Pedro Rios says the idea that immigrants are coming to this country solely to be a burden to the United States is absolutely false. Rios is the Executive Director of American Friends Service Committee – a national organization that has worked on immigration and border issues for 42 years. He says he is against a new rule that disqualifies immigrants from a green card if they use certain government benefits, because he says it's causing people to drop out of benefit services they do qualify for. “In this case, prenatal care is not a targeted benefit. However, someone might decide to stop receiving that care simply because they fear that it would place them at the crosshairs of some sort of immigration enforcement operation,” Rios said. Dulce Garcia, an immigration attorney and DACA recipient, agrees with Rios. She says the rule has a two-fold impact: it denies more people the ability to qualify as a legal permanent resident, and now people are afraid of accessing other public benefits. She knows from personal experience when her family had to live inside a car and with very little food. “We’re going to see more people like my parents who were afraid of accessing public benefits and decided to risk our health essentially by remaining unsheltered and by struggling with food,” Garcia said. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a food program that's among those included in the rule. If immigrants collect those benefits more than 12 months in three years, they can't get a green card - and become a permanent resident. “We all fall on hard times. My family fell on hard times, and I wish that we would have had people telling us ‘it’s OK, it’s OK to receive help’ so that we would be safe.” As the executive director of Border Angels, a nonprofit that advocates for the immigrant community, Garcia says she tries to empower immigrants with accurate information so they know what benefits they’re still eligible for. However, there are people in favor of the rule, like Agnes Gibboney, who was born in Hungary. Her family entered the U.S. in 1970. “When we immigrated to the U.S., my parents had to sign a document stating they would not apply for any public assistance. That my father could support my mother, my brother and myself,” Gibboney said. Gibboney says she doesn't like the idea of immigrants using taxpayer dollars for services. “The importance of being fully vetted is for the government to know who is coming into this country. To make sure you are of good moral standing, to make sure you’re going to be a good citizen, and make sure that you’re gonna be a plus to this country,” Gibboney said. When it announced the new rule, the Department of Homeland Security called self-sufficiency a core American value. On the other hand, Rios says public benefits might be necessary in order for some immigrants to eventually become self-sufficient.“What we’ve seen in the past is when their needs aren’t being met, then it’s harder for them to support themselves in other ways,” Rios said. 3052
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - With intricate, meticulous designs, one look and you’d think Newport News resident Karen Freidt has been baking for years."I've never cooked this much in my whole life," she stated.The recent NASA retiree turned pie sculpture, is turning heads with her new and very detailed hobby. She says the calling to create came to her in a dream."Something woke me up and it was like September 3rd, on your way home, out of your name into your color," she described. So Karen says she wrote down the dream in her phone. "One one of the things I thought about is how can I help others with my art ," said Freidt.After battling pneumonia and being confined to her home during COVID-19 she whipped up a few the tasty treats and posted the edible art on Facebook."The first two pies I posted on Facbeook went viral within a couple days," she said. Within a few days her creative crusts grabbed the attention of Anna Sui, one of New York City's most recognized fashion designers."First thing I said, was how can I confirm this is really you," she stated. "I found out she wanted to use the pies in New York Spring Fashion Week."It took Freidt more than 15 hours to make the pie fashions now garnering national attention."She used the pies prominently in her media, I was shocked," she said. But Freidt hasn't forgotten those here at home. INDIANAPOLIS — A new drug from Eli Lilly and Company to help hospitalized COVID-19 patients requiring oxygen has received emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.Barivitinib, which is used in combination with remdesivir, can be given to both adult and pediatric patients two years old and older who are suspected to have or have a confirmed case of COVID-19 and need supplemental oxygen, invasive mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. "Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lilly has been committed to finding potential treatments to help people around the world who've been impacted by this virus," David A. Ricks, Lilly chairman and CEO, said in a press release. "Today's FDA action for baricitinib marks the second Lilly therapy to be granted an EUA, in addition to the recent neutralizing antibody EUA