SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A parole board Tuesday granted parole to an actor previously convicted of stabbing his ex-girlfriend nearly two dozen times.Shelley Malil, who had a supporting role in the movie “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” was convicted seven years ago of repeatedly stabbing Kendra Beebe in San Marcos.Beebe spoke to 10News after Malil was granted Parole. “Why are we letting out this person who’s going to go back out and go back on the internet and date and possibly relapse and hurt somebody else.” RELATED: 40-Year-Old Virgin actor deemed suitable for parole, 10 years after brutally stabbing ex-girlfriendAs of this year, Malil had served 9 years of his 12-years-to-life sentence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local family is desperately pleading to individual ICE officials to let them see their patriarch for the first time in 19 months. The Bakala family is seeking asylum after they say they barely escaped death in the Republic of Congo. Once they reached San Diego, the family of nine was separated.17-year-old Marie Louise Bakala should be focusing on college. But right now, that is on hold. "I am getting stronger, but it is not enough because I need my father back," Mari Louise said to the St. Luke's Episcopal Church congregation in North Park. The Bakala's left a comfortable life in the Republic of Congo. Father Constantin was a computer engineer for the Ministry of Health. His wife Annie Kapongo was a shop owner and mother of seven. The Bakalas say it all changed when the new government stepped in. Kapongo says because of Constantin's occupation, the family was targeted, brutalized, and even sexually abused by Congolese authorities. Fearing for their lives, they came to San Diego in 2017 to seek political asylum."This family came across a world come to a country that will protect them, but instead, it has only been a continuing nightmare," Pastor Colin Mathewson said. Annie Kapongo was released with an ankle monitor with the seven kids in San Diego. Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] authorities detained Constantin in the East Coast alone. In February, a judge rejected Constantin's asylum case and appeal. But in March, he as given an emergency stay. Just last week, he earned the right to appear in front of a judge again, this time with a lawyer. Friends and staff of St. Luke's are now pleading with ICE to grant Constantin parole, to be with his family. They say it would be a show of good faith, just as the Good Samaritan did in the Bible."There is an assistant field director, and there is a deportation officer out there in Atlanta," Pastor Mathewson said. "We are asking Christine and Michael today to help somebody that needs so much help. After 19 months of detention, to bring him back home with his family as he awaits his next court date.""I hope that he will be here with us and we will be a family again," Marie Louise said."Please, please help me," Kapongo said through a French translator. "Send me back my husband."Last year, the couple missed their 20th wedding anniversary because Constantin was detained. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new grant is helping a San Diego nonprofit expand its services during the coronavirus pandemic.Kitchens for Good recently got a ,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation and San Diego Gas & Electric.With the new money, Kitchens for Good is now cooking 7,000 meals each week, which local food banks give away to people in need.The meals are "heat and eat," said co-founder Aviva Paley. That helps people who can't cook or don't have a full kitchen get healthy meals."If you are a home-bound senior or someone who doesn't have a full kitchen or the capacity to cook for yourself, it can be really difficult to turn that bag of mixed match groceries into a healthy nutritious meal," said Paley.Before the pandemic, Kitchens for Good made 2,000 meals per week. The program provided job and skills training to people with troubled past, many of whom had been in prison or experienced homelessness.RELATED: San Diego program transforming lives in the kitchenThe grant is helping Kitchens for Good rehire some of their graduates who had lost jobs during the pandemic."Many of our apprentices have been on that other end of the food line; hungry, hopeless and homeless," said Paley. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new scam appears to target local Amazon customers worried about being victims of package theft.Neighbors at the Escala community in Mission Valley say package thefts have been an ongoing problem for the last few years.Could the trend be providing fuel for a scam? A recent encounter at the housing complex could point to a new method by scammers.Adriana Alberdi, who has lived at the complex for a decade, said she and other residents received an email from the property management company describing a recent visitor.According to the email, the man — described as blond and in his early 20s — was wearing a lanyard connected to a tablet. He had business cards and claimed to work at Amazon. At one point, the man went to the on-site office pushing to install an Amazon Key device in homes. The new service allows Amazon to gain access to a home or car to deliver packages and keep them from getting stolen.The email says the man was "pushy" and "argumentative," before finally leaving. Amazon confirmed the man was not an employee."It's like you're getting robbed of your security. You don't know who to trust anymore," said Alberdi. "This is new. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died following a shooting in downtown San Diego Thursday evening, police said.The shooting was reported just after 9:40 p.m. near the intersection of 5th Avenue and E Street in the Gaslamp Quarter, according to San Diego police.According to police, an altercation broke out between a man and his companion and a third man. Police said during the altercation, the third man produced a handgun and shot one of the men in the upper torso. The suspected shooter and the victim's companion both fled the scene.The victim was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment, but he later died from his injuries. Police identified him as a 22-year-old Hispanic male.While the victim's companion was found a short distance away, police are still searching for the gunman. The suspected shooter was described as a Black male with braided hair, between 20-40 years of age, and wearing a bandana or rag over his face. He was last seen wearing dark clothing and running on eastbound E Street.Police are interviewing witnesses and viewing surveillance video footage from area businesses as part of the investigation. 1141
