SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This election fired up voters and one Serra Mesa couple was driven by duty to vote for the first time.Anthony Joiner and Justine Gibson are engaged, and invested in this election."We recently became home owners and in the next few years we'll be parents hopefully so we feel like the future is in our hands and we want to be part of the decisions that are happening," Joiner said, with Gibson adding, "wanted to make it count."FIND YOUR POLLING PLACEJoiner said it felt great to cast his ballot for the first time, "I feel accomplished."Joiner and Gibson filled their ballots out in person. "We wanted the full experience," they said laughing."This year more than ever we felt the importance of voting and having our voices heard, this was primarily driven by the current political environment! I feel like the presidential race without a doubt is important, however equally as important are the local races/props that will have a direct impact on our quality of life," Gibson said.They didn't make their decisions in isolation, "we filled out our ballots together [at home]," Joiner said. "We’re pretty much on the same page on all things political and whatnot so it was a little bit easier," Gibson chimed in."We didn’t want our votes to cancel one another out so if we disagreed on something we would talk about it a little bit and see why," Joiner said laughing.Joiner said he hopes the tension fades after the election, "and I really want everyone to just get along really."Both hope for a positive outcome, "no matter what way it goes people just accept it," Joiner said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This Saturday's inauguration of a new president in Mexico was the topic of a forum Thursday at the University of San Diego. Experts and policy makers from both sides of the border shared their thoughts on what the new presidency will mean to the future of the relationship between the United States and Mexico."So much of what happens in Mexico doesn't stay in Mexico and so much of what happens in the United States happens along the U.S-Mexico border," said USD Professor David Shirk, who helped organize Thursday's forum.Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will become the first person to lead Mexico from the political left in several decades after a landslide victory in July elections. He ran on a platform of populist reforms."He's traditionally been a strong supporter of the rights of migrants and respecting their human rights and caring for them," said Tony Wayne, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico from 2011-2015 and attended Thursday's event. He's currently a Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Institute."They're going to have to try to pick things up as quickly as they can. Nobody wants a repeat of the kind of incident that you had a few days ago at the border," Wayne said, referring to the clashes between Central American migrants and Border Patrol agents near the San Ysidro border crossing Sunday.Wayne and Shirk share some optimism that Mexico's new administration will be able to find common ground with President Trump, despite their differences on policy. Wayne points out that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be traveling to Mexico the day after Lopez Obrador's inauguration. Shirk says the two presidents have already formed a bond based on similar styles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council unanimously approved David Nisleit as the next chief of the San Diego Police Department.A search committee interviewed candidates and took public comment on the hiring before announcing Nisleit as the top candidate February 1."SDPD is poised to enter a new era of excellence," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer at the news conference. Faulconer will conduct Nisleit's swearing-in ceremony Tuesday morning.“Dave Nisleit is a San Diegan who cares deeply about making our city better and keeping our neighborhoods safe,” the Mayor said in a statement Monday. “He is someone who holds himself and his officers to the highest ethical and professional standards. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There were about 20,600 students considered homeless in schools throughout San Diego in the 2017-18 school year, but the actual number is likely higher, according to the findings of a new state audit.The report by California State Auditor Elaine Howle concluded districts across the state are not doing enough to identify homeless students and connect them with the services they need for tutoring, transportation, and school supplies. The report also faulted the state Department of Education for "inadequate oversight."The audit was requested after Department of Education data showed more than 25 percent of California districts reported having no students experiencing homelessness despite the state’s ongoing homelessness crisis.RELATED: San Diego homeless count 2019: Data shows over 8,000 living on county streets or in shelters“We cannot serve them and work to improve their educational outcomes if we don’t know who they are,” said San Diego County Office of Education Homeless Coordinator Susie Terry.California uses a broad definition of homelessness under the McKinney-Veto Homeless Assistance Act. About 75 percent of students considered homeless are living in a household with two or more family units for economic reasons, a scenario known as “doubling up,” Terry said."Doubling up" is often a last ditch-effort to avoid life in a shelter or a vehicle, and a time when services are critically needed, she said.RELATED: San Diego County ranks fourth for number of homeless in the United StatesAuditors looked at the number of students receiving free and reduced-price lunches and compared that to research showing 5 to 10 percent of those students typically experience homelessness.Using that benchmark, the San Diego Unified School District scored well, with 8,129 homeless students and an identification rate of 11 percent.Districts with less than a 5 percent identification warrant further scrutiny and state oversight, the audit said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego announced Wednesday they've selected a developer for a new pod hotel concept near San Diego Bay.STAY OPEN was chosen to develop and operate the new low-cost, pod-style hotel concept that would be located on Pacific Highway between the Port's administration building and Palm Street.The concept envisions 33 rooms with eight to 12 pods per room. Each pod would include a single-occupancy bed, storage locker, power supply, ventilation control, privacy screen, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms would share one bathroom with shower facilities. And space on the hotel's rooftop would be reserved for a restaurant, bar, and outdoor seating open to the public.An exact price for an overnight stay in a pod was not released, but STAY OPEN partner JUCY Snooze offers the pod rentals in New Zealand starting at about per night.The goal behind to concept is to offer an inexpensive for travelers, similar to a hostel.
