TAMPA BAY, Fla. — About four million Kia and Hyundai vehicle owners are one step closer to receiving a piece of the nearly 0 million settlement over an engine defect linked to cars and SUVs spontaneously bursting into flames.The settlement deal, first announced last year, would cover reimbursement for past repairs and expenses, free repair or replacement of damaged engines, denied warranty coverage, and loss of vehicle value.ABC Action News I-team Investigator Jackie Callaway first exposed the cause behind these fires in the report “Up in Flames” in 2018.That’s also the year Tisha VanAllen’s 2011 Kia Optima caught fire as she was driving down a Mississippi highway.“The car started stuttering and I pulled over and when I did it was just engulfed in flames,” she said.VanAllen became trapped in the burning car.“I tried my passenger door, my driver's door, it would not budge,” she said.Panicking, she kicked at the door and window before a truck driver pulled over and wrestled the door open.“He kept yanking on the door handle until he finally got it to open up and he just grabbed me and yanked me out,” she said.The loss of her car devastated the finances of the single mother of four. And at one point she faced eviction.“It just put me in a downward spiral,” VanAllen said.Kia and Hyundai, under the settlement terms, will pay VanAllen and millions of other drivers’ repairs, damage, and loss of vehicle value.Kia did not respond to a request for comment but a Hyundai spokesperson wrote in an email that, "this settlement acknowledges our sincere willingness to take care of customers impacted by issues with this engine’s performance....."The class-action lawsuit includes drivers who owned or leased the following vehicles with 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection engines:2011-2019 Hyundai Sonata2013-2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport2014-2015 and 2018-2019 Hyundai Tucson2011-2019 Kia Optima2012-2019 Kia Sorento2011-2019 Kia SportageA federal court hearing for final approval is set for November 12 and a judge is expected to grant formal approval of the settlement before the end of the year. Talking with teens about drugs and alcohol may not be the easiest thing. But research shows kids whose parents do, are 50 percent less likely to abuse those substances. One family is going beyond the talk, and developing a plan we can all learn from.Snack time at the Wardell house is more than a time to eat. It's also a chance for Karla Wardell to check in with her kids. And while these topics may be light ones, conversations on heavier topics don't look much different.  Wardell says she started talking with her teenage children, Brandon and Elissa, about drugs and alcohol when they were young. She says she's honest with them about the reality of drugs and alcohol, and pushes them to think about how they might react if around them. And if there's a situation her kids can't get themselves out of, the Wardell's have developed a plan for that.  "We have a little code word they can text or a call," Karla Wardell says. "And if they text and they write something like what time do you want me home but if home is all capitalized that is their SOS to me like I want to come home."  Elissa Wardell has had to send her mom a text like that, and even uses a way to delete it to be even more discreet.  "Your friends won't be able to see that you have said I want to go home," Elissa Wardell says. "They will just think that your parents are being mean and you can go home."  Steve Martinez works with Speak Now, a campaign that encourages parents to have conversations with young ones about the dangers of substance use.  "If a parent feels that it is wrong for example to binge drink or use substances, that teens are three times less likely to use," Martinez says.  Martinez says conversations can happen anywhere, and can start when a child is as young as nine. He says approach matters, and scare tactics don't work.  What does work? Building trust. One conversation at a time."The bond that parents have with their kids is it's really special," Karla Wardell says. "And we need to recognize that and our kids will listen to us if we have the courage to talk with them." 2126

Target announced on Thursday that it is targeting diversity.In a press release, the retailer says they plan to increase its Black workforce by 20% in the next three years by "sharpening its focus on advancement, retention, and hiring."“The changes we’re making are going to have a meaningful impact on the careers of our Black team members and prospective team members,” said Kiera Fernandez, Vice President, Human Resources and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer in the press release. “A diverse and inclusive team at Target is one where there’s equity in how we promote, retain, and hire team members. Additional leadership development, training programs, and mentorship for our Black team members, along with a focus in areas of the business where our Black representation is not as strong, will offer new career development opportunities for our team for years to come. TAMPA, Fla. -- A former Tampa Bay Lightning player is on his way to becoming a sworn firefighter for the city of Tampa.“I think it’s very similar to the teamwork, the bond together, the brotherhood. It keeps you in shape and it’s very important for us to keep people safe and I want to be a hero to my children,” said Nikita Alekseev.Alekseev is a former first-round draft pick for the Lightning. Since then, he’s studied, graduated from the fire academy, has had EMT training and is finishing his final days of recruit training for Tampa Fire Rescue over the next week.“I have a lot of friends in the service here. I’ve been in the stations throughout my career just visiting and I’m a big community guy so I really like to help the people of the city,” he said.On Thursday, he said his focus was on consistency and efficiency.“Obviously, we’re just starting out so I want to get as much info on every little situation where it’s gonna help me to save my life and my crew. It’s very important to listen to what the instructor’s saying,” he said.The city’s new hires ran through engine company operations, practicing with the fire hose, going through a building and putting water on a building.“It doesn’t matter how big you are, how strong you are, you have to have a technique. It’s a lot of water and you can’t win it. So a lot of good instructors showed me how to do the right things, how to position yourself right and so it helps a lot,” Alekseev said.His fellow recruits include newcomers and legacies, everyone starting from the same place no matter their background.“What I hope is they take the training out here, bring it to the street, continue the training to continue gaining experience, knowledge and becoming a well rounded professional firefighter,” said Tampa Fire Rescue Captain Dan Quatrino.Alekseev and 14 others are part of the department’s first recruit class during the pandemic.“It makes a lot of the day to day operations we do unique and new to all of us,” said Quatrino.After finishing their final days of training, they’ll be sworn in next week.“It’s a small step to achievement, I guess. I want to make proud of the instructors, my friends in the service, my family, my kids, so it’s not really about me it’s about who’s behind this,” said Alekseev.Alekseev said his message to others, is to have goals, work towards them and follow-through, no matter your age.“Ultimate goal? Sunbeam Products has issued a voluntary recall of more than 940,000 Crock-Pot multi-cookers in the United States and Canada due to a burn hazard.According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall notice, the Crock-Pot? 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers, model number SCCPPC600-V1, were sold at Walmart, Target, Amazon, and other online and nationwide retailers from July 2017 through Nov. 2020 for between to 0.According to the website, the recalled product can pressurize when the lid is not fully locked, which can "cause the lid to suddenly detach while the product is in use, posing burn risks to consumers from hot food and liquids ejected from the product."Sunbeam, which owns Crock-Pot, recalled 914,430 affected products in the U.S., along with another 28,330 cookers in Canada, after receiving "119 reports of lid detachment, resulting in 99 burn injuries ranging in severity from first-degree to third-degree burns," the CPSC stated.Sunbeam manufactured the multi-cookers between July 1, 2017, and October 1, 2018.The notice says date codes K196JN through K365JN and L001JN through L273JN are engraved on a prong of the electrical plugs and the bottom of the base.Consumers should stop using the recalled product in pressure cooker mode immediately. Still, they can continue to use it for slow cooking and sautéing and contact Crock-Pot to receive a free lid replacement."Consumers who continue using the multi-cooker in pressure cooker mode while waiting for the replacement lid should be certain the lid is securely turned to the fully locked position by aligning the arrow on the lid with the lock symbol on the base," the notice said. 1680
