Countries in the region could make better use of the platform to achieve sound and fast growth.Yang said EAS has pushed forward cooperation on finance, disaster mitigation, trade, education and climate change in the region.Yang said China would intensify education cooperation with other EAS countries. In the coming five years, China will provide 400 more government scholarship each year to developing countries in the EAS framework.Yang also illustrated China's position on region architecture development at the meeting.Yang said the development of regional architecture is conducive to the peace, development, cooperation and prosperity of East Asia. Yang reaffirmed that ASEAN should maintain centrality in regional framework.ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were busy searching a possible survivor in a damaged building Wednesday night after they were told cries for help were heard from the building in a mudslide-hit town in northwest China.Zhang Guiquan, an army officer, told Xinhua some residents of Zhouqu County of Gansu Province heard cries from the partially-collapsed building near the Bailong River that overflowed after being blocked by mudslides.About 40 soldiers braving heavy rains and potential mudslides were detecting signs of life near the building after receiving the report from the residents, Zhang said.Hopes of finding any survivors faded as the thunderstorms battered the county seat of Zhouqu Wednesday night, nearly four days after the mudslides hit the town, leaving 1,117 people dead and 627 missing.

BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- China issued an orange alert on Thursday for wave surges, the second highest level warning, forecasting that Typhoon Conson may reach land Friday on the southeast coast of China' s Hainan province.The National Marine Environment Forecast Center warned of a 6-metre wave surge in the middle and the north of the South China Sea from Thursday night through Friday.Meanwhile, warnings were also issued for a possible 5-metre wave surge off the east shore of Hainan province and a 3-metre wave surge off the west shore of Guangdong province and the southern coast of Hainan.The Center also issued a yellow-level alert for a storm surge which might affect Guangdong and Hainan province.The center suggested local governments gear up for a disaster response.Conson is currently wreaking havoc in the Philippines, killing at least 26 people and injuring 14 others as of Thursday.

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday concluded his two-day official visit to Bangladesh and started his trip to Laos, the second leg of his four-nation tour.In Dhaka on Tuesday, Xi met separately with the country's opposition leader, parliament speaker and president.In talks with Khaleda Zia, chairperson of Bangladesh's main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Xi lauded what Zia has done to promote the Sino-Bangladeshi relationship.He said China appreciates very much Bangladesh's precious support on issues concerning China's core interests like the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.He said China supports Bangladesh's economic development and will continue to do its best to help the south Asian country.Zia said China is a close and friendly neighbor of Bangladesh. "Bangladesh always regards China as an important strategic partner," she said.Talking with Bangladeshi Parliament Speaker Abdul Hamid, Xi spoke highly of the comprehensive development of bilateral relations since both countries established diplomatic relations 35 years ago.He reiterated China's commitment to work with Bangladesh to push forward their comprehensive partnership of cooperation. NANNING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged that more efforts be implemented to fight floods, while reassuring those residents living in areas ravaged by flooding and inspecting flood damage, during his visit to Wuzhou city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which has been plagued by torrential rains.During the two-day visit ending Sunday, Wen checked on water levels and river banks in Wuzhou, and visited households in mountainous areas, urban downtowns and rural areas, pledging the government would use all means to prevent and fight flooding.Further, Wen called on local authorities to closely monitor weather changes and strengthen forecasting and warning systems to ensure an advanced emergency response.Further, more efforts were demanded to prevent damages from floods and landslides, Wen said. He highlighted the importance of relief work in schools, mines, railways and roads, as well as tourism sites.Wen required immediate reports and instant responses on risks of dam and reservoir breaks from local officials. More efforts should be taken to safeguard public safety, he added.Also, more relief funds and materials were needed to ensure food, clothing, accommodations, drinking water and health care are delivered to flood victims, Wen said.As of Sunday morning, mud flows and floods triggered by the intense rainstorms that began in mid-June had left 132 people dead and 86 missing in south China's nine provinces and regions, including Guangxi, Fujian, and Jiangxi, according to the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.More than 10 million people have been affected by severe floods, which has accounted for economic losses of 14.5 billion yuan (2.1 billion U.S. dollars), officials noted.
