrared signature, we can tell that it is about 5 kilometers [3 miles] across, and by combining the infrared data with visible-light images, we can tell that the comet's nucleus is covered with sooty, dark particles left over from its formation near the birth of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago," said Joseph Masiero, NEOWISE deputy principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.The comet will be visible across the Northern Hemisphere until mid-August, when it heads back toward the outer solar system.People wishing to catch a glimpse of the glowing comet can spot it as it swings through the inner solar system, but its nearness to the Sun creates some observing challenges.As it speeds away from the Sun, NASA says the comet will begin to make its appearance in the evening sky shortly after sunset on July 11 or July 12, depending on local conditions.“Observers might be able to see the comet's central core, or nucleus, with the naked eye in dark skies; using binoculars will give viewers a good look at the fuzzy comet and its long, streaky tail,” said NASA. 1759

CASEY COUNTY, Kent. -- A man in Kentucky not only pulled over but got out of his vehicle to pay his respects while a funeral procession passed. The family was moved by the man's kindness and posted about it on social media and has since gone viral.Cecil Luster was a member of the U.S. Navy. His family celebrated his life yesterday in Casey County. Many drivers pulled over for the procession, led by the Patriot Guard of Kentucky. Cecil's grandson, Drew Richardson, says there was one driver, who was standing outside of his vehicle, who caught his family's attention."When my mom was talking about it afterward, there were tears welling up in her eyes, that someone actually showed respect for our family," Drew Richardson said.Standing with his hands crossed, it was a simple act of kindness that moved the entire family.Mark Meece says he didn't even think twice about getting out of his vehicle and he got the idea from a social media post."I've seen on Facebook where a soldier was standing outside in the rain, and I thought, you know, I need to start doing that to show respect. It was an inspiration to me," Meece said.The family shared the good deed on Facebook and it's been shared and commented on hundreds of times. Meece says the positivity of the social media post has encouraged him. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - “Right now, it’s worse than I’ve ever seen it in my life. I see a new face come through here every day,” says Gregory Parada of Carlsbad. He has been homeless for several years.The City of Carlsbad reports there’s a growing number of homeless people in the community. A team of specially-trained police officers have been doing homeless outreach for the last eight months. As of last week, the City Council approved a 5,000 contract with Interfaith Community Services which will provide two full time socials workers to assist with outreach in the field. On Saturday, 10News was granted permission to ride along with law enforcement during “compassion enforcement”, as the city calls it. “That's as simple as connecting them to a family member [or they] might have hygiene needs and we have hygiene kits that we got from a bunch of nonprofits," says Sgt. Bryan Hargett. These officers are working to get the homeless population the items and services they need. The city of San Diego still has a much bigger homeless population than Carlsbad. According to San Diego County’s WeAllCount report, there are 4,912 homeless people in the City of San Diego. There are only 210 homeless people in the City of Carlsbad, but that’s up from 160 homeless people in Carlsbad last year.Davye Sauermilch tells us she’s considering getting help after her interactions with the officers. "My boyfriend's now in rehab because of these guys,” she adds.“I guess they protect me. I feel fine about them,” says Parada. Sgt. Hargett explains, “If they don't trust us, we're not going to be able to work together.” He adds, “One of the things we're learning about being out here is consistency. It could take us 30 contacts [with a person] and on the 31st they're like, ‘Hey, I want help now.’”Outreach coordinators will report back to the City Council on the progress of the initiative later this year. 1927

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police have identified the suspects who reportedly attacked a Carlsbad woman, stabbing her to death during an attempted burglary Monday morning. According to police, Ian Bushee, 37, and Malissa James, 26, who are both transients, were arrested on the 4800 block of Park Drive Monday. Both are on probation in San Bernardino for residential burglary. Police say Bushee was arrested for homicide, burglary, conspiracy, auto theft and accessory after the fact. James was arrested for homicide, burglary, conspiracy and auto theft. “The Police Department shares the communities’ concern over such a tragic incident,” Police Chief Neil Gallucci said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family.”The incident was reported at around 12:30 a.m. at a home in the 1800 block of Outrigger Lane, just north of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, according to Carlsbad police.MUST-READ: Victims in deadly paragliding accident at Torrey Pines Gliderport identifiedPolice said the suspects broke into the home, and during the break-in, a woman in the house was stabbed. She was taken to the hospital but died from her injuries at Scripps La Jolla Hospital about an hour later.After the incident, police say both Bushee and James fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle.
