You know spring has sprung when hundreds of people daily turn to Twitter to vent about their itchy eyes, dripping nose and uncontrollable sneezing and coughing.Seasonal allergies, which affect about 36 million Americans, aren't just an annoyance; many doctors agree that there is a real connection between allergies and mood."'Cranky' is really the best word for it," said Katie Ingram, 30, of Alexandria, Virginia, a triathlete who has seasonal allergies. "I take a lot of medication for it, and that makes me sleepy. And I can't do a lot of the things that I like to do outside, so that makes me cranky. ... The wheezing part of it makes me feel tired."In some people, such annoyances are more serious. Research has shown that there is about a 50% increase in the risk for depression in a person suffering allergies, and if you've been seen by an allergist, that about triples the likelihood of having depression, said Dr. Paul Marshall, neuropsychologist at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Those are correlations found in scientific studies, but they don't show that allergies cause clinical depression. In practice, allergy-connected mood changes usually boil down to mild depressive symptoms, like feeling sad, lethargic and fatigued, Marshall said. Some people say they're more likely to cry during the allergy season. Allergies could make symptoms even worse in a person with clinical depression, experts say."It's important for people to understand that experiencing allergies can affect their mood," Marshall said. That's not to say that all people with allergies have depression or that all people with depression have allergies. But experiencing allergic reactions does seem to be a risk factor for developing depression -- not necessarily the emotional side of the condition but more physiological symptoms such as low energy. But is all of this in spite of the use of antihistamines or because of it? And is it the actual allergic reaction that causes these symptoms or just the sleep disturbances and general discomfort?  2060

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — Rock climber Emily Harrington has become the first woman, and fourth person, to free-climb the Golden Gate route on Yosemite National Park’s granite wall in a single day.The 34-year-old began to scale 3,000-foot El Capitan early Wednesday. The San Francisco Chronicle says Harrington reached the top in 21 hours, 13 minutes and 51 seconds, despite banging her head on the granite wall at one point.Free climbers don't use ropes to ascend, only to catch them if they fall.Harrington posted about her accomplishment on Instagram over the weekend.“I never believed I could actually free climb El Cap in a day when I first set the goal for myself,” she wrote in a caption. “It didn’t seem like a realistic objective for me. I didn’t have the skills, fitness, or risk profile to move so quickly over such a large piece of stone. But I chose it exactly for that reason. Impossible dreams challenge us to rise above who we are now to see if we can become better versions of ourselves.”As for her head injury, Harrington says she suffered a “nasty slip” that almost took her resolve. It left a deep gash on her forehead, but she soldiered through it and reached the end by about 10:30 p.m. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ????? ?????????? from a western Indiana farmer paints a stark image of the problems Hoosier farmers are facing this spring. One image shared by Katie Staton shows a man standing in the middle of a corn field in Putnam County, Indiana on June 17, 2018, with corn above his head. The other image was taken exactly a year later in the same cornfield and shows the same man with barely any growth around him."These two pictures speak volumes to the crisis American Farmers are facing this spring," Staton wrote on her Facebook page.Farmers across the state have been struggling to plant their crops this spring because of the excessive amount of rain. Many fields still remain unplantable across the state.According to the National Weather Service, Indianapolis has seen higher than average rainfall totals in every month this year except for May, which was slightly below average. The average totals refers to the normal rainfall between 1981-2010.It's not just farmers in Indiana that are concerned about wet conditions. The Chicago Tribune reports that 1036

With the election finally over, Congress is about to get back to work. And for many Americans, the first thing they want to know is whether we will now get a second round of ,200 stimulus checks.Negotiations in Congress stalled as the election approached. In the weeks before Election Day:House Democrats last pushed a .2 trillion package with another round of ,200 per-person checks.White House negotiators offered a slightly smaller .9 trillion stimulus, also with checks. But Senate Republicans countered with a 0 billion "skinny bill" that may not include any checks. We will know more in the coming days.Bonanza for YouTubersBut from the "Doesn't That Stink?" file: the hundreds of YouTube videos that make it seem another stimulus check is on the way imminently. Why so many videos? Simple: Because these videos earn money for the YouTubers who make them.We found multiple videos by the same people, some with hundreds of thousands of views, rehashing the same information over and over.In some cases, it's just a guy in a T-shirt sitting in a tiny apartment. But if "stimulus check" is in the headline, it is guaranteed to get views. The king of YouTube stimulus checks videos is a guy known as "It's Jimmy," who posts stimulus videos, with splashy thumbnail photos, every few days."What's up, guys. This is Jimmy with your second stimulus check update," he said in a recent one. 1399

With various areas of the US under an air quality alert due to recent wildfires, dog owners now have a way to protect to their pets from wildfire smoke. The K-9 Mask, which officially launched in 2019, uses four layers of air filtration to block smoke particles from entering dogs’ lungs. It is shaped like a muzzle to fit over the dog’s mouth and nose. The masks come in four sizes and retail for .99 on its website. In Fall 2018, Evan Daugherty and Kirby Holmes began testing prototypes for the mask amid wildfires in California. After a successful test, Daugherty and Holmes used a crowdfunding campaign to fully fund the project. After 175 donors gave the duo more than ,000, they were able to produce and distribute the K-9 mask starting in 2019.Both the EPA and American Veterinary Medical Association say that smoke from wildfires can be harmful for pets.“Animals with cardiovascular or respiratory disease are especially at risk from smoke and should be closely watched during all periods of poor air quality,” the American Veterinary Medical Association says. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends pet owners look for the following symptoms amid wildfires and times of poor air quality:Coughing or gaggingDifficulty breathing, including open mouth breathing and increased noise when breathingEye irritation and excessive wateringInflammation of throat or mouthNasal dischargeAsthma-like symptomsIncreased breathing rateFatigue or weaknessDisorientation or stumblingReduced appetite and/or thirst 1530
