SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The boy who was critically injured in a crash in San Ysidro joined his parents Friday outside the courthouse where the alleged driver is on trial.Prosecutors said Constantino Banda Acosta, an undocumented immigrant, was drunk May 6 when he hit the Lake family on their way home from Disneyland.Lennox Lake was hospitalized for 18 days with multiple skull fractures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The "Idaho River" has dried up.Repairs to a water transmission line in North Park are nearly complete, days after thousands of gallons of water flooded the neighborhood.Crews were out Friday replacing the broken 90-year-old, cast-iron pipe with a new PVC pipe and repaving the large hole formed at the intersection of Idaho Street and Polk Avenue.A portion of the road over the pipe's location Saturday morning remained closed off for crews to complete spot paving and cleanup.NORTH PARK WATER MAIN BREAK: 542

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Drug Enforcement Agency launched a summer project drilling down on factors leading to violent crime across the nation. It is called Project Safeguard.Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego district, John Callery, said, "over 75% of those [violent] crimes are driven to get money to buy drugs."He said drugs and crime go hand in hand. "When a person devolves into a drug addict unfortunately they become very desperate right? And a desperate person will do desperate things to get money and buy drugs."Callery said his team geared up to knock out 15 cases with violent criminals. The arrests happened from August to October."We took a three month, for lack of a better word, a surge. Let’s get violent actors off the street. Let’s arrest them, DEA, and let’s charge them federally." Callery said they arrested 34 criminals.He added they have a lot of evidence to go through as well, "we’ve seized 71 firearms and... seized 160 kilograms of heroin and 160 kilograms of fentanyl."He hopes the arrests lead to hundreds more and reveal kingpins in the Mexican Drug Cartels."We’re a border town and we have a huge responsibility here to try and stop drugs from entering the United States because 75% of all drugs enter right here in our area and go to the rest of the United States." Callery said he is incredibly proud of his teamHe said five agents were infected with the novel coronavirus since March and have recovered. He said they haven't stopped working through the pandemic.Callery said his next big task is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24th. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough on kids, as they have been stuck at home for school and for play. However, a second-grader from the College Area is putting his time to good use. Seven-year-old Max Kelley came up with an idea to help feed those in need. Max and his younger sister Lucy were playing out in the backyard when he approached his mom with an idea of wanting to start a business."He wanted to do a water recycling business," says his mom Lauren. "So we went around collecting water bottles and cans. We went around to high schools, the bay, and the beach. Every week, we would return it to the recycling center, and we would get the money."And while some kids might take the money to buy something for themselves, Max wanted to do something completely different, and completely unselfish. His first thought was to think of others, and how the money might benefit somebody else."I realized that there are people in need," says Max. "And need food and water." His mother wasn't surprised at all, describing her son as very caring."He came up with the idea himself, and that was to donate the money to a local food bank," Lauren said.So the day before Thanksgiving, Max, Lucy, and the family donated their collection of 8.43 to the Special Delivery Food Bank in Mission Hills. "My family and the kids all got a standing ovation from all the patrons that were there," says Lauren.One check has been delivered, but Max is definitely not finished giving to those in need. As he and Lucy have plans to raise even more money for the food bank. "It made me feel happy," Max said. 1616
