SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mesa College announced Friday the opening of its on-campus support center for current and former foster youth.The Fostering Academic Success and Transitions Center opened Thursday, coinciding with Mesa College's first week of classes in the fall 2019 semester. The FAST Center offers services such as tutoring, computer access and a food pantry and will serve as a gathering space for youth who have gone through the foster care system."The number one goal we had in creating this program was to make it extremely difficult to NOT be successful," FAST Scholars Program Coordinator Sade Burrell said. "The center is a place for students to get the resources they need, whether that includes counseling, tutoring, food, child care, emergency housing and any other need unique to their situation."Mesa College is the first community college in San Diego County to open an on-campus support center for students in the foster system. Currently, only about one-in-10 foster youth graduate from college and one-third of former foster youth are homeless by age 25. College officials hope the FAST Center will help quell those numbers for students in San Diego."What this center does is say, we see our foster youth. We see their experiences. We see the unique contributions that they bring to the campus; that we understand the many challenges or systemic barriers that are often placed in their way," said Ashanti Hands, the college's vice president of student services. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Registrar of Voters has received more than 560,000 ballots, it was announced Wednesday, more than three times the amount received at this point before the 2016 election.With less than two weeks remaining before the Nov. 3 election, the ballots are in the process of being put through a sorting machine that captures images of voters' signatures for comparison to ones the registrar has on file.Mail-in ballots were sent to all 1.9 million registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even to those who had not requested one. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The historic Hotel del Coronado is reopening Friday, ending the first closure in the hotel's 132-year history.The famous red-roofed hotel on Coronado Island's Orange Avenue closed with other hotels in late March as the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego.Hotels have started to reopen in June, following state and county public health guidelines. The Hotel del Coronado, a major tourist attraction, will reopen with limited amenities and reduced occupancy.Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza told 10News guests and hotel staff can expect to feel safe and comfortable after numerous modifications."We disinfect all the high-touch areas, including the light switches, remote control, door handles. We sanitize the entire room, and then we put a seal on the outside of the door so when guests do check in, they know that no one has accessed the room. They are the first person to access the room since it was cleaned and disinfected," Rapoza said.Rapoza added face coverings/masks will be required for all hotel staff and guests while in public areas. He also said there will be sanitation stands and cleaning wipes around the resort.Rapoza said as soon as they learned the hotel would be allowed to reopen, staff worked "fast and furious" to meet new health and safety guidelines."This is a very busy resort in the summer. There's a lot of foot traffic and we wanted to make sure we could manage through the guidelines. We want everyone to come and enjoy the Del and see the Del this summer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - People who visited the Lucky Lady Casino in San Diego on weekends over a six-month period ending in late September may have been exposed to tuberculosis, county health officials reported Tuesday.The Health and Human Services Agency is working with the casino to inform patrons and staff who may have been exposed between Feb. 23 and Sept. 30, said county spokesman Jose A. Alvarez.HHSA will provide testing at no cost to patrons who were potentially exposed, Alvarez said.
