SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums and townhomes both fell by roughly 25 percent in September compared to August, according to data released Tuesday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Single-family home sales decreased from 2,039 in August to 1,536 in September, a 24.7 percent decline. Condo and townhome sales fell from 1,056 to 792, a 25 percent decrease.Year-over-year sales figures were also down, with single-family home sales falling 21.6 percent from 1,958 in September 2017 to 1,536 last month, and attached property sales down 22.7 percent from 1,024 to 792 listings sold.In total, previously-owned home sales in 2018 are down 9 percent compared to the first nine months of 2017."I'm hopeful that residential sales will continue along a mostly positive line for the rest of the year," said GSDAR President Steve Fraioli. "But it's possible that rising prices and interest rates may factor into many home purchase decisions."Monthly median prices for single-family homes fell slightly, from 5,000 to 0,000 between August and September, while attached property prices rose 1.8 percent from 5,000 to 2,500.Year-over-year prices for both single-family homes and attached properties rose nearly 7 percent. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Poll watchers will be permitted to observe election activities at polling stations countywide on Nov. 3, though COVID-19 related restrictions will limit the number of people allowed inside polling places.Social distancing requirements mean only about one to two observers might be rotated in and out of the polling places at any given time this year, Assistant Registrar of Voters Cynthia Paes said Thursday.The number of polling places in San Diego County has been reduced from 1,548 in March to 235 larger polling places that will be open for four days and are each expected to be staffed by about 15 county employees, Paes said.The role of poll watchers has garnered increased attention as part of the national discussion on voter fraud and voter intimidation sparked most recently by President Donald Trump's call at Tuesday's presidential debate for his supporters to monitor polling places on Election Day.Trump, who has frequently raised the specter of voter fraud and publicly expressed doubts over the security of mail-in voting, urged supporters Tuesday to "go into the polls and watch very carefully because that's what has to happen."Tony Krvaric, chair of the San Diego County Republican Party, said recruiting poll watchers is a typical practice, intended to ensure votes are cast and note any irregularities in the voting process."We always recruit for poll watchers and have done so for as long as I can remember," Krvaric told City News Service."Poll watchers help make sure Republicans who haven't voted are contacted and reminded to do so and keep an eye out for any irregularities. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Police Department conducted a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Officers focused on enforcing safety laws involving motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in the Northern Division, which includes Clairemont, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla and University City. They looked for drivers who were speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, or any other violations. They also searched for pedestrians who crossed the street illegally or failed to yield to drivers who have the right of way. Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked crosswalks or at intersections. Police have investigated several collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians during the past three years. In 2013, California had 701 pedestrian deaths, accounting for more than 23 percent of all roadway fatalities. The national average is 15 percent. Police say drivers should follow these safety tips:- Look out for bicyclists, pedestrians and scooter riders, especially at night or in bad weather.- Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or entering a crosswalk.- Stop at the crosswalk stop line to give drivers in other lanes an opportunity to see, and yield to pedestrians.- Be cautious when backing up.- Share the road with bicyclists.- California law requires at least three feet of clearance when passing a bike rider.- Look for cyclists before opening a car door or pulling out from a parking space.- Yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals.- Watch out for bike riders when making turns.Tips for pedestrians:- Cross at crosswalks or intersections, and obey signs and signals.- Walk facing traffic.- Don't text or talk on a cell phone while walking.- Make eye contact with drivers as they approach.- Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective materials, or use a flashlight, at night.- Look left-right-left before crossing a street.Tips for scooter riders:- Wear properly fitted helmets.- Riders are considered vehicle operators; they are required to obey the same rules of the road as other vehicle operators, including obeying traffic signs, signals, and lane markings.- When riding a scooter in the street, cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic.- When riding at night, scooter riders are required to have a front light and a red reflector to the rear- No passengers are allowed on any scooter. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Collaborative Clinical Trials Unit at UC San Diego has been selected to lead and administer an international seven-year, million grant for HIV/AIDS clinical trials.The National Institutes of Health selected UCSD, along with other American, South African and Indian research hospitals, as part of its seven-year HIV/AIDS funding renewal. Every seven years, NIH competitively renews its funding of the HIV clinical trials networks operating in the United States and internationally.During the current application process, the UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Houston AIDS Research Team and Durban International clinical research sites were chosen to work collaboratively on research priorities for the NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases HIV/AIDS Adult Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network.The Chennai Antiviral Research and Treatment Center, University of Southern California and University of Miami clinical research sites were also chosen to join UCSD to serve as qualified reserve or protocol-specific sites as needed for future clinical trials."UC San Diego has helped shape HIV/AIDS research and treatment through innovative research since the inception of the adult and pediatric therapeutic clinical trials networks in 1986," said principal investigator Dr. Constance A. In the United States, 1.2 million people are living with the virus.The UCSD-led clinical trials unit serves several regions in the United States burdened by chronic and new HIV infections as well as global regions impacted by both HIV and tuberculosis.The unit will investigate therapeutic strategies aimed at a cure for HIV, including evaluating viral persistence, researching antibody approaches to treatment and prevention and investigating treatment of inflammation and its impact on HIV comorbidities.In addition, investigators will study new drugs including long-acting drug formulations for HIV treatment and prevention, HIV-related coinfections and comorbidities -- including metabolic and end organ complications and a hepatitis B cure, as well as the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis, including TB preventive vaccines, in persons with mono- and HIV-coinfection."We are honored to lead a talented pool of investigators in a common goal of advancing research that clinically benefits people living with HIV," Benson said. 2830
