COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Scientists say an enormous chunk of Greenland’s ice cap, estimated to be about 110 square kilometers (42.3 square miles), has broken off in the far northeastern Arctic. For comparison, Manhattan is roughly 22 square miles. They see it as evidence of rapid climate change, which is leading to the disintegration of the Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf. The section broke off a 50-mile long fjord at the front end of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream, where it flows off the land and into the ocean. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Coronado residents heard a plan from the Port of San Diego Monday night that would allow for 350 new hotel rooms to be built on the island.Those who showed up were not happy.“Most of the residents don’t want this development to happen,” said resident Kelly Sarber. “The city can’t really handle what we're dealing with right now,” she added, referring to the island’s notorious traffic.The new proposal is part of an update to the Port’s master plan, which includes 2,403 acres of land across 34 miles of waterfront around San Diego Bay.In Coronado, the new master plan would allow for 350 hotel rooms to be built in the north Coronado subdistrict, which includes the Ferry Landing and the area occupied by the existing Marriot Hotel.“What this plan sets out is potential growth for next 30 years,” said Lesley Nishihira, planning director for the Port.She said currently they have not received a plan from a developer to actually build a hotel on the Ferry Landing property. However, if approved, the updated master plan would allow for one to be built eventually. Though, any project proposal would also have to go through a public review period.The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31. Congratulations 747, the “fat and fabulous” winner of Bear Week 2020 at Katmai National Park.Number 747 was up against bear number 32, nicknamed “Chunk,” in the final head-to-head match-up of the just-for-fun tournament.Bear 747 was first identified and tagged by the park in 2004 and, according to Katmai officials, he has grown to be one of the largest bears in the preserve.“When asked what he intends to do now that he has won, the only response was a look before going back to fishing in the Jacuzzi near the Brooks Falls, one of his favorite fishing spots,” park officials said in a press release about the winner.The annual match-up features images of brown bears from around Katmai National Park showing how they have bulked up over the spring and fall ahead of winter hibernation. The public is invited to vote for their favorite each day for a week in a brackets-style tournament.A brown bear eats a year’s worth of food in just six months to help them survive through the winter.The tournament is a way to celebrate the success of healthy bears doing what bears do, according to the organizers.“This week celebrates their success and wishes them a good hibernation!” 1185

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati Reds and Fox Sports Ohio broadcaster Thom Brennaman tells WCPO he has resigned from his position more than one month after he was suspended for using a homophobic slur on air.“My family and I have decided that I am going to step away from my role as the television voice of the Cincinnati Reds,” Brennaman wrote to WCPO. “I would like to thank the Reds, Reds fans, and the LGBTQ community for the incredible support and grace they have shown my family and me.“Brennaman has been suspended from the Cincinnati Reds since the Aug. 19 incident. He had been with the Reds since 2006.“I have been in this profession that I love for 33 years,” he wrote. “It is my hope and intention to return. And if I'm given that opportunity, I will be a better broadcaster and a much better person.“WCPO reached out to the Cincinnati Reds and Fox Sports Ohio for comment."The Reds respect Thom Brennaman’s decision to step away from the broadcast booth and applaud his heartfelt efforts of reconciliation with the LGBTQ+ community," team CEO Bob Castellini wrote in a statement. COCKEYSVILLE, Md — A unique program that partners retired thoroughbred racehorses with veterans to help combat PTSD is now adapting to help Maryland National Guardsmen who are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic."It's been rewarding every day. Just to see the smiles on the faces," employee Steve Mooney said.Mooney first got involved with Saratoga WarHorse 5 years ago, participating after he got back from a deployment in Afghanistan and suffered from PTSD and insomnia."It has help me cope with things a little different. Help me look at stress a little different," Mooney said.After going through the program in another state, Mooney helped start a branch at the Baltimore County Center for Agriculture in 2018."How many marriages did we save? How many people came off substance abuse?" Mooney said.He said the program changes lives with the connection veterans work to earn from horses."They're running around the pen trying to avoid you, and then as you interact with the horse, it comes to a point that the horse is gonna say, 'alright, I wanna be your friend now,'" Mooney said."You can see that moment when that horse and that vet decide to become friends, and there's a kind of like a handshake, and that's probably the coolest part of this whole program for me," volunteer Marc Junkerman said.An Army vet, Junkerman also decided to volunteer with the program after participating himself and feeling the change."I had to be mindful that whatever I was bringing into that ring had to positive. I had to put all the negativity down because otherwise, you're not going to get that connection with the horse. So, what's really cool is if you put that negativity down and then go in there and connect, you usually bring something better out," Junkerman said. "The flip side is, why would you then pick up something you put down? We will clean it up with the other stuff at the end of the day."Now, the program is adapting to help the thousands of Maryland National Guardsmen who dropped what they were doing to help the state through this pandemic."This is a completely different thing that none of us have dealt with in the past," Tech Sgt.
