SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday in favor of providing employers the option to opt out of providing free birth control to their staff, based on religious beliefs. The 7-2 vote was polarizing."It's a huge win for religion," Pastor Andy Ballon said."We are extremely disappointed," Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California’s President/CEO, Jodi Hicks said.Pastor Ballon said the vote is a victory because it allows people of faith the freedom to not do something they don't believe in. "We believe that life starts at conception, so we believe we should have the right to chose to not provide or not pay for these contraceptives."Ballon said women have options to access birth control outside their healthcare plan provided through work. One of those options is Planned Parenthood."We know what [the vote] means. It will have a devastating effect on women trying to plan how they want to live their lives quite frankly," Hicks said. She explained those plans could involve pursuing higher education or a career.Hicks said 5.5 million women in California could have to pay if their employers opt out. Hicks said that leaves minorities much more vulnerable, saying many can't afford birth control."We are planning on campaigning to encourage those companies still cover access to birth control for women," she said.Pastor Ballon said it's not a fight against women. "Women play an important role in my life and it's not about taking anybody's rights. It's about protecting the life in the belly of the woman."He said he has great respect for women.Hicks responded, "your religious choices can't impede on someone else's decisions to be healthy."The ruling rolls back 'Obamacare', but could be reversed in a future administration. 1753

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This week, thousands of letters, pictures, and cards from local groups were sent to veterans who were not able to visit memorials in their honor this year due to the pandemic.Honor Flight San Diego usually takes veterans to visit memorials in Washington D.C. built in their honor. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, that flight won't take to the sky again until May 2021.Organizers had collected 3,000 letters and cards from local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church organizations, and the national organization, Solider Angels, for previously scheduled flights. In San Diego, 120 San Diego County WWII and Korean War veterans were sent care packages on Friday. Two of those packages were hand-delivered to local veterans by Honor Flight San Diego Founder Dave Smith and Chairman Julie Brightwell.Honor Flight is a trip at no cost to veterans and has taken more than 1,400 WWII and Korean War veterans in San Diego across the country to visit war memorials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Threats from President Donald Trump to move forward with ICE raids aren't stopping a Barrio Logan organization from patrolling the streets and alerting the community when agents are in their neighborhoods. Union Del Barrio is a 38-year-old organization. In the last year, they started the community patrols to warn neighbors of their rights, if ICE shows up at their door. Benjamin Prado is a member of Union Del Barrio. He says volunteers patrol in Logan Heights, Barrio Logan, Shelltown, City Heights and Linda Vista. Prado says they never interfere with the ICE agents doing their job, only document what they see. The organization is also training volunteers in other cities, including Los Angeles. Prado says they feel ICE shouldn't exist at all and that these patrols are to challenge the administration, trying to stop them from terrorizing and separating their families with deportations. On Saturday, Trump said the administration would move forward with ICE raids "fairly soon". Late Sunday afternoon, the president also tweeted in response to a New York Times article saying in part "people should not be entering the country illegally" while also praising the work of Border Patrol and others in law enforcement. Trump also insisted the wall is being built. So far, no word from the administration as to when the deportations will start. 1378
