BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters launched an orange alert on Wednesday, urging local authority to be fully aware of the grim situation and give drought-relief work top priority.     The unprecedented drought which started last November, has affected 146 million mu (9.73 million hectares) of crops nationwide by February 4, among which 42.19 million mu are severely affected, according to the latest figure released by the headquarter office.     About 139 million of wheat land in the eight wheat-producing provinces were threatened, comprising 46 percent of the total wheat croplands in the areas. Drought has hit most of Henan Province, one of China's key wheat producing regions, due to lack of rainfall since last October.Some 3.98 million people and 1.95 million livestock are short of drinking water.     The headquarter office asked local governments to be accountable for relief work and make every effort to expand irrigation areas.     The local authority should enact integrated plans on water distribution to minimize the risk of the drought, according to an emergency notice by the headquarter office.     Four more working teams were sent to the drought-hit areas on Monday to supervise the relief work.     The Ministry of Finance is expected to arrange more funds, after the previous 100 million yuan (14.6 million U.S. dollars) to support the relief effort.

BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China and Venezuela agreed here Wednesday to step up cooperation in fields such as energy, agriculture, and high technology and take joint actions in the face of the global financial crisis.     The agreement was reached in a meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his visiting Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the two exchanged in-depth views on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern and reached an important consensus.     Hu highlighted the robust growth of bilateral relations during the meeting, saying that China was satisfied with the positive outcomes from bilateral economic and technological cooperation, progress made on some key projects and close coordination on international and regional issues. BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Another Chinese delegation of businesses and industry leaders, led by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), left for four European countries Saturday for investment and economic cooperation, the MOC said.     The business delegation, following purchases totaled more than 10 billion U.S. dollars in Europe by a Chinese procurement delegation in late February, are heading for the same destinations of Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Britain.     The new delegation will explore investment opportunities on areas of automobile, machinery, textile, food, electronics and technologies relating to energy saving and environment protection.     An MOC official said "the move would further strengthen cooperation between Chin and Europe and create a win-win result in tackling the global economic downturn."     The delegation are composed of more than 20 top Chinese companies, as well as several national trade associations and government officials.

MANDALAY, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), visited China-funded projects in Myanmar and other industrial and educational facilities amidst his on-going visit.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, visited the Myanmar's 3G core network, which was built by China's ZTE Corporation, one of China's leading telecom equipment producers.     After listening to reports from both sides, Li said that information and communication industry played an important role in modern society. "I am glad to see the results you have already achieved and hope you can enhance strategic cooperation in the telecom field."     He also urged ZTE and other Chinese companies in Myanmar to transfer technologies to their partners, train local technical contingent for better serving the clients and the local society.     On Friday afternoon, Li visited Hlaing Thar Yar city of industry and listened to the briefing of local officials. He also visited a plastic pipe plant and a factory of traditional Myanmar medicines.     Early on Saturday, Li flew from Yangon to Mandalay, the country's second largest city, and visited Mandalay industrial training center. The center was set up with a grant of 30 million RMB (4.39million U.S. dollar) from the Chinese government. It was designed to train local technicians for automotive production and maintenance.     Myanmar is the second-leg of Li's four-nation tour which will also take him to the Republic of Korea and Japan. BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin Friday called for actively promoting friendly religious exchanges with the outside world on an equal base but firmly stemming foreign infiltration in the name of religion.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks when addressing a seminar on religious work for ministerial and provincial level officials.     "The Party and the government have always attached great importance to religious work," said Jia, also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau.     The CPC Central Committee has made "a series of major decisions and arrangements as well as new achievements in religious work, while the country's religious sector has maintained a united and stable situation," he said.     Jia, however, warned that officials should pay high attention to some new situations and developments in the country's religious field, along with the developments and changes in international and domestic situation, and deal with them in a proper way.     He called for firmly implementing central decisions and arrangements, going all out to safeguard harmony and stability in the religious sector, and making maximal efforts to unite both religious and non-religious people and encourage them to devote themselves to the socialist cause with China's own characteristics.     The workshop was organized jointly by the Organizational Department and the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, the State Administration of Religious Affairs, and the National School of Administration.
