SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the weather across San Diego County warms, rattlesnakes are out if full force.Rattlesnakes live throughout Southern California and live in the deserts as well as along the coast, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The department says most bites happen from April to October when the snakes and people are most active outdoors. RELATED: Deadly backyard encounter could point to dangerous snake season“Snakes really get an unfair bad rap, when they actually play an important role in California’s ecosystems,” said CDFW’s Keep Me Wild program coordinator Lesa Johnston. The potential of running into a rattlesnake shouldn’t deter anyone from enjoying the great outdoors, the department adds. According to the California Poison Control System, the chances of being bitten are small when compared with the risk of other environmental injuries. Taking the time to learn about safety precautions before going outdoors can make all the difference,” Johnston added. The department says rattlesnakes generally aren’t aggressive and will likely retreat if given room and not provoked or threatened. “Most bites occur when a rattlesnake is handled or accidentally brushed against by someone walking or climbing,” the department says on their website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border agents arrested 15 people over Presidents’ Day weekend during a smuggling event in Mission Bay.U.S. Border Patrol agents caught the smuggling incident in action on Saturday at about 2 p.m. at a Ski Beach launch ramp. As agents got closer, they say they noticed a large group of people quickly exiting the boat and heading for three vehicles.Agents stopped the individuals from getting away and questioned all 15 people involved in the incident.Agents say six people in the group were suspected of human smuggling and arrested. Five of them are U.S. citizens, including four men ranging from 20 to 30 years old and one 25-year-old woman, according to border officials.The nine other people arrested were male Mexican nationals ranging from 27 to 41 years old who admitted to being illegally present.U.S. Border Patrol seized the boat and three vehicles at the scene. 899

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the nation continues to process what happened during the first presidential debate, many are expressing frustration about what didn’t happen.Local and national Latino American leaders are calling out the moderator and the candidates for making no mention of the millions of Latinos in the country.Just moments after the debate ended Tuesday night, organizations like the National Association of Hispanic Journalists shared a series of tweets highlighting that Latinos were not mentioned during the debate.According to the Pew Research Center, more than 32 million Latino voters are eligible to vote in November.Voters like Denisse Roldan Newell wanted to hear more from both candidates about their policies on a range of issues.“It's not just immigration, it's not just the border wall, it's having to do with economics, with smalls business development, with affordable health care, with education,” said Roldan Newell.Roberto Alcantar with the Chicano Federation told ABC 10News it was concerning that the candidates made no mention about COVID-19 and it’s disproportionate affect on the Latino community.In San Diego, Latinos make up 34% of the population but 65% of COVID-19 cases."These are not just Latino issues, these are issues for all of us as American. While, yes, we are Latinos, we are American and our issues are America’s issues," said Alcantar. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine rolls out to healthcare workers, at least four have had severe allergic reactions after getting the shot.The cases include two healthcare workers in Alaska and two in the UK. In the UK cases, both individuals carried epipens.“So these were people with a history of severe allergies and not just severe allergies like you got hives, but they had allergies where they encounter certain things in the environment and their body shuts down,” said UC San Francisco infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Chin-Hong.All four have apparently recovered.At this point, doctors aren’t sure what caused the reactions. Generally speaking, allergies when your immune system overreacts to something harmless.Pfizer’s vaccine has 10 ingredients that fit into four categories.The active ingredient is mRNA. These are temporary genetic instructions for your cells to build a small, harmless fragment of the virus’ shell to train your immune system, similar to setting up a punching bag to train a boxer.Then there are fats to stabilize and transport the mRNA, salts to maintain the pH, and sugar to prevent the solution from degrading while freezing.All the ingredients are considered standard. Dr. Chin-Hong says he was struck by what’s not in the vaccine.“They didn't have egg products or any of those kinds of things that people might be allergic to,” he said. “They didn't have live virus, which might also elicit a response.”The only ingredient with a history of allergic reactions is polyethylene glycol, or PEG, one of the fats that acts as an oily bubble for the mRNA.PEG is also in Moderna’s vaccine and it’s common; it’s found in ultrasound gel, laxatives, injectable steroids and other products.Although PEG allergies are rare, the FDA says people who are allergic to any of the 10 ingredients should not get the vaccine.However, experts say people with common allergies should not worry.“A lot of people have minor food allergies or bee-sting allergies or peanut allergies or environmental allergies,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego. “They may even carry an epi-pen because sometimes it gets severe. Those people would not be excluded from getting this vaccine.”The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology issued guidance saying people with those common allergies, including to latex and medications, “are no more likely than the general public to have an allergic reaction” to the vaccine.After every shot, people who get vaccinated have to wait 15 minutes so healthcare workers can monitor them for a reaction. Should one occur, interventions like epi-pens are very effective.The FDA said people with a history of allergic reactions to vaccines or injectable drugs can still get the shot, but they should wait 30 minutes for slightly longer monitoring.The odds of having a severe allergic reaction to any vaccine is about 1 in 760,000. That means you’re more likely to be struck by lightning in a given year, which the CDC estimates is about 1 in 500,000. 3048
