SAN YSIDRO (KGTV) -- Local businesses are feeling a one-two punch after the border closure for non-essential travel was extended during the coronavirus pandemic.The owner of El Rincon Restaurant in San Ysidro said the extension is devastating for business."I just found out a couple hours ago that they were going to do this, I had absolutely no clue," Owner Edgar Alaniz said. He was looking forward to the reopening of the border planned for June 22, now pushed back for a third time to July 21.Alaniz said he didn't want to be mad because all of this is to protect our health and safety but it's extremely difficult for businesses to survive after being closed for three months. Alaniz said about 75-80% of their customers come from Mexico. Currently, the business is only seeing about 20% of those customers. "That's what happens when the border is closed for three months, people find different ways and for a restaurant like me, they find a different restaurant," he said.He hopes when the border reopens to welcome them back.Alaniz said they closed the restaurant March 15, and continued with take-out service. Just last week they reopened for dine-in service with protective procedures, like masks and extra cleaning, in place.Alaniz hopes to see more of his neighbors reopening as well, saying he only knows of one other locally owned restaurant in San Ysidro reopening so far.He is confident we will all get through this, "we move forward with strength and a bright vision, that's what it is and that's what it will always be about."The news comes as the U.S., Canada, and Mexico agreed to extend their agreement to keep their borders closed to non-essential travel through July 21 during the coronavirus pandemic."This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday. 1870

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Emergency crews have recovered a body after an incident at a Scottsdale aquatic park.Crews were at Eldorado Aquatic Park near Hayden and McDowell road early Monday morning.Scottsdale police say around 12:30 a.m.; an officer was making rounds in the area when he heard what sounded like muffled calls for help.He worked to locate where the calls may be coming from and eventually found them to be coming from a pipe that helps support one of the water slides.Officers were communicating with the victim, said to be a transient, but lost communication with him around 2 a.m.Officials say the man reportedly went up over a tall fence surrounding the park and was up on the slide. He then somehow fell into the pipe structure, where he became trapped.Crews had to dismantle the slide in order to get the victim's body out.He has since been identified as 31-year-old Ryan Kelly. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A report of another car found burning in a driveway is raising questions about a possible fire starter targeting vehicles in Santee.On Shaggybark Drive, Michelle Genshaw and her husband were pulling out of their home two weeks ago -- just before 4:30 in the morning -- when they saw flames in their neighbor's driveway.  A 2007 Acura TL was on fire."It looked odd because there were flames coming out of the front and back of the car, like two separates fires," said Genshaw.Genshaw's husband banged on the door, waking the Arnold family.  Together, they put the fire out with a hose a few minutes later.  Catherine Arnold is thankful the fire didn't spread, but she tells us the car is a total loss."It's really upsetting.  It was my father's car and he passed away and it was the last thing belonging to my dad that I had," said Arnold.Sheriff's investigators were called out and concluded it was arson."We talked to police and they said they smelled gas," said Genshaw.A week and a half later, car alarms sounded along with a Mother's Day inferno on Pearlwood Road.  Neighbors discovered a newly purchased Ford Mustang convertible torched in a driveway.  Mason jars with a flammable liquid were found near the gas tank. (KGTV) - Surveillance video obtained by ABC 10News shows a gas thief in action in Santee.Just before 3 a.m. last Wednesday, at a business park off North Woodside Avenue, the video revealed a masked man up to no good."Just sad seeing someone doing that," said Kevin Wilson.The owner of the vans shown in the video is Kevin Wilson, co-owner of carpet cleaning and repair company, Southwestern Carpet Works. Hours later, he arrived and smelled the aftermath."Pulled up to work and I could immediately smell gas," said Wilson.When he looked at the gas gauge of his box van, his heart sank."Instantly could tell there was less than a quarter tank, and there was a full tank the day before," said Wilson.Here's why. In the video, a man is seen carrying a water jug and some tubing. The man shoves the tube into the gas tank, before puts the tube to his mouth and siphoning the gas.He would get away with about 20 gallons of fuel."Angry and disappointed. He is stealing from a small, family business. If you steal from us, you’re stealing from our kids and our employees' kids," said Wilson.Like most small businesses, his was impacted by COVID-19"For the first month-and-a-half to two months, it was really slow," said Wilson.Fast forward to the end of summer. Wilson believes the gas thief in the video is the same one that hit his business two others times in the past few months."In times past, a little more cautious. He had his back to camera, but dressed in similar clothes and shoes," said Wilson.Wilson says other businesses in the area have also been targeted in the same time period. SAN YSIDRO, Calif., (KGTV) -- San Diego community leaders responded to comments made by the President, where he threatened to close down the US-Mexico border indefinitely if Mexico does not handle the wave of asylum seekers coming into the United States. Paola Avila with the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce is part of a nearly 100 person joint-delegation from San Diego and Baja California, going to Mexico City this Sunday, to champion US-Mexico relations. "Closing the border is not an option. Neither a portion nor all of it," Avila said. San Ysidro Port of Entry is the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere. More than 70,000 vehicles and 25,000 pedestrians cross into the United States every day.President Trump recently tried to direct .5 Billion from the Pentagon to build his campaign promise wall. But that was blocked by Senate Democrats and 12 Republicans. Now Baja-Cali business leaders fear the President will force a port and border shutdown. "Closing the border will be a profit-making operation," the President said. Not so, said Jason Wells with the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce. As the Executive Director, he advocates for 650 businesses that have a zipcode one and a half miles from the border. He will be joining Avila on Sunday, in the advocacy delegation. He knows first hand the severe consequences of a shutdown. "Our daily lives are affected by the border crossings and how long that takes. So we certainly wish that not to be something to be toyed with," Wells said. When migrants rushed the border last November, San Ysidro Port of Entry was shut down for just five hours. In that short time, the city lost .3 million in revenue. This does not include the economic impacts to neighboring Chula Vista, National City, or San Diego.ABC News consultant John Cohen, who held a senior role at Homeland Security, said the last time there was a border shutdown was during the Reagan administration. He said it caused severe economic harm to both countries. "History tells us when you shut down the southern border, it does little to stop to flow of illegal drugs into the US. It does little to stop illegal immigration. You do cause significant economic harm to the US," Cohen told ABC News.Especially in this global economy, Avila said, where pesos and dollars are swiftly exchanged, and where commerce and culture are deeply intertwined. "Our economies, communities, workforce, our businesses are so integrated. It's like dissecting a person. Dividing a person in half is not viable," Avila said.
