SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The median price of a home in San Diego County rose by 8 percent in July, compared with the same month a year earlier, a real estate information service announced Thursday.According to CoreLogic, the median price of a San Diego County home was 9,750 last month, up from 7,000 in July 2017. A total of 3,607 homes were sold in the county, down 3.5 percent from 3,739 during the same month the previous year.A total of 21,277 new and resale houses and condos changed hands in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties last month, according to CoreLogic. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Rep. Scott Peters, D-San Diego, Friday called on the federal government to determine and commit to an interim and long-term plan for nuclear waste storage.Peters challenged the rest of the federal government to find a storage solution during a meeting of the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee's Environment and Climate Change Subcommittee.The subcommittee, on which Peters sits, held a hearing on three bills that would establish a process to send spent nuclear fuel rods from decommissioned plants to designated storage areas around the country. To do so, Peters said the government should invoke the Constitution's supremacy clause, which requires states to follow federal law if they have conflicting statutes.``There's not a lot of enthusiasm among the states to accept any defined or undefined amount of nuclear waste. There just isn't,'' Peters said.``To me ... the magic of federalism is the supremacy clause and the ability of the federal government to ... (say) in this geology, per this engineering, (and) through this licensing process that this risk is lower.''Two of the bills the subcommittee considered -- the Spent Fuel Prioritization Act and the Storage and Transportation of Residual and Excess Nuclear Fuel Act -- would directly affect San Diego County by relocating spent nuclear fuel from the defunct San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station to designated storage sites like Yucca Mountain in the Nevada desert.The plant shut down in 2012, but nearly four million pounds of spent fuel cells remain buried under the plant in a temporary storage facility about 100 feet from the Pacific Ocean. The plant sits approximately 60 miles or less from both San Diego and Los Angeles and the storage facility continues to be susceptible to a major earthquake or significant sea level rise.The bills remain in limbo due to pushback from legislators who represent the districts in which spent fuel rods would be stored.However, Peters' office hopes the bills could get a vote out of the committee by the end of the year. 2073
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego-based medical equipment manufacturer ResMed Corp. has agreed to pay more than .5 million to resolve allegations that it paid kickbacks to suppliers, sleeps labs and other health care providers in exchange for referrals and prescriptions for its products, the Department of Justice announced Wednesday.The government accused ResMed of violating the Anti-Kickback Statute of the False Claims Act by providing free or below-cost medical equipment to companies in several states. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 Wednesday in favor of a land annexation agreement for a housing development to be built in an unincorporated area near the city of San Marcos.Representatives San Marcos Highlands told the board that they have worked with numerous federal and state agencies, including the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, and received approval from them.Supervisors Greg Cox, Jim Desmond and Kristin Gaspar voted in favor of the agreement, while Nathan Fletcher and Board Chairwoman Dianne Jacob were opposed.The San Marcos Highlands project calls for 187 single-family homes, one public park, two private parks and 210 acres of open space on the northern end of Las Posas Road stretching north to Buena Creek Road. According to the county, 152.2 acres are in the unincorporated areas of the North County Metropolitan Subregional Plan.According to the county, the annexation agreement "would not cause changes in the San Marcos Highlands project or in the circumstances under which the project is undertaken that involve significant new environmental impacts."One Vista resident asked the board to vote no on the agreement, arguing the development is not a good fit for the area.Desmond said the board was "not here to debate the merits of the project," as it already has formal approval and went through several modifications. He added that San Marcos Highlands will feature an emergency fire evacuation road.Cox said the development has a long-term management plan, open space agreement and easement."I don't see that we need to put any additional roadblocks in front of their project," he said.Jacob said that while she appreciates all the work the developer did on San Marcos Highlands, she couldn't support it."I have a long history (of) opposing projects that take property in the unincorporated area and increase density," she said.Jacob added that the board had previously down-zoned the property where San Marcos Highlands will be built, telling her colleagues that approving the annexation agreement is ignoring that past decision. 2115
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials reported 228 new COVID-19 infections, the smallest daily increase since June 19, raising the county's cumulative caseload to 32,975.No new coronavirus fatalities were reported Monday. The total death toll remains at 594.County health officials also reported five community outbreaks, bringing the number of outbreaks in the past week to 14.The latest outbreaks were reported in a restaurant, a restaurant/bar setting, a government office, a business and a grocery store, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency.The number of community outbreaks remains well above the county's goal of fewer than seven in a seven-day span. A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households in the past 14 days.The number of patients hospitalized for treatment for coronavirus totaled 321 as of Monday, with 101 of those patients in intensive care units. Sunday saw the fewest number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients since June.Of the total positive cases in the county, 2,752 -- or 8.3% -- have required hospitalization since the pandemic began, and 689 -- or 2.1% -- were admitted to an intensive care unit.The county's case rate per 100,000 residents Monday was 101.6. The state's goal is fewer than 100 per 100,000. The case rate is a 14-day average and is based on the date of the actual onset of the illness in each patient, not the date the illness was first reported by the county. Lags in reporting often lead to delays in new confirmed cases being reported to and announced by health officials.The county reported 7,570 tests Sunday, 3% of which returned positive. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 5%. The state's target is fewer than 8.0% testing positive. The seven-day daily average of tests is 8,148.The next scheduled media briefing by county health officials will be Tuesday. No briefing was held Monday due to a county budget hearing.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said last Wednesday that because of problems with the state's electronic reporting system, which has led to a backlog in test results, additional cases might be retroactively added to both local and statewide case totals in coming weeks.The percentage of people testing positive for the illness who have been contacted by a county contact tracer in the first 48 hours increased from 7% on July 18 to 97% Monday. The county's target for this metric is more than 90%.Of the total hospitalized during the pandemic due to the illness, 71% have been 50 or older. But county residents ages 20-29 have accounted for 25.5% of COVID-19 cases, the highest of any age group, according to county data. That age group is also least likely to take precautionary measures to avoid spreading the illness, officials said."Some San Diegans think they're not going to get sick and therefore are not following the public health guidance," Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said last week.
