The news of dogs?left tied up, abandoned by owners in Palm Beach County to fend for themselves during Hurricane Irma, disturbed many of you, and us.The question .. will Palm Beach County hold those pet owners accountable?  It's not something the animals asked for, to be abandoned by their families, for a storm. "Absolutely unacceptable. People need to be responsible pet owners in this community," says State Attorney Dave Aronberg."The animals should be a valued part of your family and they should be a part of your plan," says Animal Care and Control Capt. Dave Walesky. More than 50 dogs and 15 cats were surrendered to Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. Around 38 other dogs, left to fend for themselves, mostly in the Glades area.  "Many of them were loose inside fenced yards, some were loose in the community where they just got turned loose or some were tied and left in small cages," says Walesky. "One of the dogs was left tied to a structure with a bowl of water and a bunch of bananas." It's not just sad, it's a crime. "And there is no excuse for leaving your pet behind to die. We are going to hold accountable those who we can prove left their dogs behind in the storm," says Aronberg.   1261

The jurors who convicted James Fields of murder could soon decide whether they think he should spend the rest of his life behind bars.Fields, 21, was attending last year's "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, when counterprotesters demonstrated against the white nationalists. That afternoon, Fields got in his Dodge Challenger and plowed into the counterprotesters at about 28 mph, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.The Charlottesville jury found Fields guilty of first-degree murder Friday. Fields was also found guilty of eight counts of malicious wounding and one count of failing to stop at an accident involving a death.On Monday, jurors will begin the sentencing phase of Fields' trial. Ultimately, Judge Richard Moore will decide Fields' sentence, but will consider the jury's recommendation.Jurors are expected to hear victim impact statements, possibly from Heyer's family or surviving victims from the August 2017 attack.Heyer, a 32-year-old paralegal, was devoted to helping people and had a passion for justice, her family said.Heyer's friend Marissa Blair attended the counterprotest with her and said Heyer fought against bigotry."If you knew Heather, you would know that she loves everyone and all she wants is equality for everyone, no matter who you love, no matter what color you are," Blair said.It's not clear when the judge will formally sentence Fields for the murder of Heyer.But in addition to the state charges, Fields also faces 30 federal hate crimes charges. The oldest American survivor of the Japanese air attack on Pearl Harbor has died.  Ray Chavez was 106.Gary Bobileff of the Spirit of Freedom Foundation told 10News, "He was a humble man and he was truly a patriot."Seaman first class Ray Chavez was assigned to the Navy minesweeper U.S.S. Condor; it was on continuous duty for the next nine days in the waters around Pearl Harbor.  Bobileff described his focus as two-fold."Number one; love of country; that is of paramount important. Number two: Be strong, be bold, be brave."Chavez has often attended commemorative events in San Diego and in Hawaii.  A few months ago Ray Chavez was invited to the White House."The president acknowledged him, shook hands."Richard Rovsek, also from the Spirit of Liberty Foundation of Rancho Santa Fe, recalls the moment."It was very emotional; the president was charming as he can be. The owl rescued from the Rockefeller Christmas tree is being memorialized by Frontier Airlines.On Tuesday, the airline company announced that the northern saw-whet owl, which was discovered in the Rockefeller Christmas tree last month, will be featured on the tail of their new Airbus A320neo aircraft.The aircraft is set to roll out sometime in 2021.“We’re always looking for new ideas for our plane tails, and when we heard the story of Rocky, we thought it entirely befitting that this intrepid little owl is honored on one of our tails,” said Tyri Squyres, vice president of marketing, Frontier Airlines in a press release. “Rocky will be remembered for years to come with her very special story enjoyed by thousands of travelers who fly on ‘Rocky the Owl.’”Rocky will join more than 100 other animals that are featured on tails in the Frontier fleet, the company said.After being rescued from the Christmas tree, Rocky was released back into the wild last month. 975
