About 30,000 doses of an experimental coronavirus treatment are shipping out Tuesday. It's Regeneron's antibody cocktail that got an emergency use authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over the weekend. It’s also the same treatment President Donald Trump got last month.Patients who are diagnosed early with COVID-19 may be eligible. The goal is to keep them from getting sicker, so they don't have to go to the hospital. But the treatment still needs to be given through an IV.“The challenge is there has to be a place to administer it, so a place where you can have COVID patients in an infusion setting where they can be treated and monitored. This is not straight-forward,” said Dr. Helen Boucher, Chief of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Tufts Medical Center.Any transfusion centers administering the IV will charge for those services.“The medicine itself is paid for by the government right now under the emergency use authorization. Those other charges have to be managed and they'll be managed by insurance, Medicare or Medicaid,” said Boucher. It's unclear if patients will need to request the treatment or if doctors will choose who to prescribe it to.In trying to get it to areas that need it most, the federal government will work with states on distribution. The problem is everywhere is seeing spikes right now.“We know that at least for 2020, the supply is going to be very low, so many of us in the infectious disease community and all the health care community are concerned that this resource will be allocated in an equitable way,” said Boucher. After this initial rollout, Regeneron says it expects to have 80,000 doses ready by the end of the month, 200,000 by the first week of January, and then 300,000 by the end of that month. 1796

Aldon Smith, who was the NFC's Defensive Player of the Year, has a warrant out for his arrest on Monday after a possible domestic incident from the weekend, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Smith is wanted on charges of misdemeanor domestic violence, assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism, the Chronicle reported. Earlier the in the day, the Oakland Raiders released Smith. The incident in question was reportedly Saturday evening, and the victim identified Smith as the suspect. TMZ reported that Smith checked into a rehab facility on Monday. Smith has had frequent encounters with law enforcement. The Chronicle reported that Smith has three previous DUI arrests. A website tracking early voting numbers reports more than 23,500,000 votes have been cast in the 2020 presidential election as of Friday night. The US Election Project, run by Professor Michael McDonald at the University of Florida for the last few elections, is keeping track of early voting, mail-in and absentee ballot data states make available. The details of those ballots are not shared, these are just the raw numbers of how many ballots have been cast. The site is also tracking each state’s ballots cast as compared to the entire number of votes counted in the 2016 election. For the country as a whole, the more than 23.5 million ballots cast is about 17 percent of the total number of votes in the 2016 election. Some states appear to be on track to potentially reach their 2016 voter turnout number, or get very close, before the election. In Vermont, more than 136,000 ballots have been cast, that’s more than 42 percent of the total number of ballots cast in the 2016 election. In Texas, early voting started Tuesday and already more than 2,647,000 ballots have been cast. That’s almost 30 percent of the total number of ballots cast in 2016.Professor McDonald does track about a dozen states that report party affiliation of the ballots returned. Those numbers show a higher number of Democrats have returned their ballots compared to those identified as Republican. However, there is no way to tell who those ballots voted for exactly, and history shows Democrats typically have higher numbers of mail-in ballots, according to McDonald. 1557