for high-risk non-hospitalized patients, increasing the number of treatment options for COVID-19 patients at different stages of the disease. This is an important milestone for hospitalized patients on oxygen, as baricitinib may help speed their recovery."Patients treated with the drug in combination with remdesivir had a "significant reduction in median time to recovery," according to the press release.Baricitinib has not been approved by the FDA to treat COVID-19 and studies are still underway in clinical trials, according to the press release.Eli Lilly and Company is working with healthcare systems and governments to facilitate patient access to the drug."With respect to supply, Lilly remains confident in being able to meet the needs of patients under the EUA in the U.S., as well as for existing approved indications around the world," the press release read. CHICAGO – This past May, Harrisburg University won ESPN’s inaugural College Esports Championship. In 2018, the college became the first to award full-ride scholarships to its entire 16-player roster. With gaming programs expanding and an estimated million in esport scholarships up for grabs, elite players are finding themselves in high demand. Just ask 16-year-old Elgin, Illinois high school junior Jonathan Huffman. He’s been playing online since he was 13 and regularly spends hours at his bedroom gaming station. When asked how good a player he really is, Huffman wryly responds. “Very good. I don’t really say it too much but I’m one of the best in the world I would think,” he said. In fact, Huffman is so good he needs a live camera trained on his hands during gameplay streaming to prove to others he’s not hacking the system. “Whenever people accuse me, they just look at the hand-cam and it kind of fixes the issue,” he said. Huffman’s game of choice is Overwatch. Online he’s known as “MyCrazyCatOW.”He regularly ranks among the top 50 competitive players in the world. As a result, colleges and universities are clamoring to recruit players like him. “To give an analogy – like in professional basketball he’s up there in the echelons of the Steph Currys, the Lebron Jameses of the world,” explained Alan Gadbois. “We found out our house was totally leveled. I couldn’t find one piece of a 2 by 4 left,” recalls Ed Anderson, a wildfire survivor. In 2012, the Waldo Canyon fire ripped through Ed Anderson’s house in Colorado Springs, Colorado. There was nothing left, and Anderson and his wife just barely escaped. “We collected up a few more things, got in my pickup, collected up the cat, and we took off," he says. "And the fire at that time was coming over the mountain rolling like a tornado. And it hit our house, they said, about 15 to 20 minutes after we evacuated." His home was one out of more than 300 destroyed in that fire. He decided to rebuild on the same exact spot. It’s what many people do. “If it burns, we rebuild it, we fight back, and it’s a very human thing to do,” says Brian Buma, a professor at CU Denver. Buma is trying to get people to think differently about fires, especially because he says there will be more of them. “The problem is, we have an ecosystem that is highly flammable, many years, and we have a lot of people living in it. That’s compounded by the fact that the climate is warming up, things are getting dryer, things are getting more flammable,” says Buma. Buma says climate change is creating conditions that will end in more wildfires. He and other researchers published a study outlining how communities can be more proactive with how they get ready for fires. “Maybe we need to rethink how we deal with fire and be more accepting of prescribed fires, for example, be more accepting of smoke when foresters in the forest service are clearing out the underbrush every year, more accepting of the fact there won’t be trees everywhere on these hills,” he explains. The trees that surround Anderson’s home are still scorched and barren from that fire more than seven years ago. He says watching his home burn was hard, but he still had the most important thing. “Your life is what’s important, not the material things that you have lost,” Anderson says. That’s not how things played out last year in California. “The fires in California, last year, were really indicative of the challenges we are going to face moving forward into the future,” Buma says. The most infamous, the Camp Fire, killed more than 80 people. “The fuel is building up, the tinder is building up, it’s getting warmer, it’s getting dryer," Buma says. "To me, as a scientist, what that says is we need to make some clear-eyed decisions about how we’re going to deal with this new reality. We know more of these things are coming, it’s simply a question of how we choose to deal with them." Buma’s study shows communities can plan better to prevent wildfires from destroying homes. “They can do things to mitigate that risk. They can put parking lots on the outside of their community, or ball fields on the outside of their community, to provide a large fire break integrated into their community planning,” he says. He thinks these types of communities will be better prepared, more resilient to flames, and hopefully won’t have to rebuild like Anderson did. 3082
