SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At Fleet Week, the Osprey MV-22 is on display, on the USS Harper's Ferry's flight deck, a controversial aircraft after dozens died during training. Crews say now it's much safer.The unique aircraft transforms from a helicopter to a plane mid-flight. The trouble, four crashes killed 30 people during training missions from 1991-2000."Most every system on that aircraft has a triple redundant system, so that if there is a failure the other two systems pick up the slack," Corporal Tyler Gartin said. Over the years, the advanced, one-of-a-kind system has been constantly updated, making safety a priority.RELATED: Fleet Week San Diego brings hands-on experiences to publicThe Marines onboard the USS Harper's Ferry say it's indispensable."We can land it anywhere we want to just like a helicopter, but then we have that extreme range of an aircraft," Captain Vinnie Gallo with the US Marine Corps said they can refuel while flying, extending the range exponentially.Another quality setting this bird apart, speed. "Basically it's going to suck you back into your seat, and everyone in the back is going to feel that, get pulled to the side. It's a pretty good force, feels like a sports car," Gallo said.RELATED: Honor Flight San Diego: Military veterans take off for 'Tour of Honor'Both Gallo and Gartin say the technological updates make the aircraft safe, and they're not concerned when they take her up."There was a tragedy out in Kumamoto, a terrible earthquake, a lot of people were stranded, injured and didn't have a whole lot of supplies," Gartin said he was in Japan for the relief effort. "The Osprey was able to land in places that other aircraft were not able to, and carry out a much higher payload than any other helicopter possibly could have. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Victims in a vehicle vandalism spree in Lakeside are hopeful for a break in the case, after the teen vandals apparently recorded and shared their exploits.From a broken side mirror and a cracked sunroof to the green-colored graffiti, Stephanie Starkey's Tuesday night discovery was painful."I cried. It hurt. I love my car," said Starkey.Starkey says she had taken 2011 Hyundai Sonata into a mechanic, who parked it on Woodside Avenue. Along that street, at least three other vehicles were spray-painted and one car was keyed. Some of that vandalism played out on cellphone video. Deputies say they're looking over an 8-second video, which has been shared on Instagram, showing a teen smashing Starkey's car several times with a skateboard. In the video, several voices can be heard laughing. "Can't even describe the feeling of emptiness. A hurt, broken feeling. I'm getting ready for a new job. Now I have no way to get to work ... It's obviously something they get an adrenaline rush out of ... Disgusted. Kids with nothing better to do," said Starkey.Deputies say they have not yet made an arrest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the March 2020 Presidential Primary approaching, the San Diego Registrar of Voters is urging everyone to make sure they are registered properly."This one election is the most complex elections for administrators like ourselves and voters that are out there," says Registrar Michael Vu.With six political parties holding presidential primaries, plus the dozens of overlapping state and local district elections, Vu expects to create more than 12,000 unique versions of the ballot. Rules on who can vote in each party make it even more complicated.In December, Vu's office sent out more than 500,000 mailers to voters to make sure they know the options.Anyone registered with a specific party will only be allowed to vote in that party's primary. Republicans will vote for the Republican candidates, Democrats for Democrats and so on.But, right now more then 30 percent of registered voters in San Diego are listed as "No-Party Preference."For those people, they can choose to vote in the primary for American Independent, Democrat, or Libertarian parties. They cannot vote in the Republican, Green, or Peace and Freedom parties."It makes it a little more confusing," says Vu. "Something that voters need to know what political party status they are in. And if it’s different from the presidential candidates they want to vote for, they need to register or re-register now."To help voters navigate their options, the Registrar has set up a website where people can get all the information they need.The deadline to choose a party, or to choose which primary you want to vote in, is January 6."If you’re a non-partisan voter, now is the time to act," says Vu.
