(AP) — Kanye West's petition to appear on New Jersey's ballot as a presidential candidate fails to pass legal muster because signatures are incomplete, and in some cases appear written in the same hand. That's according to a formal complaint filed with the state on Wednesday by election law attorney Scott Salmon. Salmon, a Democrat, filed the objection with the state Division of Elections after reviewing the more than 1,300 signatures West submitted. New Jersey requires presidential candidates to get 800 signatures to appear on the ballot, but Salmon says he counted more than 600 that were in some way defective. The petition shows that a number of signatures appear written by the same hand, including lower-case i's dotted with a small circle. 774

VERMILION PARISH, La. – A Louisiana sheriff’s office asked anyone who didn’t evacuate for Hurricane Laura to write their identity down, put it in a plastic bag and place it in their pocket. The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office made the request in a Facebook post on Wednesday, before the hurricane pummeled the state as a Category 4 storm.“Please evacuate and if you choose to stay and we can’t get to you, write your name, address, social security number and next of kin and put it a Ziplock bag in your pocket,” wrote officials. “Praying that it does not come to this!”The office said those who chose to stay and face the dangerous storm should understand that rescue efforts won’t begin until after the hurricane and storm surge has passed and it is safe.“Expecting the worse but praying for the best,” wrote the office.A mandatory evacuation was ordered for the parish, which is located along the Gulf Coast, south of Lafayette. A curfew has also been put in place for the community until further notice.The hurricane made landfall along the border of Louisiana and Texas at about 1 a.m. CDT on Thursday. It had maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. That makes it the most powerful hurricane to strike the U.S. so far this year.As of Thursday morning, at least one person has died as a result of the storm. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said a 14-year-old girl died when a tree fell on her home.The storm is continuing to make its way through Louisiana and into Arkansas, weakening as it goes, but strong winds and flooding still pose a threat. Update, Tuesday morning: A social media post indicates Dan was welcomed back to his position.ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - Escondido neighbors outraged after their favorite city worker was fired Friday, rallied to get him his job back.Sunday night a small group gathered at Escondido City Hall to tell 10News why they believe it was wrong Dan Naylor was fired.Naylor is known in the community as their ambassador, fondly called "Dan the Man" for his work in public service. He picked up trash along Grand Avenue for years and was hired by the city to clean up Grape Park in 2017, he would have celebrated his first work anniversary in November.Naylor was also recognized by Mayor Sam Abed for his work.Naylor is not an average city worker. He was hit by a car when he was 7-years-old, while living in Oceanside. "I died for 10 minutes, three times... God told me to do the best that I can and be the best that I can," he said.Since then, he's had trouble speaking and limited mobility on his left side.Friday Dan said he was brought into his boss's office and told he was being fired for wearing his uniform while drinking a beer at Vinz after work a few weeks prior. Patti Thompson, a friend and self appointed advocate for Dan, started asking questions, "I got my questions answered by people within the City, so I checked my facts by people that are credible that work in the City office... Vaping among America's teenagers continues to climb, while the use of other substances — such as alcohol and opioids — has declined in recent years, according to a new report.Monday's report, called Monitoring the Future, comes from the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research and is based on an annual survey of drug and alcohol use and attitudes among eighth-, 10th- and 12th-graders in the United States. This year's survey included 44,482 students from 392 public and private schools across the country.Behind drinking alcohol, vaping was the second-most common form of substance use, the study showed, with 17.6% of eighth-graders, 32.3% of 10th-graders and 37.3% of 12th-graders reporting vaping in the past year. Last year, the annual survey found that prevalence of vaping was 13.3% among eighth-graders, 23.9% among 10th-graders and 27.8% among 12th-graders.Vaping involves using an electronic cigarette, hookah or similar device to inhale certain vapors or aerosols, which could contain substances such as nicotine, marijuana or flavoring."What we are seeing is a change in the patterns of drug taking among teenagers in that they are the lowest that we've seen for many years," said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which funded the report."So we have very good news," she said, "but at the same time, we have to be vigilant, because of this very high uptake and embracing of vaping by teenagers that could lead them then to the administration of other drugs." 1543
