SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - An East County family is channeling their pain into helping domestic violence survivors in San Diego. The family's loved one, 19-year-old Kiera Bergman, was murdered last year in Arizona. ”What helps us is being able to help other people and we want her story and her memory to stay alive and that’s why we’re choosing to do donation drives, because we want to be able to help people that are in the same situation she was in," said Mindy Tarantino, Kiera's aunt. Investigators believe Bergman's boyfriend, Jon Clark, is responsible for her death. Clark faces first-degree murder charges and is set to stand trial in a few months. “I'll look at pictures that I have of her and then all of a sudden you just get overwhelmed, I get anxiety really quick, and it just really hits me that she’s gone," said Kiera's grandmother, Sandie Bergman. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A grandfather accused in the fatal fall of his young granddaughter from an 11th-story window of a cruise ship docked in Puerto Rico last year has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide.Salvatore Anello of Valparaiso, Indiana, earlier said he would drop a not-guilty plea to help end what he called “this nightmare" for his family.Chloe Wiegand, an 18-month-old, slipped from Anello’s grasp and fell about 150 feet from an open window of Royal Caribbean Cruises’ Freedom of the Seas ship in July 2019.Anello, 51, has repeatedly said he is colorblind and did not know the window in the children's play area was open when he lifted Chloe up so she could bang on the glass, WRTV reports.Chloe's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Royal Caribbean Cruises in December 2019, claiming the company violated industry standards by failing to provide reasonably safe windows in an area where children play on the ship.In response, Royal Caribbean filed court documents alleging that Anello was “unquestionably aware” that the window was open because video shows him leaning out of it right before he picked Chloe up and dangled her from it.The documents filed by Royal Caribbean claim Anello's actions were captured on two separate video surveillance cameras, which were previously unreleased. Security experts are clarifying what you should know about the hack against the U.S.Last week, federal authorities warned of the breach in government and private computer systems. It's suspected that Russian attackers were behind it.Some members of Congress have voiced concerns that taxpayers' information could be exposed through the treasury department. But one expert tells us that isn't really valuable to these attackers.“The breach over the last week is much more geared towards nation state secrets, manufacturing secrets, supply chain secrets, you know different intellectual property, than it is personal information,” said Randy Watkins, Chief Technology Officer at CriticalStart.Watkins says the average person likely won't see any immediate impact, but with policy information and military strategies at risk, there could be downstream ramifications.Federal authorities say the hackers primarily got in through software called solar winds that some agencies use.Watkins says that means we need to look more at how we measure security for third party vendors.“A lot of times, the attackers don't need to go directly after the treasury department or the department of defense. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man deputies say was under the influence was arrested Saturday evening after crashing into a patrol car and causing a second crash while fleeing law enforcement. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies tried to make contact with an intoxicated man in the parking lot on the 400 block of Autumn Drive in San Marcos around 4:49 p.m.The driver, Cristian Reinoso, 24, failed to obey instructions, instead backing into an unoccupied patrol vehicle twice, deputies say. According to the department, Reinoso then drove away from the parking lot, striking a fence and a parked car before running a red light and crashing into another vehicle at the intersection of Los Vallecitos Boulevard and Knoll Road. The crash reportedly caused Reinoso’s vehicle to roll over, so deputies say he got out and ran away before being arrested at an apartment complex on the 200 block of Knoll Road. Both Reinoso and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. The department says Reinoso will be charged with assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run causing injuries. 1167
