SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have arrested a 26-year-old in connection with a Logan Heights house fire that killed three of his family members last weekend.Police say Wilber Romero was arrested Friday for homicide and arson in connection with the deaths of his parents 44-year-old Jose Romero and 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero, and his sister 21-year-old Iris Romero in a house fire on Sunday. Romero's mother and sister died at the hospital in the days following the blaze while his father died in the fire. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," Romero said after the blaze.One witness told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through the bars in the windows, unable to escape the fire."The minute I stepped out of my restroom, my house on the inside felt warm, like really warm. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County public health officials said Friday that the region is dangerously close to being placed in the state's most restrictive reopening tier.The county's coronavirus case rate over the last 48 hours was alarming, according to Supervisor Nathan Fletcher."We've been living for most of the last month on the precipice of tiers," Fletcher said. "We now are concerned about the trends and we're concerned about the likelihood that we can tip back into purple."Fletcher says over the last six days, San Diego County's daily unadjusted case rates continue to increase.County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said since the start of this week, the county has seen its unadjusted case rate increase from 7.2 cases per 100,000 residents (7-day daily average from the previous week) on Sunday to 7.8 on Friday. The county's adjusted case rate has increased from 6.8 to 7.0 during the same time span.The last week reported for the county, San Diego reported an unadjusted case rate of 7.2 and an adjusted case rate of 6.8.Fletcher says the unadjusted case rate more closely represents the actual public spread of the coronavirus."The overwhelming majority of San Diegans are doing everything right. But we just have to go that extra mile in order to protect our status in our tier," Fletcher said.According to the state's reopening tier system, counties with a case rate of more than 7.0 and/or testing positivity percentage of 8% or greater for two consecutive weeks are placed in the purple tier, the state's most restrictive.Next Tuesday, Oct. 20, the state will report metrics for Oct. 4-10. Then on Oct. 27, the state will report results from Oct. 11-17.Officials say that's why they're sounding the alarm now, to encourage residents to double down on efforts around slowing the spread. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego firefighters came to the rescue of a Mountain View family after they lost their home to a fire the day after Christmas.The fire left seven people displaced after tearing through the home just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday on Teak Street near Ocean View Boulevard. The fire burned through one of two homes on the lot and the family says they had to pull bars off the window to escape the fire, leaving four people injured.While crews responded and were able to get the fire quickly under control, the family lost everything — including Christmas presents that two little girls who lived in the burned home had unwrapped just one day earlier.That's when San Diego Fire-Rescue stepped in. Sunday, firefighters from Stations 12 and 19 delivered gift cards, toys, and clothing to help the family through their loss. "The gifts were courtesy of the San Diego City Fire Fighters Local 145. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are looking for the husband of a City Heights woman found dead by her sister Monday morning.Police say 45-year-old Abdiaziz Kerow is a person of interest and is sought for questioning by detectives, but has yet to be located.
