JI'NAN, March 31(Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator has called for greater efforts to promote women's awareness and ability to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.Chen Zhili, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, made the remarks during a week-long inspection tour of the eastern Shandong Province ending Wednesday.Chen was sent by the top legislature to inspect how local law enforcement agencies implemented the Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women.The law, which took effect on Dec. 1, 2005, had played an important role in protecting women's legitimate rights, raising their social status and mobilized them in the country's modernization drive in an active and innovative manner, she said.She called for more efforts to publicize the law to make people aware of the law's significance in protecting women's rights.Chen, also chairwoman of the All-China Women's Federation, said Chinese women faced challenges such as discrimination and a lack of labor rights.

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- China's top food safety authority issued new regulations Thursday, setting more stringent requirements on the use and the approval of food additives.The Ministry of Health's "Regulations of New Food Additives," published on its website, set six new restrictions on the use of food additives.The new regulations forbid the use of food additives to mislead consumers about the content and quality of food or to fake food content.Using food additives to disguise decaying and bad quality food is also forbidden.Under the new regulations, food producers are required to use the minimum amount of necessary food additives, and are not allowed to use those that would reduce the nutritional value of food.The ministry would approve new food additives, only if they are proved to be necessary in food production and safe for humans in tests organized by the ministry, the new regulations stipulate.The ministry must conduct reassessments of the safety of its approved food additives, when their necessity and safety are questioned by new research results.The new regulations takes effective Thursday.Food quality in China has been a major concern after a series of scandals.In 2004, at least 13 babies died from malnutrition in the east China's Anhui Province and another 171 were hospitalized, after consuming infant milk powder that contained too little protein.In November 2006, the country's food safety authorities found seven companies producing salted red-yolk eggs with cancer-causing red Sudan dyes to make their eggs look redder and fresher.And in 2008, six babies died and 300,000 others fell ill after being fed with baby formula made from milk contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine.

BEIJING, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Local authorities in southwest China are moving to clamp down on food price hikes as the worst drought in decades shows no sign of easing.Authorities in Guiyang, capital of the poverty-stricken mountainous Guizhou province, have indicated they would step up price monitoring and crack down on price gouging.Vegetable vendors will be fined up to 100,000 yuan (14,650 U.S. dollars) if they are found involved in jacking up vegetable prices. The maximum fine for businesses is 1 million yuan.In Kunming, capital of the hardest-hit Yunnan province, the local government is monitoring food prices and supply on a daily basis. Local price control and industry and commerce authorities have launched campaigns to crack down on food hoarding and price gouging.Local governments in their neighboring regions have taken similar measures to prevent huge rises in prices of grain, edible oil, and vegetables.The dry weather has been ravaging southwest China for months, affecting 61.3 million residents and 5 million hectares of crops in Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guangxi.The worsening drought has damaged wide swathes of vegetables and sparked sharp price hikes. Many vegetable prices have more than doubled.Hou Junfa, a purchasing manager in a hotel in Nanning, capital of Guangxi, said vegetable prices continued to surge even after the Chinese Lunar New Year when prices usually fall.Wang Wenying, a wholesaler in Nanning, said that prices of onion and potato continued to rise because of output declines in Yunnan, a main vegetable producing region.The price hikes have resulted in increases in household expending.A local resident in Nanning, surnamed Yang, said he spent five yuan more on vegetables than a month ago.Some residents choose to buy cheaper vegetables to cut household expending.Amid other efforts to curb huge price rises, the local governments have also started importing vegetables from non-drought-stricken regions to increase supply.Authorities in Kunming earlier in the week bought 250 tonnes of wax gourd, pumpkin, and eggplant from other regions to ease supply shortage in local markets.Prices of grain, including the staple food rice, has recorded relatively moderate gains of about 10 percent.Some sellers, taking advantage of the lingering drought, have started increasing their rice prices in some cities.The drought has caused speculation of further inflation rises as it has damaged hundreds of millions hectares of crops and disrupted spring planting as well.But prices are expected to stabilize as grain is being sent to the drought-stricken regions. BOAO, Hainan, April 10 (Xinhua) -- World politicians and entrepreneurs attending the annual Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Saturday called to prevent trade protectionism from posing a real threat to the fragile global economic recovery.The worst financial crisis since 1930s plunged the world economy into downturn last year, the first time since the Second World War. But many economies are recovering at unexpectedly quicker rates as massive fiscal stimulus has paid off.The world economy was in a recovery, but the global demand was still worryingly weak, Yi Xiaozhun, China's deputy commerce minister, said at the BFA meeting in Boao in south China's island province of Hainan.Many signs also showed a rise of trade protectionism as more and more countries took protectionist measures, Yi said.Former Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan said the once strong support for international cooperation appeared to be eroding as the financial crisis subsides, which is "even more worrying."Some nations were verbally against protectionism, but they in fact imposed anti-dumping or anti-subsidy measures and made a fuss about exchange rate problems, Zeng wrote in the BFA official publication.Up to 250 anti-dumping complaints were raised last year, 20 percent more than a year earlier, and 41 anti-subsidies complaints, up 193 percent year-on-year, according to the World Trade Organization (WTO).China has become the biggest victim of trade protectionism, according to the U.K.-based Center for Economic Policy Research. He added that the Doha round, if completed, would help create a large number of jobs and guarantee global economic recovery.Goh Chok Tong, Senior Minister and former Prime Minister of Singapore,also called to guard against trade protectionism under the green and environmental protection labels.The developed countries should help developing countries to upgrade technology rather than abusing protectionism, Goh said."We should work together to resist all kinds of trade protectionism, otherwise there will be no economic recovery and growth," Yi said.The three-day conference, under the theme of "Green Recovery: Asia's Realistic Choice for Sustainable Growth," will conclude on Sunday.The forum is committed to promoting regional economic integration and bringing Asian countries even closer to their development goals.
