It’s no surprise that summer means frequent afternoon thunderstorms and downpours in many areas throughout the United States. While wet weather has plenty of benefits, storms leave behind bacteria-riddled puddles. And that can make your (perfectly innocent!) dog very sick.In the wake of wet weather, pets — particularly dogs that spend time outdoors — are more at risk of contracting leptospirosis and giardia. Don’t panic, though — both are treatable and pets will usually make a full recovery if the symptoms aren’t ignored, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). However, even in mild cases, they can create a headache for owners as their pet’s body fights off the illness.First up: leptospirosis. This is an infection caused by leptospira bacteria, which is found in soil and water. This usually affects dogs and is less common in cats, according to AVMA.Pets will typically come into contact with this bacteria after heavy rainfalls or while playing in or drinking out of rivers, lakes, streams and other standing water, or after exposure to wild animals. Leptospira, often called lepto, lives in standing water and mud. Pets can become infected if the bacteria moves from the source to the mucus membranes in a dog’s mouth or an open wound, according to AVMA. It’s then spread through the body via the bloodstream. Leptospirosis can vary from mild to severe, but the sooner it’s treated, the better. If your dog is infected, they may display the 1491
It’s that time of year again, when tech companies from around the globe converge in Las Vegas to show off their latest gadgets in tech. It’s the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) conference, and everything from virtual reality to massage chairs are featured at the event. At the Dreamwave booth, CEO Cliff Levin showcased the companies new massage chair.“Our desire was to create something to take people to a place that we called their dream wave, their happy place,” he says. The ,000 massage chair was designed by a combination of Japanese shiatsu experts and a designer who does interiors for Maserati and Porsche. There are also other high-tech gadgets that help with health and wellness. French company Withings featured their heart monitor cuff, which reads your blood pressure, while recording an electro cardiogram. The company says the device helps identify the heart condition atrial fibrillation. And there’s really tech for everything, it seems. In a remarkable admission, German Cardinal Reinhard Marx said Saturday that documents that could have contained proof of clergy sexual abuse in the Catholic Church were destroyed or never drawn up."Files that could have documented the terrible deeds and named those responsible were destroyed or not even created," said Marx, the archbishop of Munich and president of the German Bishops' Conference."The stipulated procedures and processes for the prosecution offenses were deliberately not complied with," he added, "but instead canceled and overridden."Such standard practices will make it clear that it is not transparency which damages the church, but rather the acts of abuse committed, the lack of transparency, or the ensuing coverup."Marx's stunning admission came on the third day of a historic Vatican summit focused on combating clergy sexual abuse. The day's theme was transparency, which Marx said could help to tackle abuse of power.A member of Pope Francis' inner circle of advisers, Marx is one of the most powerful men in the Catholic Church. The four-day summit of 190 Catholic leaders, including 114 bishops from around the world, will conclude Sunday with an address by Pope Francis. On Thursday, at the beginning of the unprecedented summit, Francis urged the bishops to take "concrete measures" to combat the clergy abuse scandal. At a press conference later Saturday, Marx said that the information about destroying files came from a study commissioned by German bishops in 2014. The study was "scientific" and did not name the particular church leaders or dioceses in Germany that destroyed the files."The study indicates that some documents were manipulated or did not contain what they should have contained," Marx said. "The fact in itself cannot be denied."Marx said he doubts the destruction of files related to clergy sexual abuse was limited to one diocese."I assume Germany is not an isolated case."The report commissioned by the German bishops also revealed that "at least" 3,677 cases of child sex abuse by German clergy occurred between 1946 and 2014. 2096

It was a quiet afternoon at the White House toward the end of a four-day week. Network correspondents were preparing for their evening newscasts, cameramen were scattered throughout the briefing room and outside, some reporters had stepped out for coffee.Minutes after 4:00 p.m., a voice came on the overhead speaker announcing that press secretary Sarah Sanders would hold a briefing in "five minutes."The scramble was on.For a White House that has held increasingly rare briefings, the short notice was unusual yet not surprising. And as the press appearances have shrunk, the importance of each opportunity to ask questions has increased.Still photographers ran to secure their spots. Television camera crews and audio technicians rushed to turn on, focus and color balance cameras and wire up correspondents for live shots. The White House audiovisual staff turned the podium microphones on and the lights up at the last minute. And when Sanders took the podium, instead of taking questions she introduced a "very special guest" -- the President of the United States."Hello, everybody, beautiful place, I haven't seen it," President Donald Trump said as he walked in, wishing the press assembled a happy new year.Thursday marked Trump's first official appearance at the briefing room podium nearly two years into his administration. But despite being billed as a press briefing, and taking place in the briefing room, Trump did not deliver a briefing (he took no questions) and instead gave a statement pressing for his border wall. His visit was such a surprise that the podium wasn't dressed with a presidential seal. Journalists were still filling in seats in around the back of the briefing room, which is normally packed and standing room only for briefings, as the President began to speak. He offered his warm congratulations to newly elected House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, praising what he called her "tremendous, tremendous achievement."On the first day of divided government during his administration, Trump cited infrastructure as one area where the White House could work with the Democratic-controlled House. Then, Trump made a push for his border wall, introducing some members of the National Border Patrol Council and National ICE Council. The remarks came on the 13th day of a partial government shutdown as Democrats have officially taken control of the House and negotiations to fund the government have reached a stalemate due to ongoing disputes about border security and wall funding. The White House won't say whether the President would accept a funding package with less than billion for a border wall, but leadership from both parties in Congress are expected to meet with the President at the White House Friday morning. The President said he had been sitting in the Oval Office with the border patrol agents in a previously scheduled meeting and decided he wanted to "see the press" so the agents could "tell them about the importance of the wall.""First time I've ever done this. The first time I've done it, and I've done it for you (the National Border Patrol Council members). And I'm very proud of it," he said.Trump refused to take questions about the government shutdown, walking out of the briefing room along with the border patrol agents, Sanders, communications director Bill Shine and social media director Dan Scavino, a mere eight minutes after entering. One reporter, who had gotten word of the briefing but was across town on Capitol Hill, rushed back across Pennsylvania Avenue, but missed it altogether."It was over before I even got there," the reporter texted. 3618
