EL CAJON (KGTV): Christmas season is always busy at Family Christmas Tree Farms in El Cajon. But this year, they've been busy for months, trying to save their crop.Excessive heat and drought in the summer, combined with an unusually warm fall, had a significant impact on their Monterrey Pines.During July and August, when temperatures reached 100 degrees, the farm doubled the amount of water it gave the trees.Meanwhile, warm weather in the fall kept the trees growing longer than usual. That's because areas of Washington and Oregon also had unusually warm years.Fortunately, he says, the trees handled the heat well, and they didn't lose any of the crops. Echoing sentiments shared before Thanksgiving, the CDC is pleading with Americans to stay home this holiday season to slow the spread of the coronavirus."The best thing for Americans to do in the upcoming holiday season is to stay at home and not travel,'' said Dr. Henry Walke, CDC's COVID-19 incident manager, during a news briefing Wednesday."Cases are rising. Hospitalizations are increasing, Deaths are increasing. We need to try to bend the curve, stop this exponential increase,'' Walke continued.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had similar advice ahead of Thanksgiving, and still the TSA reported some of the highest rates of passengers since the pandemic started in the few days ahead of the holiday. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving, the TSA screened 1.17 million travelers, a record high since the pandemic started.For those who decide to travel, the CDC now recommends people get tested for COVID-19 both before and after their trips. Their guidance is to test one to three days before travel and again three to five days after travel. They also strongly recommend reducing nonessential activities and quarantining for several days around travel.Health experts, including the White House coronavirus task force is urging those who don’t get tested to act like they could be infectious and quarantine after travel to reduce the potential spread.Walke said the CDC expects to see an increase in the already high level of coronavirus cases in the next few days from Thanksgiving travel.There have been more than 13.7 million positive cases of coronavirus in this country since the pandemic started, more than 180,000 new cases were recorded December 2. EL PASO, Texas - A cathedral in El Paso was vandalized while the church was open and available for prayer Tuesday morning.The Diocese of El Paso says a suspect came into the sanctuary at St. Patrick Cathedral around 10 a.m. and destroyed an almost 90-year-old statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was located in the center behind the main altar.“I am in shock and we at the Cathedral are heartbroken over such an unexpected situation,” said The Rector of St. Patrick Cathedral, Fr. Trini Fuentes.The suspect has been detained by the El Paso Police Department, officials said.“This statue is one of my favorite representations of Jesus—his arms open wide in welcome, his heart aflame with love for us. I would often take inspiration from this image as I prepared for Mass,” said Bishop Seitz. “As sad as I am to see a statue attacked and destroyed, I am grateful that it was not a living person. But a statue, particularly this statue, concretizes and connects us to persons and ideals that are not visible to our eyes. EL CAJON (CNS) - A man and woman were sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2017 shooting death of a man in a botched holdup in the parking lot of a Burlington Coat Factory store in La Mesa, in which they made off with cash and three pairs of shoes taken from the victim. Derrick Eli Henderson, 32, and Kathryn Luwana Williams, 26, were convicted in July of murder and robbery charges for the death of 30-year-old Travis Lewis, who was gunned down on July 20, 2017, outside the Burlington Coat Factory store at 7938 El Cajon Blvd. Jurors deliberated for about two days before convicting Henderson and Williams of the killing, and finding true a special circumstance allegation of committing the killing in the commission of a robbery. The defendants met up with Lewis under the guise of purchasing marijuana from him -- a scheme orchestrated by Williams, who called the victim to arrange the meeting and brought Henderson along as muscle, according to Deputy District Attorney Kristian Trocha. Williams then took shoes the victim had just bought out of the trunk of his car and rifled through Lewis' pockets and took cash as he lay bleeding in the parking lot, but left behind marijuana that he had in his vehicle, Trocha said. In his closing argument, Trocha told the jury that Williams was ``just as responsible as if she pulled the trigger herself.'' Co-defendant Tiesha Miller-Johnson, 34, pleaded guilty to robbery and is slated to be sentenced later this month. Prosecutors said she was the getaway driver. Henderson's attorney, Yahaira Aristy, denied that he was the shooter, while the prosecution claimed that Henderson's DNA was found on the gun and that he told someone else that he ``domed that dude'' when talking about the robbery. Aristy also disputed testimony from Williams that after the shooting, Henderson threatened to kill her if she didn't take Lewis' belongings or if she told anyone about what happened.
