"They ingest the lead from the environment, either like from (a) carcass that was shot with lead or from lead sinkers that fish swallow," said Betsy Finch, rehabilitation manager at the Raptor Recovery Center.They are asking that hunters change ammo from lead to other types of bullets like copper. Nebraska hunter Douglas Finch made the change and recommends others to do the same. "The copper bullets they retain 95% or better of their weight which transfers that energy into the animal and, in my experience, I think it results in a cleaner kill," Finch said.For now, the dead bald eagle serves as a reminder of change Lewis hopes to see. The 57 officers who resigned only left their roles on the Emergency Response Team and are still with the department.Following the mass resignation, the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association (PBA) released a statement asserting it was a "show of support" with the McCabe and Torgalski. But two of those who resigned — who were granted anonymity for this story — say that's not the case."I don't understand why the union said it's a thing of solidarity. I think it sends the wrong message that 'we're backing our own', and that's not the case," one of the officers said."We quit because our union said [they] aren't legally backing us anymore. So, why would we stand on a line for the city with no legal backing if something [were to] happen? Has nothing to do with us supporting," said a second officer.One officer said that it's likely that many did resign as a show of support, but for many others, "that's not true.""The city, (Erie County District Attorney John Flynn), they're not representing those guys at all. But most of us know how to take care of ourselves," Gell said.She says the best thing that people with asthma or other respiratory ailments can do is know their baseline health."It's really important for the whole airway to be in good shape," Gell said.Asthma patients who find themselves having to use their rescue inhaler more than two times a week may need to re-evaluate how to manage their symptoms. Those patients should contact their physicians."Use your judgment. But if you're an asthmatic that's unstable particularly, that may be a reason to stay home and hunker down," Gell said.How should asthmatics differentiate the symptoms of asthma from those of COVID-19?"The cough may be a little bit more dry in COVID-19. In the last year and a half, Copper was back to being the energetic dog Paoli remembered — until two weeks ago. Paoli's husband was in the backyard playing with Copper when he noticed Copper was walking with a stiff gait. He thought Copper had re-injured his back.After taking him to the veterinarian, they found out Copper was suffering from one of the early signs of leptospirosis."One of the first symptoms of leptospirosis is that they're drinking a ton of water, and then they go out and urinate, and sometimes they have urinary accidents because they're drinking so much water," said Dr. Laura Russell, chief emergency doctor at Colorado Veterinary Specialist & Animal ER in Littleton.Russell helped care for Copper. She says her office usually sees one to two cases of leptospirosis per year. This year, they've seen six.Russell's office isn't alone. 1043
