SAN BRUNO, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Bruno Police Department has identified the YouTube shooter as 39-year-old Nasim Najafi Aghdam. Aghdam reportedly drove to YouTube headquarters from San Diego, KRON reported Tuesday evening. Aghdam was a YouTube user who has a website with a manifesto that targets the platform for censorship and demonization of her content, according to ABC7. Law enforcement officials said Aghdam had previous addresses in San Diego and Riverside Counties and lived in a home in Menifee, Calif. with her parents. RELATED: 610
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Zoo has two new arrivals: a pair of endangered African penguin chicks. The zoo announced Wednesday that the fluffy chicks, named Doug and Barbara, hatched two months ago.The eggs came from two breeding couples. The zoo says it's the first time eggs laid by its adult penguins have hatched there.Staff has been working with the chicks to get them used to humans before they are introduced into the penguin colony in the next few weeks.African penguins are an endangered species. Their numbers have dropped by more than 60% in the past three decades and only 23,000 breeding pairs are known to exist. The decline is blamed on several factors, including disease, habitat destruction and lack of food from overfishing, climate change and pollution. 781
SAN DIEGO — Three teenagers were taken into custody in three separate attempts to smuggle fentanyl across the U.S.-Mexico border, according to federal officials.U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said the incidents occurred on March 30 and 31 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry near San Diego, California. On Friday, CBP agents stopped a 17-year-old Mexican citizen. After noticing an "anomaly" on the teen's back, agents conducted a pat down and found two packages strapped to his back. The packages contained four pounds of fentanyl — a street value of 1,000.The next day, CBP agents stopped two more male teens within 10 minutes of each other: a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old. Both were found to have packages of fentanyl strapped to their backs. The two combined were carrying about nine pounds of drugs, a street value of more than 6,000.The teens in each case were arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations. The all drugs were seized by CBP officers.According to Pete Flores, the director of Field Operations for Customs and Border Protection in San Diego, Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more deadly than heroin."Please understand that no matter what you may be told, there are consequences for engaging in this type of activity, not to mention the dangers of working with transnational criminal organizations,” he said, 1383
Sales of existing homes are up nearly 21 percent over a year ago, September sales were about 9.4 percent higher than just the month before. The National Association of Realtors says there were more than 6.5 million sales of single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops in the month of September. The median price for these sales was 1,800. The monthly median sale price has increased for 103 months in a row, according to the NAR.There were 5.4 million sales of existing homes in September 2019, with a median sale price of 1,500.Home-buying continues to be a bright spot in the economy during the coronavirus pandemic."Home sales traditionally taper off toward the end of the year, but in September they surged beyond what we normally see during this season," said Lawrence Yun, NAR's chief economist, in a press release. "I would attribute this jump to record-low interest rates and an abundance of buyers in the marketplace, including buyers of vacation homes given the greater flexibility to work from home."In fact, the NAR says sales in so-called vacation destination counties have increased 34 percent year-over-year.However, supply is dwindling. The NAR estimates there is only about a 2.7-month supply of unsold existing homes given the current sales pace. That’s down from a 3-month supply in August and a 4-month supply from a year ago."There is no shortage of hopeful, potential buyers, but inventory is historically low," Yun said. "To their credit, we have seen some homebuilders move to ramp up supply, but a need for even more production still exists."For homes being listed for sale, about 70 percent were on the market for less than a month. 1683
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Voting will look a little different this November. States are turning to stadiums, drive-thrus and possibly even movie theaters as safe options for in-person polling places amid the coronavirus pandemic and fears about mail-in ballots failing to arrive in time to count. The primary season brought voters to an outdoor wedding-style tent in Vermont and the state fairgrounds in Kentucky. The general election is expected to include polling places at NBA arenas nationwide as part of an agreement owners made with players to combat racial injustice. While a surge in mail-in voting is expected, some voters may feel more comfortable casting ballots in person following recent mail delays. 717
