SAN DIEGO (AP and CNS) — A white Christmas was in store for parts of California with wet weather elsewhere in the state that could mean dangerous driving conditions and possible power outages."A storm system is coming and after about 10 p.m. tonight, we'll begin having scattered showers that will continue through the day on Christmas," NWS forecaster Samantha Connolly said of the San Diego impact. "The storm system will bring cooler temperatures through tomorrow, and snow above 5,000 feet."Connolly said temperatures will drop into the high 50s to 60s in most of San Diego on Christmas day. She said temperatures in the mountains are expected to dip into the 30s and 40s during the storm.RELATED: Check Your 10News Pinpoint Weather Forecast"We will have gusty winds as well through the day and night," Connolly said. "Wind gusts will be up to 30 mph along the coasts and in the inland valleys, and as much as 50 to 60 mph in the mountains and deserts."One-tenth to one-quarter of an inch of rain is expected along the coast and in the inland valleys and the deserts on Christmas. Half an inch to an inch of rain is expected in the mountains. The NWS forecaster said the storm will leave San Diego later in the day on Christmas. Wednesday, the day after the storm, is expected to be dry. But more light rain could be on the way."We have another potential storm system that could come in on Thursday and Friday," Connolly said. "We're expecting a little rain from that, but not much."The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory Monday for higher elevations in San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, Ventura and Kern counties. The weather service said the fast-moving storm system was expected to move into Southern California late Monday, bringing up to 4 inches of snow to elevations above 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) including Big Bear, Wrightwood and the Grapevine area of Interstate 5.The system also was expected to bring gusty winds between 40 and 60 mph (64 to 97 kph) and a chance of rain at lower elevations. The conditions could create snowy and ice-covered roads with low visibility and strong cross winds. The California Department of Transportation said chains will be required in mountain areas. In Northern California, the weather service issued a flash flood watch for an area of Mendocino County that was charred by wildfires earlier this year. The warning was in effect from noon until 6 p.m. Monday. Motorists traveling along Highway 20 should be on alert for possible road flooding, rockslides and debris flows, it said. The fire in July blackened 717 square miles (1,857 square kilometers), much of it in Mendocino National Forest. The weather service also issued a coastal flood advisory in parts of the San Francisco Bay Area until 2 p.m. Monday because of higher than normal tides.Holiday travelers in parts of the Sierra Nevada could see up to 2 feet of snow in some mountain passes at elevations of about 6,000 feet. Forecasters say that by Tuesday, snow could fall at lower mountain elevations. 3042

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A gun control group has filed a lawsuit on behalf of victims the Poway synagogue shooting against several parties, including the alleged shooter, his parents, the gun store that sold him the weapon used in the deadly shooting and the weapon's manufacturer, Smith & Wesson. The suit filed Monday in San Diego Superior Court alleges `irresponsible and unlawful conduct by a firearms manufacturer and seller for making, marketing, or selling weapons in an unsafe and illegal manner'' in connection with the rifle allegedly used by John T. Earnest, 21, in the April 27, 2019, shooting at Chabad of Poway. The suit filed by the gun control advocacy group Brady United accuses Smith & Wesson of failing to ``use reasonable care'' when marketing the rifle -- a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 -- and alleged the company made the weapon ``easily modifiable,'' which facilitates crimes like mass shootings. The lawsuit also alleges gun store San Diego Guns unlawfully sold Earnest the rifle used in the shooting, as he lacked a valid hunting license to buy such as weapon at his age.The suit also alleges Earnest's parents ``negligently facilitated their son's (the shooter's) ability to gain access to one or more pieces of weaponry/tactical equipment used in the incident, upon information and belief, having prior knowledge of his avowed, virulent anti-Semitism and propensity for violence.''The shooting resulted in the death of 60-year-old Lori Gilbert Kaye, who was shot in the synagogue's foyer. Three others were injured, including the synagogue's rabbi, Yisroel Goldstein, who is among several people listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.Earnest remains jailed on both state and federal charges for the shooting, as well as the alleged arson of an Escondido mosque, both of which are being charged as hate crimes.Earnest allegedly told a dispatcher that he committed the shooting because Jewish people were destroying the white race and made similar anti-Semitic comments in an online manifesto in which he said he spent four weeks planning the attack.Earnest faces the death penalty in the state's prosecution, while a federal capital punishment decision remains pending.According to testimony, a receipt found in Earnest's car showed he purchased the rifle at San Diego Guns on April 13, 2019, the same day a California Fish and Wildlife card found in his bedroom showed he completed a hunting program, qualifying him for a hunting license. However, the license -- which would allow someone in California under 21 to purchase a gun -- was not valid until that July. Without a valid license, Earnest would have been prohibited from purchasing the rifle under state law, as he was 19 at the time of the purchase. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Department of Justice are also named as defendants for alleged negligence in allowing Earnest to buy the gun when a background check should have precluded him from purchasing it. 2968

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Jury deliberations have resumed in the trial of a Southern California man charged with killing a family of four and burying their bodies in the desert.Jurors last Thursday got the case brought by San Bernardino County prosecutors against 62-year-old Charles "Chase" Merritt. The jury was off Friday and deliberations started again Monday.Merritt's business associate Joseph McStay, McStay's wife Summer and the couple's 3- and 4-year-old sons vanished from their San Diego County home in 2010. Three years later, their bodies were found in shallow desert graves more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) away.Merritt was arrested in 2014. Authorities said they traced his cellphone to the gravesite area and to a call seeking to close McStay's online bookkeeping account. If Merritt is convicted, prosecutors will seek the death penalty. 869

SAN DIEGO — An aging shopping center right across from one of San Diego's most luxurious could be in for a major revitalization project. The 31-year-old Costa Verde shopping center is right across from the modern Westfield UTC. The center, at the corner of Genesee and Nobel, serves the community with grocery stores, places to eat, exercise, and get gas and dry cleaning. However, it has several vacancies and there are always empty parking spaces. Now, it appears to be in for a major overhaul that would help it fit right in with Westfield UTC. Owner Regency Centers is moving toward tearing down the entire mall, except for the McDonalds and gas station/car wash on the southwest end. It would then rebuild the retail portion, with the same community serving stores. But, this time, it would add a 200-room business hotel, and 400,000 square-feet of biotech office space, partnering with Alexandria Real Estate."The neighborhood is the most dynamic neighborhood, not only in San Diego County, not only in Southern California, not even on the west coast," said John Murphy, who is leading the project for Regency Centers. "It is one of the most dynamic pieces of property in the country."The San Diego Planning Commission unanimously recommended the project for approval Thursday. It will next go before the City Council, likely in October. If all goes as planned, ground could break in 2021, with the retail portion ready by the holidays of 2023. 1458
