BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Tuesday China would not change the orientation of its stimulating economic policy as the country is at a critical stage in the recovery of the economy. Wen said, when meeting with World Bank President Robert Zoellick, that China's government would continue to pursue proactive fiscal and moderately easy monetary policies.     "We will not change the orientation of our policy," Wen said.     Wen said China would fully implement and continue to enhance and perfect policy in response to the international financial crisis to achieve the goals of economic and social development. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) meets with World Bank President Robert Zoellick in Beijing on Sept. 1, 2009.    China's economy grew 7.1 percent in the first half of this year and 7.9 percent in the second quarter, reversing a declining trend in the previous seven quarters.     World Bank President Zoellick said earlier China's economic recovery might be better than expected.     In the first seven months of this year, China has seen a robust growth of domestic demand as consumption surged 15.2 percent year on year and investment 32.9 percent. The Ministry of Commerce predicts China's exports will slow their decline or even grow on a monthly basis.     "The macro-economic policy and measures that China adopted in response to the international financial crisis have been proved inconformity with reality, prompt, forceful and effective," Wen said.     Wen said the world economy was now showing signs of stabilizing, but an all-round recovery would be a slow, difficult and complicated process. It would require long-term, concerted efforts by every country in the world in strengthening dialogue, coordinating policy and deepening cooperation.     Wen said imbalances in the global economy were rooted in disparity in development. He urged the international community to pay special attention to difficulties faced by developing countries, especially the least developed ones. He said the gap should be lessened by increasing aid, writing off debts, opening markets and transferring technology.     Wen said China was ready to strengthen cooperation with the World Bank and make new contributions to achieving the UN Millennium Goals and sustainable development of the world.     This is the third time Zoellick has visited China since becoming World Bank President. Following his arrival Monday afternoon, Zoellick exchanged views on the major topics of his agenda in Beijing, the international financial crisis and climate change, with Chinese officials. Besides Beijing, Zoellick will visit Anhui province in east China.     Zoellick said the World Bank was willing to develop cooperation with China in areas such as international development aid, reform of international financial organizations and climate change.

URUMQI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of foreign diplomats in China on Thursday visited Shihezi city in northwest China' s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, voicing their appreciation to the development model of the city.     Shihezi city, some 150 km northwest of Urumqi, is a young city which was established in the 1950s in the gobi of Xinjiang. With the development of some 60 years, the city has become one of the most developed cities in the autonomous region.     In the early phase of the city' s development, Shihezi focused on reclaiming land in the desert for agriculture. Meanwhile, the city began to establish its industry system and high-tech in recent years in order to reach a comprehensive development. BEIJING, July 28 -- China expressed its hope that the U.S. government will be able to cut its budget deficit in order to prevent inflation that could jeopardize the value of China's dollar-denominated assets, as the two countries wrapped up the first of two days of high-level talks here.     "We sincerely hope the U.S. fiscal deficit would be reduced, year after year," Zhu Guangyao, assistant minister of finance, told reporters after the conclusion of the first day of talks, which have been dubbed the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue.     "The Chinese government is responsible and first and foremost our responsibility is [for] the Chinese people, so of course we are concerned about the security of the Chinese [dollar] assets," Zhu said.     China holds a total of more than 800 billion U.S. dollars in U.S. treasury debt, making it America's largest foreign creditor.     As a result of recent American efforts to counter the financial crisis and stimulate the economy, U.S. government spending has soared, and is projected to reach 1.84 trillion U.S. dollars this year. That is more than four times the previous high.     Many investors and economists fear this deficit spending will lead to inflation, as the increase in the supply of dollars drives down their value, thereby also reducing the value all dollar-denominated assets, including U.S. Treasury bonds. As a result, some investors have started to buy shorter-term bonds, which they hope will not be impacted by any longer-term inflation driven by increased government spending.     U.S. Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner assured the Chinese delegation in his opening remark on Monday that U.S. has taken steps to overhaul its financial system, enhance regulation, and control the deficit.     "We are committed to taking measures to maintain greater savings and to reducing the federal deficit to a sustainable level by 2013," he said. However, Geithner did not reveal how, specifically, the United States planned to achieve its deficit-cutting goals during the dialogue.    Both American and Chinese officials, however, agreed that the economy has begun to slowly stabilize.     "We have agreed that green shoots have emerged in the international economy and financial markets," said Zhu. However, the economic foundation is far from being sound, and the current situation remains severe, Zhu warned.     China's economy has shown solid signs of recovery, with its GDP growth picking up to 7.1 percent in the first half of this year after dipping to as low as 6.1 percent in the first quarter. The country's retail sales growth was 15 percent in the first half of this year, the highest since 1985, according to Ministry of Finance figures.     The two-day talks, which are co-chaired on the Chinese side by Vice Premier Wang Qishan and State Councilor Dai Bingguo, and the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner on the U.S. side, covered a wide array of issues, including the global economy, climate change and clean energy as well as regional security issues.     At the opening ceremony on Monday, U.S. President Barack Obama emphasized his hope for closer cooperation between the two countries.     "I believe that we are poised to make steady progress on some of the most important issues of our times," he said. "The relationship between the United States and China will shape the 21st century."

