The House Judiciary Committee is discussing delaying public testimony from special counsel Robert Mueller one week until July 24 to allow more time for Mueller to testify, according to sources familiar with the matter. The agreement to delay the hearings in exchange for extended testimony is not finalized, the sources said, and lawmakers are still negotiating.Mueller has been scheduled to appear on July 17 before the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees, in back-to-back sessions where 22 members from each committee would get to question the special counsel. But the plan sparked an uproar from members on the Judiciary Committee in both parties over the limited time the special counsel was expected to testify, which 741

The Defense Department announced Tuesday that it had awarded 6 million in contracts to build President Donald Trump's much-sought-after border wall with a completion date for these projects of October 2020.A 9 million contract was awarded to the Texas-based company SLSCO Ltd. for the construction of border wall in Santa Teresa, New Mexico which is located in the El Paso sector of the border.A second 7 million contract was awarded to the Montana-based Barnard Construction Company for work in Yuma, Arizona. The contracts were awarded by the US Army Corps of Engineers.Lt. Col. Jamie Davis, a spokesman for the Department of Defense, told CNN that the El Paso sector contract would include the construction of "30-foot bollard fencing and a five-foot anti-climb plate," and that the Yuma Sector project will feature "18-foot bollard fencing and a five-foot anti-climb plate."A spokesperson for the Army Corps of Engineers told CNN last month that the plan was to install 46 miles at El Paso and 11 miles of fencing at Yuma. CNN has reported that DHS had asked the Pentagon for assistance replacing existing vehicle barriers with pedestrian fencing, as well as light installation in El Paso and Yuma. These are the first border wall contracts to use Pentagon funds that the Trump administration had repurposed from other Defense Department accounts to support the border wall.CNN 1401

The man who authorities say opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, had a ''stone cold look'' when he surrendered, a police official who came face-to-face with him told CNN."It was a look I'd never seen before, and I've been on this force for 31 years," the official said. "I've seen murderers, robbers, nothing like this."Patrick Crusius, 21, of Allen, Texas, has been charged with capital murder in the mass shooting that left 22 people dead and more than two dozen wounded, according to court records. He is being held without bond.Crusuis was arrested Saturday in the Walmart parking lot, where he was sitting in his vehicle after the attack and saw police units responding, a law enforcement official told CNN. He then got out of his vehicle unarmed and walked over to the police vehicles where he was arrested without incident, the official said. While in custody, Crusius has been "cold" in his interactions with police, police officials told CNN.Police Chief Greg Allen told reporters Monday that Crusius has been cooperative, though he's shown no remorse and "appears to be in a state of shock and confusion."Criminal defense attorney Mark Stephens has been appointed by the court to represent Crusius, according to court records. Stephens did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.Suspect wrote a 'manifesto,' police sayCrusius is believed to have authored a racist, anti-immigrant document that laid out a dark vision of America overrun by Hispanic immigrants. With the hate-filled writing, which authorities called a 'manifesto,' were the words: "I'm probably going to die today."The four-page document, titled "The Inconvenient Truth," was published on the online message board 8chan about 20 minutes before the shooting. The writing is filled with white supremacist language and racist hatred aimed at immigrants and Latinos, and the author says he opposes "race mixing" and encourages immigrants to return to their home countries. Some of the language of the manifesto reflects ideas from President Trump, Fox News and the modern Republican party. For example, the document warns of a " 2129

Thanks to Facebook and Instagram's partial outage on Wednesday, users were able to see some of the social networking sites' artificial intelligence at work. Users who visited both sites using a computer browser could see that Facebook and Instagram photos contain basic descriptions of who and what is in a photo (for instance clouds, clothing, people, etc.). In one photo, the A.I. could figure out that a person was wearing a suit. Here is what Facebook's website says about how it processes information in photos: "We are creating visual sensors derived from digital images and videos that extract information about our environment, to further enable Facebook services to automate tasks that people automatically do today visually. Our ultimate goal, to automatically, and intelligently enhance people’s experiences across Facebook products."A request for further comment has been left for Facebook. Facebook's website 933

Tesla is disputing claims by a California man that all three models of the company’s cars can suddenly speed up on their own without the driver touching the accelerator pedal.Tesla said Monday it checks when drivers report that their car accelerated on its own, and in every case where the company has the car’s data, it drove as designed. The company also claimed the man who filed a petition with federal safety officials is a short-seller of Tesla shares, referring to investors who borrow shares in a company’s stock and try to profit by replacing them after the share price falls. On Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it would look into a petition filed by Brian Sparks of Berkeley, California, and decide whether to open a formal investigation. Sparks’ allegations cover about 500,000 Teslas, including Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles in model years 2013 through 2019.Sparks said Tesla owners have lodged 127 complaints with the government, covering 110 crashes and 52 injuries.Tesla, which did not respond when asked for comment on Friday, posted a statement Monday saying its electric vehicles do not accelerate on their own.The company called the petition “completely false,” adding that “the car accelerates if, and only if, the driver told it to do so, and it slows or stops when the driver applies the brake.”Sparks said in his 69-page petition that many of the Tesla accidents happened during parking, that the complaint rate was much higher than for other vehicles, and that Tesla refused to share the car’s data with owners after incidents. The highway agency has yet to verify the complaints. The people who filed complaints were not identified in NHTSA’s database. 1726
