A United Airlines flight made an unscheduled stop at Washington Dulles International Airport on Friday after an odor in the cabin left passengers feeling ill.Flight 1675 from Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI) was en route to San Francisco International Airport (SFO), when it landed at Dulles at about 7:45 a.m.The plane landed without incident, according to a statement from Dulles International Airport. The Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene and transported seven passengers to local hospitals for evaluation, the statement said.Raman Santra, one of the passengers on the flight, said that there was a "faint fuel smell" in the cabin before departure. The odor became "quite strong while in the air" and several passengers complained of nausea, chest pain and trouble breathing, Santra said.United Airlines canceled the flight and informed passengers that the aircraft, a Boeing 737, required "prolonged ventilation system maintenance," Santra said.Santra's wife, Jo Palmer, was one of the seven hospitalized because she had more acute symptoms. Yoga is the calming down of the turnings of the mind."According to licensed professional counselor Calyn Crow, yoga is an excellent practice for mental health. She says the deep breathing alone can offer someone a sense of peace and help them to remain in the present moment."It focuses on your breathing, it helps you get back into your body, it helps you set an intention, and I'm a big believer that what you focus on gets bigger," Counselor Calyn Crow said.That's why Crow says it's essential to focus on the positive instead of the doom and gloom. Nonetheless, it's clear this virus and the disease it causes are at the forefront of everyone's minds."I've been talking about it with just about everybody in every single session," Crow said.Mental health wellness can be challenging when we're stuck at home, potentially without a job, and facing so many unknowns about the future. However, Crow says there are steps we can take to keep our minds at ease. It comes down to our basic needs."Eating foods that are good for your brain and your body, getting enough sleep, getting enough rest is important."Crow says it's also essential to know when you need to take a break and maybe go for a walk. Time outside in the sunshine can make a big difference when you're feeling down. It may also help to know you're not alone in your feelings, and it's ok to be feeling sad or anxious."We all experience these types of thought processes and thinking when we're under stress. It's just natural for our bodies to go into that flight or fight mode," Crow said.Crow says it's a matter of whether you're able to re-calibrate your thoughts and go back to a natural state of mental well-being. For some people, that's not so easy. So now is a critical time to offer friends and family members extra patience, forgiveness, and grace. Even if we feel out of control right now, those are qualities we can control."You are in control of how you respond to the people in your world. You are in control of what you're thinking, the stuff that comes out of your mouth, how you impact other people."In the end, you know your body best and what it needs. For Leathers, yoga is a practice that feeds her mental well-being, and she'll continue offering online classes until we can all meet in person again. "We don't know if this is something that's going to be happening for two weeks, eight weeks or a few months," Leathers said. "So what we have to do is take this long-term view and start implementing tactics that will maintain this strong level of mental health for us right now. A World Health Organization funded study published this week in the Lancet found that masks, physical distancing and eye protection offer substantial reduction in the spread of COVID-19. The study cautioned that even when used effectively and in combination, none of the interventions will completely prevent the spread of the virus. But the study’s authors offer some optimism the virus can be significantly slowed sans a vaccine. Keeping a distance of 1 meter in both healthcare and community settings reduced the risk of infection by 82 percent, according the research authored by a group of six infectious disease experts. Every additional meter of separation more than doubled the relative protection. “This evidence is important to support community physical distancing guidelines and shows risk reduction is feasible by physical distancing,” the study said. “Moreover, this finding can inform lifting of societal restrictions and safer ways of gathering in the community.”The study found that infectious droplets can travel up to 8 feet, and can stay in the air for hours. The use of masks and respirators with those infected with the virus reduced the risk of spreading the infection by 85%. The authors analyzed data that showed that N95 respirators in healthcare settings were up to 96% effective. Other masks were found to be 77% effective.Dr. Derek Chu from McMaster University, and co-author of the study, found that the most effective homemade masks should be ones that are water-resistant, have multiple layers, and are a good facial fit. The study also suggests that wearing eye protection resulted in a 78% reduction in infection; infection via the ocular route might occur by aerosol transmission or self-inoculation the study said.
