Lava flowing from the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii has been seen carving its way through homes, trees, even an unfortunately parked mustang with no end in sight. Thirty-five homes have been destroyed since the volcano erupted last week. "Within 24 hours of being notified they deployed," said Lt. Colonel Michael Spencer. Lt. Colonel Spencer with the Arizona National Guard says the scale of the event has led them to deploy their Civil Support Team. "Lava produces a chemical called sulfur dioxide which is very toxic," Lt. Colonel Spencer said. Over the last 30 hours, that team has been on the ground using specialized equipment to monitor the deadly gases emitted from the lava flow. Many times that gas will form an unpredictable toxic cloud, it's their job to track it and predict its movement. "So identifying what the levels are, if they're elevated levels in what areas so they can identify what areas need to be evacuated immediately," Lt. Colonel Spencer said.  "The lava and the eruptions are sort of an obvious danger, and the gas is invisible and often times odorless," said Dr. Kayla Iacovino. Dr. Iacovino is a volcano researcher at Arizona State University. She says the lava produces numerous gases as it tumbles through the landscape."It can burn your eyes and your nose, and get into your lungs and cause damage to your airways," Dr. Iacovino said. Two new cracks spewing lava and gas opened up Monday on the Big Island. The lava flow has now covered the equivalent of more than 75 seventy-five football fields. And while the guardsmen protect those on the ground, Dr. Iacovino is using mountains of data to learn all she can here in the Valley to protect residents in the future. "We can use that information to try and predict eruptions and also to try and protect people when the eruptions occur, where's the lava gonna go, what are the gases gonna do," Dr. Iacovino said.  2001

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The family of a La Mesa woman says their mother in a medically induced coma after getting shot with a projectile that lodged between her eyes.Leslie Furcron was among thousands of people protesting Saturday night in front of the La Mesa Police Department. She was recording on Facebook Live. You can hear her yelling, then the phone drops, and the screen goes black."She was brutally attacked on a peaceful protest. If I commit a crime. I'm going to jail, no if's and or buts about it," said one of her sons, Ahmed Furcron.He says bystanders rushed her to the hospital. Her prognosis is unclear, but the family says she may lose an eye.Attorney Dante Pride is representing the family. Pride and other family members held a news conference outside the La Mesa Police Department Tuesday. "We are going to get justice. We will not be silenced, everyone who is watching this I want you to call the La Mesa police department and ask them what is that officer's name who decided he could attempt to murder a non-violent protestor?" asked Pride.Pride says the police department hasn't provided any information about what happened. The family believes she was hit with a rubber bullet or bean bag casing, but they're waiting for the hospital to confirm.During the news conference, a reporter said they had witness information that Furcron through a bottle, but the family says that is absolutely false."I have no evidence that she threw anything, she dropped a can when she got shot," said Pride."Even if she did throw a can, does she deserve to get shot in the face, that's all we want to know," said Ahmed.Pride also points to the La Mesa Police Departments' own training rules, which say bean bag munitions should not be aimed above the waist. (KGTV) - The mother of a crash victim is pleading for the driver of the car to come forward.Monica Cloyd said her son, Michael Gutierrez, was severely injured Saturday morning on Wildcat Canyon Road near the Barona Casino when the driver of the car he was in crashed into a pole.She says the car belonged to her son, a 23-year-old ironworker, but said he had been drinking so he gave his keys to his friend.RELATED: Prosecutors: Ramona driver tried to hide evidence of hit-and-run crashEarlier in the night, she said they had been at a party in La Jolla but her son’s friend ended up driving them to Barona instead of going home.They made it to the casino, but on the way back, the car crashed along Wildcat Canyon Road.Cloyd said a 16-year-old girl was also in the car and was seriously injured.RELATED: Hit-and-run victim placed on life support days before his wedding dayThe man who was driving ran from the scene, according to Cloyd. She said authorities have not been able to locate him. (WFTS) -- This week, Amazon kicked thousands of sellers off its site for price gouging and Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody announced she’s investigating dozens of sellers amid the growing coronavirus pandemic.But KGTV sister station WFTS in Florida learned that while those sellers were making big profits off customers’ fear and misery, Amazon substantially raised its own prices on products like hand sanitizer, protective masks and toilet paper.Wayne Farmer sells groceries on Amazon, shipping them in boxes to customers out of his Lithia, FL home.“When this pandemic hit in the past month, our business has really just doubled, tripled,” Farmer said.Farmer knows his items are expensive because he has to pay a shopper to buy them at retail price at local stores, then he pays to ship them to Amazon or directly to customers and he pays Amazon fees of up to 30 percent.“When you see a price out there of on six cans of something, just realize at the end, the person who originated that, me, may have made ,” he said.But other Amazon sellers may have been price gouging, which is defined as when a seller increases the prices of goods, services of commodities to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair.Earlier this week, Amazon announced it removed 500,000 listings and 3,900 third-party sellers from its site for suspected price gouging.More than half of Amazon’s total annual sales come from those sellers.According to Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, those sellers on Amazon the site raised prices by up to 1,600 percent for things like hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies and protective masks.But the I-Team has learned those third-party sellers weren’t alone in substantially raising prices.“When we looked at the data, we saw price increases from both Amazon and third-party sellers,” said Greg Mercer, founder and CEO of Jungle Scout.That company tracks Amazon sales data and sells it to third-party vendors.Mercer says Amazon not only earned commissions from those sellers accused of price gouging, it also more than doubled its own prices on essential goods as the COVID-19 pandemic grew between early January and mid-March.At one point earlier this month, Amazon listed a four-pack of its own brand of toilet paper for .We contacted Amazon about Jungle Scout’s findings, but a spokesperson wouldn’t directly answer our question about whether Amazon engaged in price gouging.She said in an emailed statement:· Amazon is working with state Attorneys General and sharing information to help them hold price gougers accountable· Amazon has instituted additional manual audits of products in its stores due to the increase risk of price gouging from unscrupulous sellers seeking to evade their automated systems and take advantage of consumers· Amazon leverages a number of automated and manual methods to detect potential price gouging in our store. LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Kids are heading back to school, and in order to make sure they're successful in the classroom, doctors say their success is dependent on the amount of sleep they're getting.According to Dr. Jose Colon, a sleep specialist with Lee Health in Florida, it's important to make sure kids not only get the proper amount of sleep every night, but making sure they get into a routine a few days before they're back at school."If we're sleeping in for a longer period of time, which we commonly do sometimes during the summer, we're delaying the exposure to the sunlight and that alters your own natural melatonin, making it so that you have this predisposition towards staying up later," Colon says.He also says set a specific wake up time for kids no later than a few days before they start school. In order to help them get to bed earlier, help them get relaxed by avoiding electronics with LED light."You don't have to walk around the dark with your eyes closed, but doing what you can to minimize artificial lights is going to help your melatonin naturally come out," he says.If kids can't avoid technology, Colon says there's a setting to lower the LED light on most devices. Also, taking a warm bath at night can help kids get to sleep, according to Colon. He says the body will become naturally warmer, but the temperature will drop after leaving the tub. That drop in temperature will help cool the body, which ultimately helps with sleep.He also says adding a few drops of lavender in the bath can help."Lavender oil has been shown to decrease cortisol, which is our stress hormone, and it's helpful for sleep," he says.Still not sleeping? Colon says there are a few at home remedies to try."Melatonin has been studied in children with ADHD, Autism, neurodevelopment disabilities and even with people with migraines and it's been shown to be safe and effective," he says.Colon says to purchase the melatonin with a "GNC" label.
