Facebook has come under fire for a "barbaric use of technology" that allowed the sale of a child bride to be held on its site.An auction was held on the social media platform for a 16-year-old girl in South Sudan which sought payment for her hand in marriage.Facebook said the post was taken down as soon as the company learned of it, but that wasn't until after the girl was married.According to children's rights organization Plan International, the girl was bid on by five men, some of whom were reportedly high-ranking South Sudanese government officials.Activists are concerned that this auction -- for which the father reportedly received 500 cows, three cars and ,000 in exchange for his daughter -- could inspire other families to use social media sites to receive larger payments.Plan International's country director in South Sudan, George Otim, said: "That a girl could be sold for marriage on the world's biggest social networking site in this day and age is beyond belief."He added: "This barbaric use of technology is reminiscent of latter-day slave markets." 1084

(KGTV) - A woman died from her injuries after being hit by a driver at an Encinitas intersection Friday.The 61-year-old victim was walking in a crosswalk at Encinitas Boulevard and Balour Drive just after 6 p.m., San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said.SDSO said a vehicle approached the intersection while the woman was crossing and stopped to allow her to pass. A second vehicle then approached the intersection and drove around the first vehicle to continue through the intersection, knocking the woman down.She was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital - La Jolla with life-threatening injuries. She later died from those injuries. The woman's name has not been released.The driver charged with hitting the woman remained at the scene. SDSO said alcohol does not appear to be a factor. 831

European scientists say they have caught a rare fish they describe as a "living fossil."According to the BBC, scientists for the European Union's Institute for Sea and Atmosphere captured a 5-foot long frilled shark in the waters off the coast of southern Portugal.Frilled sharks are rarely seen by humans, and typically live thousands of feet below the ocean's surface. This particular shark was caught at a depth of 2,300 feet.According to Fox News, there have only been three recorded sightings of frilled sharks in the past 10 years.
