The Senate Finance Committee put big pharmaceutical companies on blast for their sky-high drug prices. Seven drug executives were grilled in a heated exchange with lawmakers, who were questioning their pricing practices. Pharmaceutical company Pfizer has raised the price of the popular diabetes drug Lyrica by 163 percent since 2012. Each of the pharmaceutical companies insisted the high costs is because it takes a lot of money to research and develop better more effective drugs. The Senate committee did not agree. The Big Pharma panel did offer ideas to find solutions to lower drug prices, including passing rebates. Additionally, Merck, as well as the majority of the panel, say they support the stop of price hikes on medicines that have no competition and encourages competition elsewhere. However, Senate members like Maria Cantwell of Washington, say Big Pharma says it wants to solve the issue, but ultimately didn't offer anything worthy to create change. A container of screws that fell off a vehicle and littered the roadway in Jackson County, Mississippi, caused flat tires along nearly 30 miles of interstate.Mississippi Highway Patrol responded Tuesday after getting numerous calls about stranded motorists near the Pascagoula River Bridge. When officers arrived, they discovered sheet metal screws scattered across Interstate 10 West. In total, 36 passenger cars and three semis each had multiple flat tires."Wrecker response time was upwards to three hours for [motorists] waiting on tow trucks due to the number of calls for service," the Mississippi Highway Patrol said in a statement."Troopers assisted [motorists] with changing flat tires and providing lane safety" for those who were stranded.Courtney Beauvais was on her way home to Ocean Springs when she noticed that she had a flat. Her car was equipped with run-flat tires, designed to resist deflation when punctured, so she was able to exit the highway and make it home."I noticed the car wobble a little bit when I exited," she said. "When I got home, I noticed screws in the side wall and in the bottom of the front tire."She now has to get a new tire for her car."I didn't think anything of it when I got the flat tire," she said. "Once I saw the pictures on Facebook when I got home, I was like, 'oh, my goodness.' "Luckily, the flat tires didn't cause any wrecks. A judge has upheld the Virginia governor's ban on all types of weapons at a pro-gun rally planned for next week. Gov. Ralph Northam had announced the ban on Wednesday as he declared a state of emergency over threats of “armed militia groups storming our Capitol." The judge's order Thursday came hours after the FBI announced the arrest of three alleged white supremacists in Maryland. Virginia's solicitor general told Richmond Circuit Court Judge Joi that law enforcement identified "credible evidence" that armed out-of-state groups planned to come to Virginia with the possible intention of participating in a "violent insurrection." The emergency, which was declared by executive order, will span Friday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. until Tuesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m.“Law enforcement intelligence analysts have identified credible threats of violence surrounding the event, along with white nationalist rhetoric and plans by out-of-state militia groups to attend,” said a statement from Northam’s office.Northam tweeted that the order was to protect citizens and lawmakers.“We support citizens’ rights to peacefully protest and express their views to their elected officials.
