BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Taking aspirin everyday may lower the risk of developing colon cancer for people with the cancer-causing genes, researchers found.The finding was published on Friday in the British medical journal "Lancet".The researchers followed 508 patients with Lynch syndrome, an inherited disorder which increases the risk of developing colon and other cancers.These patients were divided into two groups: members in one group took 600 mg aspirins everyday; another group took only the dummy pills.After 4 years, 10 colon cancer cases were reported among 258 patients who took daily aspirins for at least two years, comparing with 23 cases among 250 patients on dummy pills."This is good news for a very specific population," said Asad Umar, a cancer prevention expert at the U.S. National Cancer Institute.However, the finding doesn't apply to the general public, suggested the lead author of the study John Burn, a geneticist at Newcastle University in England.Only those who are at risk of such diseases should consider taking aspirin regularly, such as people having a family history of colon cancer, he added.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- U.S. researchers have demonstrated for the first time that the brain is a key player in regulating glucose (sugar) metabolism in humans.The findings, published Monday in the online edition of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, suggest that drugs targeting the brain and central nervous system could be a novel approach to treating diabetes."The brain is the body's only organ that needs a constant supply of glucose to survive, so it makes sense that it would have some say over how much glucose is produced," said study leader Meredith Hawkins, professor of medicine and director of the Global Diabetes Initiative at Yeshiva University, in a statement. "This role for the brain was demonstrated in earlier studies in rodents, but there was considerable controversy over whether the results could be applied to humans. We hope this study helps to settle the matter."In an earlier study in rodents, researchers showed that activation of potassium channels in the brain's hypothalamus sends signals to the liver that dampen its production of glucose. Those findings, published in Nature in 2005, challenged the conventional thinking that blood sugar production by the liver (the body's glucose factory) is regulated only by the pancreas (which makes insulin to metabolize glucose). But carefully performed studies on dogs, conducted at Vanderbilt University, failed to replicate the results, suggesting the Einstein findings in rodents might not be relevant to higher mammals, including humans.The current study, involving people, was aimed at resolving this controversy. Ten nondiabetic subjects were given oral diazoxide, a drug that activates potassium channels in the hypothalamus. (The drug is not used to treat diabetes.) Hormone secretion by the pancreas was controlled to ensure that any change in sugar production would only have occurred through the drug's effect on the brain. After the researchers administered the drug, blood tests revealed that patients' livers were producing significantly less glucose than before.Hawkins and her team then repeated this in rats, again giving diazoxide orally, achieving similar results. They confirmed that sufficient amounts of diazoxide crossed the blood-brain barrier to affect potassium channels in the hypothalamus. Additional experiments confirmed that diazoxide was working through the brain. Specifically, the researchers were able to completely block the effects of diazoxide by infusing a specific potassium channel blocker directly into the brain."This study confirms that the brain plays a significant role in regulating glucose production by the liver," said lead author Preeti Kishore, assistant professor of medicine. "We are now investigating whether this 'brain-to-liver' pathway is impaired in people with diabetes. If so, we may be able to restore normal glucose regulation by targeting potassium channels in the brain."

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Internet search giant Google on Thursday released its third fiscal quarter earnings report, posting strong numbers that beat analysts' estimates.The Mountain View, California-based company reported revenue of 9.72 billion U.S. dollars for the quarter ending Sept. 30, 2011, an increase of 33 percent on a year-on-year basis.Google reported a profit of 2.73 billion dollars, compared to 2. 17 billion dollars in the same period last year. The earning per share, excluding certain items, is 9.72 dollars, topping the average estimate of 8.74 dollars per share polled by Thomson Reuters."We had a great quarter," said Google co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Larry Page in a statement. "Google+ is now open to everyone and we just passed the 40 million user mark. People are flocking into Google+ at an incredible rate and we are just getting started."Many analysts took the third quarter to examine the company's progress towards expanding its core business beyond advertising which accounted for 96 percent of its revenue last year. In the past quarter, Google made major investments in several key businesses, such as social networking and mobile.In August, Google announced a 12.5-billion-dollar acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a move widely seen to get Motorola's patent portfolio to protect its Android software against a growing number of infringement lawsuits by rival mobile platforms. BANGKOK, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Bangkok residents gathered in the city centre on Thursday, making ten thousand micro-organism balls to help clean the polluted water in flooded areas.Organized by local volunteer groups, the activity aimed to make 10,000 Effective Micro-organism balls (EM Ball), which are proven to be efficient in cleaning contaminated floodwater.According to Danal Chanchaochai, the organizer of the event, people in flooded areas were facing critical conditions as germs may spread in polluted water and threat their health. Mainly consist of soil, rice bran and micro-organisms, a tennis-sized EM Ball is capable to clean up 10 liter of water and can last for as long as one month, which making it a perfect water sanitizer.Another main objective of the event was to educate citizens on the simple steps of making EM Balls, in case of more flood in the city, he said.The organization had generated buzz on social media sites like facebook and twitter, calling everyone to help.Held at Amarin Plaza, one shopping mall at city centre, the activity attracted groups of volunteers, including office workers, local students and even foreign visitors.Volunteers were lining up to get the raw materials from the collection point and gave back completed EM Balls to the distribution centre in boxes. Residents needed to present their identity cards in order to retrieve the donated water cleaners.Volunteer Kulawan Ayura Chai said that, although her house hadn' t been affected by water yet, she understood the difficult situation faced by the victims and felt responsible to help.Lasted for three days from Thursday to Saturday, the activity aimed to make 100,000 EM Balls, adding to the 30,000 balls made earlier, to distribute to the flood victims in Bangkok and other regions in Thailand.
