OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- It's a 3,100-mile bike ride that starts from the Oceanside Pier Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Buzz Ponce, 69, will be riding his bike coast to coast from Oceanside to St. Augustine, Florida.  He is doing it to raise money for the Warrior's Heart Foundation. The foundation helps active military members, veterans and first responders dealing PTSD, alcohol abuse and drug addiction. Buzz says he started planning the bike ride two years ago. At first, he says it was all about seeing if he could do it, but then realized it would be better if he could use it to help others. "It really flashed on me that I should do something other than just about me. And that’s when I came across the idea of trying to raise money for a cause," Ponce said. The organization has a treatment center in San Antonio.  Ponce says his goal is to raise ,000 to hopefully start a scholarship for people that need to travel to the center.People can donate Buzz's cause here. If all goes as scheduled, Buzz will be in St. Augustine on July 1.  1091

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Facebook says it has prepared new safeguards for the 2020 U.S. elections.The social media giant says the changes will help it better prepare to deal with candidates who prematurely declare victory or contest official results, as well as the possibility of voter intimidation by alleged — and potentially armed — “poll watchers.”It's also removing calls for people to “watch” polling places if the apparent goal to intimidate voters and election officials.The company will also halt all political advertisements once polls close on Nov. 3. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A major turning point for the town of Oceanside was the creation of Camp Pendleton."It was just a village, Oceanside was just a village and all of a sudden you have all these workers coming into Oceanside for a place to sleep, a place to eat," said Faye Jonason, History and Museum Director at Camp Pendleton since 1996.According to the Oceanside Historical Society, the town's population more than doubled in five years. Restaurants, schools, and hotels were bursting at the seams. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor spurred the U.S. Navy to purchase the 132,000 acres of Rancho Santa Margarita y las Flores Mexican land grant. The base was only supposed to be temporary, but the process of turning the quiet Rancho into the world's largest Marine Corps Base had begun. "I think they found it was such good training area, they weren't about to let go," said Jonason. Camp Pendleton was declared a permanent installation in 1944.A glimpse of Camp Pendleton Through the Years, compiled by the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce:June 1950: Outbreak of the Korean War sees peacetime activities come to an end; Reserve Marines arrive at the base and begin processing and training for subsequent deployment to Korea. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Decades after serving in World War II, a North County veteran is receiving one of the nation’s highest honors. Willie Pong enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943; he was only 17 but lied about his age. He served almost three years as a ship's cook.Pong's parents were born in China and moved to America to give their kids a better life, which they did. But as a boy, Pong faced discrimination. I'm a true American. I'm a true American all the way. Just because of my color, don't mean a thing, it's inside my heart," said Pong. On Monday, social media website Reddit banned r/The_Donald, a subreddit devoted to discussing President Donald Trump, as a part of a purge of more than 2,000 groups on the site that were in violation of the social media site's rules, according to The New York Times and The Verge.The move marks a stark change in Reddit policy. Previously, Reddit has allowed groups and individuals more leeway when censoring content on the site.Launched in 2015 along with Trump's presidential campaign, r/The_Donald grew to nearly 800,000 members before it was removed from Reddit. While the group did not have any affiliation with Trump or the Trump campaign, the then-Republican nominee participated in an "Ask Me Anything" discussion in the group during the 2016 presidential campaign.The group has become known for a breeding ground for conspiracy theories. According to reports, the group helped propel the "Pizzagate" theory that led to the arrest of an armed man at a D.C.-area pizza restaurant shortly after the 2016 election. It also routinely hosted Islamophobic discussions and promoted other content many considered to be racist.According to a disclaimer, Reddit says r/The_Donald was banned violating Rules 1 (harassment, threats of violence), 2 (spamming, vote manipulation) and 8 (don't break the site or do anything that interferes with the normal use of Reddit).Reddit had previously taken steps to curtail r/The_Donald. In June 2019, the network "quarantined" the site, meaning that the subreddit would not show up in search results and could not appear on the site's front page. In addition, anyone attempting to visit the forum would be met with a warning screen.The move comes about three weeks after Reddit published a blog post outlining changes to the social network's policies.
