BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Friday China would work closely with Sweden to lift bilateral ties to a new level.While meeting with Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf in Beijing, Hu said China highly values relations with Sweden and will further promote cooperation between the two countries in the spirit of mutual respect and benefit."China and Sweden have no conflict of fundamental interests despite different national conditions, and good bilateral ties have brought tangible benefits to both peoples," said Hu.Hu also highlighted the smooth development of bilateral ties since the two countries established diplomatic relations 60 years ago.Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) meets with Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf in Beijing, capital of China, May 21, 2010.Sweden was the first western country to forge diplomatic ties with New China.The Swedish King, who arrived in Beijing Thursday for a five-day visit to China, recalled the friendly exchanges between Sweden and China over the past 60 years, saying Hu's 2007 visit to Sweden had boosted bilateral cooperation.An innovation forum, jointly held by the two countries, will have a positive influence on cooperation in new fields between the two countries, said the Swedish King.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang expressed hope the two nations would increase innovation cooperation while addressing the forum.China's innovation business has made certain achievements while Sweden is one of the world's most innovative and inventive nations, Li said.

BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) said Saturday it would assemble more than 1,100 engineers and workers from across the country to dig over 1,600 wells in the country's southwest, where a severe drought is likely to continue.All of those professionals would be arriving at the droughty areas by April 1 and the first batch set off on Saturday, said the MLR in a statement on its website.More than 1,600 wells would be drilled, providing 200,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day for 2 million people and 1 million head of livestock, said the ministry, hoping to finish digging 1,400 of the wells by May 10.So far, the MLR has already dug over 100 wells, which can produce drinking water for more than 100,000 people.The drought, which has left southwest China suffering since last Autumn, would likely continue till May as no substantial rainfall was expected ahead of the rainy season, according to meteorological agencies.It has left 18 million residents and 11.7 million heads of livestock in the region with drinking water shortages and caused direct economic losses of 23.7 billion yuan (3.5 billion U.S. dollars), data from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed.

  

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China's disaster relief authorities Wednesday launched an emergency response plan to help victims of the rainstorms and flooding in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which has left at least 30 dead.The China National Committee for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs initiated a level IV emergency response plan and dispatched a working team to help guide relief work in the flood-hit zone.Heavy rains began pounding many places in Guangxi Monday and triggered landslides early Wednesday. The disaster has left 30 dead and 18 missing, according to latest official figures.Villagers carry their belongings in the flood at Shanglang Village of Gupeng Township in Xincheng County in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, June 2, 2010.More than 80,000 local people had been evacuated from their homes as of 7 p.m. Wednesday, said a notice on the ministry website.More than 2.1 million people in Guangxi were affected by the disaster and more than 4,200 homes had been damaged, the notice said.The ministry had allocated a batch of relief materials, including 2,000 tents, the notice said.Guangxi's regional civil affairs department also initiated a level-IV emergency response plan Wednesday noon, allocating 1,200 tents and 1,000 cotton quilts to help settle victims.Under a level IV plan, the lowest of the four responses, the committee and the ministry should send a working team within 24 hours to the disaster zone and allocate relief materials within 48 hours.According to the ministry's working regulation on emergency response issued last year, emergency response plans should be initiated to help with relief work in natural disasters across the country. The level depends on damages and losses as well as the number of affected people.

  

PRETORIA, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin on Tuesday discussed with South African President Jacob Zuma on seeking stronger bilateral relations and coordinating the two countries' stances on climate change.Jia first extended the warm greetings and good wishes of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Zuma, who in return conveyed his greetings to Hu. Hu and Zuma have met several times on the sidelines of the international summits since Zuma took presidency last May.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, was making the visit at the invitation of the National Council of Provinces of South Africa.
