IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. –  A former United States border patrol agent says he nearly lost his arm in 2010 after training in Silver Strand Waters in southern California.Joshua Willey says he contracted flesh-eating bacteria.“I just remember my arm was extremely swollen like I wanna say the size of a volleyball maybe, “ Willey said. “My family and I were told that I might have to have my arm amputated and that was hard to hear.”Willey joined the group, “Citizens against Sewage” Friday afternoon to demand action against the ongoing problem.President Trump is scheduled to visit San Diego next week to look at the border wall prototypes, and the group wants him to take a tour of the Tijuana River Valley and view the extensive sewage issues."Citizens against Sewage" also called for the commissioner of the U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) to resign or be reassigned for what they claim is a lack of action on the matter:IBWC sent the following statement to Scripps station KGTV in San Diego:"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Agent and his family. We have successfully pressed Mexico into taking emergency actions and that as a result fugitive illicit discharges are being intercepted.Mexico has told us and we are verifying that they are indeed taking steps to stop sewage from crossing the border. Commissioner Drusina will work until otherwise notified by the Administration." 1452

If you receive a call from an unfamiliar number informing you that you've missed jury duty and could be sent to jail if you don't pay a fine, be wary. The call could be a hoax. The scam has claimed a number of victims in the Baltimore area.At least one caller identified himself as a Lieutenant Steven Harris with the Baltimore County Sheriff's office. “They claimed that I had failed to show up, obey a summons in a criminal case, and that the judge had issued a bench warrant for my arrest. And they wanted me to come in right away and straighten it out or they would have to come get me,” said Professor Rena Steinzor who teaches at the University of Maryland Carey Law School. The caller gave the address of the Towson courthouse and instructed her to meet him there with money in hand.“He wanted ,868 in fines for my failure to appear and said I would get the money right back,” said Steinzor. When she explained she couldn't get down to her bank in Capitol Hill and back before the courthouse closed, he told her to purchase a MoneyPak from a CVS or office supply store. The form of payment was a red flag that alerted Steinzor to the fraud.“I think it's stupid to target somebody who's familiar with the criminal justice system and knows that you don't go to CVS and put money on a card if you have to pay a fine in court,” Steinzor said.A co-worker then called the Sheriff's Office who told her it was a trick.Steinzor didn't pay but there are many potential victims. The scheme stretches into areas around the state.Harford, Howard, Cecil, and Frederick counties have all reported similar scams recently. In Frederick County the caller gave the name of a police officer who is actively on the force. They convinced a victim to stay on the phone. The scammer didn't have an accent, they provided real addresses, and they threatened the victim with arrest.“I think the threat that they're going to come and get you is very disconcerting. I mean, I will tell you, I made it all the way to my car,” said Steinzor. The Baltimore County Sheriff said the fraudsster was after the code on the MoneyPak. He would've asked for the code and never appeared at the courthouse. They also said the person in question may be from another country. When police went to investigate, the number Steinzor provided was disconnected.Steinzor wanted to share her story because the scam can be very believable. When she initially called the number, the voicemail made it seem like it was the Sheriff's Office. They also knew where she worked. If you get one of these calls and you're not sure, police advise you to hang up and call the agency's official number on their website to verify. You could be fined or face jail time for failing to appear for jury service, however, courts do not call people to notify them about a bench warrant, nor do they instruct them to bring a “bond voucher” with them to the court. For more information on the scam, click here.  2992

IKEA is ending the publication of its iconic catalog after 70 years. The Swedish retailer cited the reason for ending it was due to consumers shopping online.IKEA said last year, their online retail sales increased by 45% worldwide, and they saw 4 billion users on its website."For both customers and co-workers, the IKEA Catalog is a publication that brings a lot of emotions, memories, and joy. For 70 years, it has been one of our most unique and iconic products, which has inspired billions of people across the world," said Konrad Grüss, Managing Director, Inter IKEA Systems B.V in a press release. "Turning the page with our beloved catalog is, in fact, a natural process since media consumption and customer behaviors have changed. To reach and interact with many people, we will keep inspiring with our home furnishing solutions in new ways."IKEA said they are transforming as a company and will focus more on "being more digital and accessible" by improving their digital services and launching new apps.“We are not starting from scratch. We have been transforming many aspects of how to reach and interact with our customers, and the work continues to find new ways to amplify unique IKEA home furnishing knowledge, products, and solutions in the best possible way - to inspire the many people through new ways, channels, and formats,” said Grüss.The company first released its catalog in 1951 in Sweden. At its peak in 2016, IKEA distributed 200 million copies in 69 different versions and 32 languages. In fall 2021, the company said a book would be released that'll be filled with "great home furnishing inspiration and knowledge." 1651

In a pandemic that relies heavily on the expertise and passion of our healthcare workers, we have seen many doctors and nurses working longer hours and even risking their own health to care for those in need.“This is a pandemic that's going to continue to go on. And a lot of health care providers in different settings have already been asked to work overtime shifts or extra shifts. And the thing is, that’s just increasing the burnout,” said Dr. Jessica Rainbow, RN and UArizona College of Nursing assistant professor.“Before the pandemic burnout was already a normalized issue in Nursing. And what I mean by that is that more nurses than not experienced burnout than those who have what I would call good well-being and don't suffer from burnout,” said Chloe Littzen, RN and UArizona College of Nursing Ph.D. candidate.Rainbow and Littzen are seeking ways to mitigate nurse burnout during the coronavirus pandemic. They say the pandemic has only intensified the problem.“They either leave the setting that they're in. Let's say they're in one unit, they go to another unit. They leave that facility going from, let's say, the hospital setting to the community setting or vice versa, or they leave nursing completely,” said Littzen. That puts the industry in a tough spot. The nursing shortage also affects the ability to educate future nurses and the ability to do more research.“It's important to say that this is not an issue that is the nurse's fault right or any healthcare provider or anyone who works in a healthcare setting,” said Rainbow. From their research, they say health care workers are shown to have good self-care, but it’s the systems of the work environment that can be stressful.“Where they're actually given the resources that they need to be successful. So resources as far as things like PPE, things like having adequate staffing,” said Rainbow. They say a big factor is also the public. Loved ones of those in care can help by being understanding and by adhering to guidelines, such as wearing a mask.“You know, it's important to give grace and struggling times and everyone's emotions are heightened and stressed and you know nurses are people, too. They're also a human being and they're also suffering with you,” said Littzen. They found nurses have done things like meditation, spending more time in nature, and seeking peer groups to voice shared experiences.“Social support is huge for nurses. I mean, especially to when you were a provider and you have a job where your significant other at home may not fully understand what you do. And so it's difficult sometimes if you don't have the social support of other co-workers in the same position,” said Rainbow.Rainbow’s study is called “Working in Healthcare During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Participants can access the consent form with study information online or contact her for more information. Littzen’s dissertation study is called “Young Adult Nurse Work-Related Well-being, Contemporary Practice Worldview, Resilience, and Co-Worker Support.”This story was first reported by Taja Davis at KGUN in Tucson, Arizona. 3106

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Early Sunday morning, 63,000 gallons of sewage spilled into Tijuana River. A representative with U.S. Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission tells 10News the spill came from the potable water Planetary Aquaduct around 4:30 am. They say Pump Station CILA was unable to divert water from this event and a trans-boundary flow of approximately 63,000 gallons occurred at around 4:30 am. The transboundary flow contained treated and untreated wastewater in addition to storm water runoff and groundwater that has made its way to the Tijuana River. Pump Station continues to operate and no transboundary flows are currently present. 686
