WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Citing the desire to achieve financial stability while maintaining competitiveness, the College of William & Mary will discontinue seven of its 23 varsity sports.At the conclusion of the 20-21 academic year, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming, men's indoor and outdoor track & field, and women's volleyball will no longer be sponsored as Division I sports at the Williamsburg institution.In an open letter, Director of Athletics Samantha K. Huge said, "This is a wrenching decision. It will impact 118 student-athletes and 13 coaches. Altered, too, will be the lives of thousands of family members, former varsity letter award winners, alumni, fans, donors, and supporters of these seven sports programs."Over the past two decades, W&M says there have been several athletics program reviews conducted by groups both within – and external – to athletics. Each of these reviews, according to W&M, reached the same conclusion: William & Mary's model of sponsoring 23 varsity sports is unsustainable without a significant increase in funding through private philanthropy and revenue generation. While Democrats are projected to take control of the US House, the party hoped that a blue wave would include winning a number of major gubernatorial seats. But in two larger states, Republican candidates hung on and won in Florida and Ohio. This came as some polls showed Democrats leading in those states heading into Tuesday's Election Day. In Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis held off Andrew Gillum, the Democrat who is the mayor of Tallahassee. DeSantis held a 1-percent advantage with more than 99 percent reporting. In Ohio, Republican state Attorneys General Mike DeWine defeated Democrat Richard Cordray. Cordray was previously appointed to the Consumer Protection Finance Board by President Barack Obama. DeWine had previously defeated Cordray in 2010 for the state's AG position. In a fierce battle in Georgia, Democrat Stacey Abrams said she is vowing to continue her fight despite trailing Republican Brian Kemp by a 51 to 48 margin late on Tuesday. WIMAUMA, Fla. — A Florida deputy surprised a mother with new car seats instead of issuing her a ticket.Hillsborough County Deputy Jacky Nguyen was running traffic enforcement when he pulled over a mother for a minor traffic violation."As I approached the car, I saw two children in the backseat. They were without a car seat and looked to be young," said Deputy Nguyen.The deputy issued the mother a warning for the traffic violation but noticed her children, ages 3 and 5, were not properly restrained in the backseat."Just through conversation, I realized she may have been through some financial difficulties, She mentioned car seats are quite expensive, which they are," said Nguyen.Nguyen has a 5-year-old son himself. 731
