SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seaport Village is seeing a bounce back in foot traffic now that the most stringent of coronavirus-related restrictions have eased.Port of San Diego officials say in the last month, 39,661 people came to the coastal shopping mall. That's more than double the 16,606 people that came through the center in the month after the shutdown order took effect March 13. The port took over management of Seaport Village about two years ago and invested more than million to spruce it up, create more in-person events, and add new tenants. The idea was to reverse the decline in the village, which had seen numerous closures. Ultimately, the port plans to redevelop the property with a hotel, office space, an aquarium, and a spire. "We're really just doing our best to set it up for the future, for us this is the perfect opportunity with all of the interest that we've gotten," said Lucy Contreras, a program manager in the Port's real estate division. In the last year, the Port has signed leases with Geppetto's, Spill the Beans Coffee, Mr. Moto Pizza House, Sam the Cooking Guy for a restaurant, and a Mike Hess Brewing tasting room combined with City Tacos. The duo already has a location in Imperial Beach and will take over a former restaurant spot on the center's western edge overlooking the bay. "Ever since then, and that's been like three and a half years, you tell people we're doing beer and tacos on the beach, beer and tacos on the water, nobody thinks that's a bad idea," Hess said. On Friday, the port signed a lease with the Malibu Farm restaurant for a Seaport Village location. The mall, which canceled many in-person events during the shutdown, started once again offering live music two weeks ago. It also has balcony concerts every Thursday and Saturday. While the foot traffic has increased, it is still down from pre-COVID-19 levels. From February to March 2020, the month before the pandemic hit, the port says 56,516 people came to Seaport Village. The full redevelopment is still at least five years away. 2055

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting this fall, the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine is offering the first-ever certificate program specializing in medical marijuana. The three-semester class promises to teach health care professionals the basics of medical cannabis, so they can begin to use it in their practice."We thought it was important for health care professionals to have objective information about medical marijuana," says school President Jack Miller.Miller says part of the program's purpose is to help dispel some of the myths surrounding medical marijuana."There's a lot of misinformation," Miller says. "If CBD worked for everything that people said it worked for, we wouldn't need another medicine. It seems like the claims are that it will help everything. But really a lot more research needs to be done."Across town, that research is happening. UC San Diego's Center for Medical Cannabis Research has been studying the benefits of the drug since 2000."It's clear from our research and other people's work that there are some medicinal properties to compounds within marijuana," says CMCR Director Dr. Igor Grant. But, Grant cautions that it still may be too soon to have a degree program focused on medical marijuana."There are some things we know, but a lot of things we don't," he says. "It would be interesting to see what their (PCOM) curriculum is."RELATED: Medical marijuana drugs slowed by research, approval gridlockPacific College's website says the certificate program focuses on the endocannabinoid system and its effects on the human body. They also teach doctors how to advise and prescribe the drug to patients.Stefanie Gaines, one of the first students to take the course, says she's excited about adding marijuana-based treatments to her practice in acupuncture."I think the future is looking awesome for medical cannabis," she says. 1871

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some parents in Poway are teaming up to help their kids when the school year begins with virtual learning in a few weeks. In the spring, when Ellie, 6, and her brother Ethan, 7, were learning Spanish while distance learning, their father, a college professor, and mother, a lawyer, were working from home."I had my daughter to my left. I had my computer in the middle, and my son at my right. So when they had questions, which was constant, I could help them," said Testa.Testa says the end result was stressful.WATCH - ASK THE EXPERTS: What we know about coronavirus and children, with Dr. Abi Olulade"Trying to get kids to stay in front of computer and stay focused for an extended period of time was a challenge. When you're working full-time, its a constant interruption because they do need assistance at that age," said Testa. The mental juggling is a distraction for her own work."We are working long days and weekends to make up for it," said Testa. So when she and her husband were planning for the upcoming school year at Valley Elementary, they knew they needed help."It's a total of three families and it's families we know and trust," said Testa.WATCH - ASK THE EXPERTS: Susie Walton talks about managing home schoolThose other families all have kids in the same school, and same grades, as her children. Julie says they're planning on forming a rotating micro-school of sorts.Every third day, each household will take a turn hosting all eight kids, guiding them through the day of virtual learning."You have parents able to dedicate the time to make sure kids stay on task, take them outside and play when it's recess time ... make sure the kids are sticking to lunch and snack schedules," said Testa.Julie says their micro-schooling offers something that is in short supply with distance learning.WATCH - ASK THE EXPERTS: Virtual Steam Academy, resources and how to do science at home"Critical time for them when it comes to reading and math. Somebody needs to be there to review your work. With the distance learning, I believe they will have some one-on-one time but the majority of the time, they're still going to be working on their own," said Testa.Testa hopes the parental 'co-op' approach will give the parents a break and their kids a chance to socialize."We haven't figured out everything yet, but the will kids be bringing on their own lunches. No sharing of food. They'll be washing their hands a lot," said Testa.Testa says it may not be realistic to keep kids at that age from interacting from each other. She'll be relying on the other parents to be honest about any signs of illness."We trust each other to follow the health protocols," said Testa.Their school year is set to begin August 2. 2746