BRUSSELS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met Thursday with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on bilateral ties, vowing to enhance cooperation between the two sides.     Xi, who congratulated Barroso for his reelection, said China appreciated his efforts in the past five years on boosting development of the comprehensive and strategic partnership between China and the European Union. China believes, too, that the bilateral ties would advance further in a healthy and stable way within the new term of Barroso, Xi said.     Xi said China and the EU, who have formed a pattern of comprehensive, wide-range and multilevel cooperation, have become two important forces to help shape the future international structure into a multipolar world.     Xi put forward a three-point proposal to further strengthen bilateral relations between China and the EU. It will also be important to bear in mind the overall interests of bilateral relations and respect each other's major concerns, Xi said.     China is ready to work with the EU to build Sino-EU relations into a model of peaceful coexistence and friendly exchanges between countries that transcend civilizations, social systems and development models, Xi said.     Barroso offered congratulations on the success of China's impressive National Day celebrations on October 1, speaking highly of the great achievements of China in the last 60 years.     Sino-EU relations have seen remarkable achievements, he said, adding that the past five years have witnessed frequent top-level exchanges, fruitful personnel and cultural exchanges, and rapid development of economic and trade cooperation.     China and the EU have seen increasing common ground on global issues, including the international financial crisis and climate change, and both sides oppose protectionism and champion a just international order, Barroso said.     In the next five years, the EU will continue developing and promoting the EU and China's comprehensive and strategic partnership and strive to handle disagreements in a mature and responsible spirit so as to further develop bilateral ties, he said.     Barroso also wished the forthcoming Europalia Chinese Art Festival a great success.     Xi arrived here Wednesday for an official visit to Belgium, the first leg of his five-nation European tour. BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods totaled 570 billion yuan (about 83.5 billion U.S. dollars) during the National Day holiday, with average daily sales up 18 percent compared with the same period of last year, the Ministry of Commerce said Friday.     Sales of household appliances soared during the eight-day holiday which started from Oct. 1. Among them, high-definition flat screen TV sets, digital cameras, side-by-side refrigerators and 3G mobile phones are consumers' favorites. In the case of Kaiyuan Mall in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, sales of household appliances gained by 34.7 percent year on year. Customers are seen at a shopping mall in Shanghai, east China, Oct. 8, 2009    Jewelry and cars became hot sellers as well. The sales of jewelry of Caishikou Department Store in Beijing topped 100 million yuan, up 30 percent year on year. Car sales of major car-selling companies in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality increased by 71.7 percent year on year.     The selling boom in the home appliance and car sectors was partly stimulated by a policy approved by the State Council in June this year, aiming to spur domestic consumption by subsidizing buyers of cars and household appliances, according to the ministry.     For example, consumers can first sell their old household appliances to recycling companies and obtain a certification card from the recyclers.
