BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The quake zone of Yushu in northwest China has received donations valued at over 8.5 billion yuan (about 1.25 billion U.S. dollars) as of Monday, with about 90 percent being in cash and the remaining in relief materials, said the civil affairs ministry.The ministry said in a statement that it received 2.407 billion yuan while the Qinghai provincial government of the quake zone received nearly 2 billion yuan in donations, with the Red Cross Society of China and the China Charity Federation each raising about 2 billion yuan.About ten percent of the total donations had been allocated to quake relief work along with reconstruction and restoration, the statement said.Yushu was hit by a 7.1-magnitude quake on April 14, with more than 2,200 people being killed and thousands of homes flattened.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said on June 20 that the government would soon implement a reconstruction plan for the area, which sets a goal to accomplish major reconstruction tasks within three years.

BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese government official has called for more efforts to promote increased awareness about energy-savings among the public and increase investments into research for energy-saving technologies.Vice Premier Li Keqiang made the remark in his letter to sponsors of China's 20th national energy-saving publicity week (June 12 to June 18) that ended on Friday.Various campaigns and promotional activities were held during the week to increase awareness about conserving energy among all communities and also promote energy-saving practices, Li said in the letter.Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said government should put more investment into research for energy-saving technologies.Additionally, long-term mechanisms for energy-savings should be established so that the 11th Five-Year Plan energy-saving goals could be realized, Li said.China seeks to reduce energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent in 2010 compared to 2005 levels, according to the country's 11th five-year plan (2006-2010).The 20th national energy-saving publicity week was sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission and 13 other government agencies.

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.

WUXI, Jiangsu, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Yuan Longping, known as the "father of hybrid rice", said on Sunday that his team was working on a new version of high-yield hybrid rice and might complete it in 2012.Yuan, director of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center and a faculty member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, made the remarks at the World Expo's third theme forum, which opened on Sunday in Wuxi, in east China's Jiangsu Province.The new hybrid, the phase-III super hybrid rice, was expected to yield 13.5 tonnes of rice per hectare, Yuan said.The previous hybrid, the second-generation super hybrid, was released for commercial production in 2006, yielding 9 tonnes of rice per hectare, on averageRice is a major food crop that feeds more than half of the world's population, Yuan said.China is now planting 440 million mu (29 million hectares) of rice per year, with an average output capacity of 6.3 tonnes per hectare.Among the acreage, hybrid rice accounts for about 57 percent of the total, with an average output capacity of 7.2 tonnes per hectare."The average yield of hybrid rice is at least 20 percent more than that of inbred rice, feeding 70 million more people annually," Yuan said.China is faced with a challenging grain situation this summer because of strong rainfalls in the south during the summer harvest season.
