ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A young woman says she chased an intruder from her Encinitas home. When she began the chase, she had no idea he was armed with a knife. Just before midnight Tuesday, Maria Medvedev was reading a book in her home in the Village Park neighborhood. She was startled by the sound of the side gate opening. Then, she saw and heard a shadowy figure race out of her yard.Medvedev took off after him and found him hiding behind a truck in the street. She says he tried to convince her he was a neighbor, then took out of a knife and approached her."He flashed it and that's when I started screaming, 'Someone call the police. Someone call 9-1-1!'" she said.  706

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) — A Fallbrook woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash late Friday.The 56-year-old Fallbrook resident was walking on East Alvarado St. near Alvarado Ct. just before 9 p.m. when she was hit by a vehicle in the eastbound lane, according to California Highway Patrol.She was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released and it's not clear why the woman was in the street.The vehicle that hit the woman fled the area heading eastbound. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The recent birth of a southern white rhino calf marks a major success milestone in the project to save the species' close genetic cousin, the northern white rhino. Only two northern whites are left in the world. Both are females incapable of reproducing.Edward, the calf born in late July, was conveived through in vitro fertilization using frozen sperm samples. "It was so exciting for everyone who worked on this project, the culmination of a very long time and a lot of work," said Dr. Barbara Durrant, a scientist who has worked on the in vitro aspect of the project.Still, Durrant says this milestone still comes during the early stage of the audacious plan. Scientists eventually hope to create northern white embryos with stem cells. Those embryos would then be transferred into female southern white rhinos, who would deliver and raise the calves. The Safari Park brought six females to its facility to act as surrogates, including Victoria, the female who gave birth to Edward.Durrant is excited to move to the next step."We're turning our efforts more toward the lab, toward figuring out how to do the in vitro fertilization and the embryo development.Durrant estimates as long as ten years until the project finally leads to a living northern white rhino calf.Edward is currently being kept in a part of the Safari Park to which the public does not have access. But zookeepers anticipate he'll be ready for public viewing by the end of August. 1489

EMERSON, Iowa — While many in Southwest Iowa saw the strongest of Friday's thunderstorm, one Emerson couple watched a funnel cloud spin from the cloud outside their home.Larry and Marlene Skalberg, who live right just east of Emerson, have lived in their house for 39 years. They've experienced storms throughout the years but never saw one up close like Friday's storm that created a funnel cloud right outside their front door. "It was just neat to watch it and how it formed and then how it started to get smaller and then it just disappeared," said Marlene. Marlene said she got an alert on her phone about a tornado warning that advised people in the area to take cover, as northeastern Mills County was under tornado warning for part of the afternoon. She started heading towards the basement, but her husband Larry grabbed a chair, a beer and headed for the front lawn."He was like, 'look! A tornado! Go out on the lawn and take pictures!' So there I am out on the lawn just taking pictures and I'm like, 'what if the tail just comes down and takes?' " said Marlene.Larry wasn't worried. He said he enjoys watching storms brew and has experienced several tornadoes in Iowa, Oklahoma and Kansas. "I like to watch storms coming in and the clouds forming. I always have since I was a little kid," said Larry. "I enjoy storms. But if the funnel cloud had touched the hill...well that's a different story." 1436

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - People who own chickens in the North County are taking extra precautions to protect their flocks, as a deadly bird disease creeps closer to San Diego County.The California Department of Food and Agriculture issued aquarantine for birds in Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties after reports of the disease. With all three counties surrounding San Diego, officials here have issued warnings to chicken owners to look out for symptoms.According to the San Diego County Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures, symptoms include:Sudden death and increased death loss in flock.Sneezing, gasping for air, nasal discharge, coughing.Greenish, watery diarrhea.Decreased activity, tremors, drooping wings, twisting of head and neck, circling, complete stiffness.Swelling around the eyes and neck.They say anyone who sees these symptoms in their birds should contact the CDFA Bird Hotline at at 866-922-BIRD. 953
