The YMCA of Metro Atlanta shut down both locations of its overnight summer camp after a staff member tested positive for coronavirus.Since then, other campers and staff have tested positive. The local YMCA says Camp High Harbour learned a counselor at its Lake Burton location tested positive for coronavirus on June 24.The counselor was immediately sent home, and camp leaders decided to close the Camp High Harbour campgrounds there and at Lake Allatoona. The Georgia Department of Public Health says at least 30 confirmed cases of the virus have been identified from camps at those lakes. The local YMCA notes the camp worked with the CDC and the American Camp Association when it was reopening the camp amid the pandemic. 730

There were more reported coronavirus infections in the United States on Friday than at any other time during the pandemic, according to an analysis of state-level data by the New York Times. There were 82,000 confirmed COVID-19 infections in the US as the virus swamps areas of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. The previous peak of coronavirus cases was 76,000 in a single day set in July. The chief concern of public health officials is the burden on hospitals. While the survival rate of COVID-19 has likely improved since the spring, many of those surviving coronavirus infections are requiring significant stays in the hospital. The New York Times reports that COVID-19 hospitalizations are up 40% in the past month. A risk assessment map compiled by researchers at Harvard lists 21 states in the “red.” States in the red are encouraged to implement economic shutdowns and similar regulations in an effort to limit the spread of the virus. On a per capita basis, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Montana and Idaho are seeing the most prolific spread of the virus. The West Coast, Hawaii, New York and parts of New England have the lowest spread of the virus with fewer than 10 new cases per day per 100,000 people. 1235
Thursday marks National Coming Out Day — an LGBTQ holiday that encourages young queer people to be comfortable with their sexuality and live an open lifestyle.2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the first National Coming Out Day, first celebrated in 1988. According to the Human Rights Campaign, the day was started by gay activists Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary. Recognized by all 50 states, the day is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which took place on Oct. 11, 1987.As a psychologist, Eichberg wrote extensively on the act of "coming out" to friends, family and coworkers. in 1978, he established "The Experience," a community workshop in Los Angeles that encouraged young LGBTQ people to live an openly gay lifestyle among friends and family.According to Eichberg, when LGBTQ people lived an open lifestyle it made their friends and family more likely to be accepting of queer lifestyles. It also encourages other gay people to live openly and helps develop a support network for those who may be struggling with their sexual identities. The Human Rights Campaign has published a resource guide to coming out, which you can read below.
