SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 24-year-old La Jolla man who was wearing a Jesus costume when he sucker-punched a San Diego police officer at a Gaslamp District Halloween street festival was sentenced Thursday to 270 days in jail, which will be served on weekends.Eric Van Vleet, who was arrested in Idaho's Cassia County four days after the Nov. 1, 2019, attack, pleaded guilty last year to a felony count of battery on a peace officer resulting in injury.San Diego County Superior Court Judge Melinda J. Lasater ordered that Van Vleet serve his time in county jail on 35 consecutive three-day weekends, totaling 105 days, with the rest of the time earned through custody credits. SAN DIEGO (CNS and KGTV) - The San Diego City Council Tuesday approved a code amendment that prohibits housing discrimination against applicants using Section 8 vouchers or other rent substitutes. The proposed code amendment blocks landlords from rejecting applicants based solely on voucher status, though they would still retain a right, based on other rental criteria, to choose residents who don't use subsidies.Studies have found that prohibiting income-based discrimination leads to increased neighborhood options for residents and decreased segregation.“Hearing from the community was very powerful and I am happy that the Council approved the ordinance to end housing discrimination taking place in San Diego,” said Councilmember Georgette Gómez. “This is one step towards helping increase access to affordable housing for all San Diegans.”Local California governments with such provisions include Berkeley, Corte Madera, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Marin County, San Francisco, Santa Clara County, Santa Monica and Woodland.San Diego's proposed ordinance also establishes a landlord contingency fund for property damage or lost rent related to renters with vouchers.Implementation of the proposal is expected to take two years. Year one focuses on voluntary compliance as well as landlord outreach and education of the potential benefits of renting to Section 8 users, including consistent on-time rent payments, long-term tenancies, flexible leases and background checks.Year two introduces investigation and enforcement services.More than 15,000 low-income households receive Section 8 assistance through the San Diego Housing Commission. San Diegans will soon have a new, and much more convenient way, to sell their homes.With a few taps on their computers or phones, they could get an all-cash offer from real-estate tracker Zillow for their property.The program, called Zillow Offers, adds speed, convenience and certainty to a process that often requires patience, home staging, visits from complete strangers, and frustration over transactions falling through."What we're trying to do is help homeowners solve one of the biggest problems they have," said Jeremy Wacksman, President of Zillow. "If you're selling and buying at the same time, trying to get all that done and project managing that even with the help of a great agent is hard."Zillow plans to launch the program in San Diego in early 2020. Homeowners would answer a few questions about their property online, getting an initial offer. If interested, they can arrange for an in-home inspection. A day or two after that, they'll get a formal cash offer they can consider. But that certainty comes at a price. Zillow makes its offer based on a variety of factors, including how long they believe they will have to hold the property and what they can sell it for. The company also deducts the costs of any repairs it deems necessary, with no room for negotiation. Typically, their offer comes with a 7 percent fee, which is 1 to 2 percent more than the average commission.Mark Goldman, a loan officer for C-2 Financial, said Zillow's offer likely comes with a cost. "For somebody who needs to do a fast transaction, it might be a suitable option, but you're not going to get top dollar for your house if you're going to do that," he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 30-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a fire hydrant in a neighborhood north of Scripps Ranch, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 4:20 p.m. on Stonebridge Parkway near Stockwood Cove, off Pomerado Road in the Rancho Encantada neighborhood, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim was riding his 2019 Indian Scout motorcycle between 80-100 mph eastbound on Stonebridge Parkway when he lost control at a curve in the road, jumped the curb and slammed into a fire hydrant, Buttle said.The rider was ejected onto the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene, he said. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) — The California Medical Board is looking into a case where a San Diego doctor is accused of using dirty needles on pediatric patients. Newly released documents by the California Medical board states Dr. Bret Robert Gerber used dirty syringes on a 2-year-old and a 10-year-old in July 2016. At the time, Dr. Gerber worked at Scripps Coastal Medical Center in Hillcrest. The documents state a medical assistant reported seeing the doctor bring in two boxes of unauthorized needles from home. Upon closer review, she noticed that the syringes had expired in 2008, and the boxes contained dead insects and what looked to be rodent droppings. Three years before this alleged incident, Dr. Gerber was arrested by Mono County Sheriff's deputies for having psychedelic mushrooms, cocaine, and ecstasy. Deputies found the drugs inside his Winnebago during a traffic stop as the doctor was on his way to the Burning Man Festival. He later admitted to using ecstasy at the festival.Instead of court, Dr. Gerber went through a diversion program and the Medical Board put him on probation. However, in March 2018, documents showed Gerber violated his probation after failing to provide a bodily fluids sample for a drug test. Despite his prior offenses, Dr. Gerber’s medical license was never revoked. Dr. Gerber continues to practice pediatric medicine twice a week, most recently at Mid-City Community Clinic in City Heights. 10News contacted the California Medical Board for comment. Officials said Dr. Gerber now faces multiple charges including gross negligence, repeated negligent acts, failure to maintain accurate medical records, and unprofessional conduct. 1688
