CHICAGO (AP) — Religious leaders across the country used their pulpits Sunday to quell concerns in immigrant communities and spring into action as nationwide immigration enforcement sweeps loomed.A Chicago priest talked during his homily about the compassion of a border activist accused of harboring illegal immigrants, while another city church advertised a "deportation defense workshop." Dozens of Houston churches offered sanctuary to anyone afraid of being arrested. In Miami, activists handed out fliers outside churches to help immigrants know their rights in case of an arrest."We're living in a time where the law may permit the government to do certain things but that doesn't necessarily make it right," said the Rev. John Celichowski of St. Clare de Montefalco Parish in Chicago. His nearly 1,000-member congregation is 90 percent Hispanic and mostly immigrant. While federal immigration officials were mum on details, agents had been expected start a coordinated action Sunday targeting roughly 2,000 people, including families, with final deportation orders in 10 major cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Miami.Activists and city officials reported some U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in New York and Houston a day earlier, but it was unclear if it was part of the same operation. An ICE spokesman didn't return a request for comment Sunday. The renewed threat of mass deportations has put immigrant communities even more on edge since Trump took office on a pledge to deport millions living in the country illegally. In Los Angeles, the Rev. Fred Morris looked out over his congregation at the North Hills United Methodist Hispanic Mission and was relieved to see everyone who usually attends the early Sunday morning service. He had been worried many would stay home, fearing Trump's threat of immigration sweeps."Everybody is nervous," Morris said. "They are angry, very angry at being terrorized by our president."___Associated Press writer Claire Galofaro in Louisville, Kentucky, and Adriana Gomez in Miami contributed to this report. 2097

Carnival Cruise Line announced Thursday that most of its remaining US-based cruises for 2020 have been canceled due to coronavirus concerns. The cruise line canceled all cruises originating from US ports except for those leaving Miami and Port Carnival during November and December. Carnival said Thursday that it’s possible all remaining cruises in the US will be canceled amid the pandemic.“As we have said throughout this pause, our return to operations will be gradual and phased in. And while we are not making any presumptions, once cruising is allowed, we will center our initial start-up from the homeports of Miami and Port Canaveral,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “The health and safety of our guests, crew and communities we serve remain the cornerstone of our plans and decisions. The patience and support of our guests and travel agent partners have been a huge motivation to our team as we have worked through this unprecedented situation and we are dedicated to getting back to operations when the time is right.”Anyone with a Carnival cruise reservation in 2020 has the ability to voluntarily cancel their reservation, which includes a combination future cruise credit and onboard credit, or a full refund.Late Wednesday, the CDC extended a no-sail order through October 31 on all cruises in US waters carrying 250 or more passengers. The CDC said it has identified at least 3,689 coronavirus-related illnesses, and 41 associated deaths, although the CDC cautions these figures are likely an underestimate.“On cruise ships, passengers and crew share spaces that are more crowded than most urban settings,” the CDC said. 1669

Bulgarian authorities are investigating the rape and murder of an investigative reporter in the northern city of Ruse, the third journalist to have been killed in the EU this year. The body of 30-year-old Viktoria Marinova was found on Saturday near a pedestrian alley in an area with heavy vegetation, Bulgarian state media reported.Preliminary investigations showed the cause of death was blows to the head and suffocation.Bulgarian Interior Minister Mladen Mladenov described the murder as "exceptionally brutal" and said Marinova was raped before she was killed, according to state media. He said the country's top murder investigators had been sent to Ruse to work on the case. It's not clear if Marinova's murder was related to her journalistic work. Authorities are working to identify witnesses and potential motives for her murder.Bulgarian media reports said that over the last year Marinova had reported on an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption involving European Union funds for the broadcaster TVN. She also worked on a program focusing on social issues and was involved with charity work. 1119

CALEXICO, Calif. (KGTV) - Nearly two and a half miles of the current border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border in Calexico are being replaced with 30-foot high, bollard-style walls. The section of the replacement, which broke ground last week, extends from the Calexico Port of Entry westward just past Gran Plaza Outlets, according to Customs and Border Protection officials. The project also includes 2.25 miles of all-weather roads.CBP officials tweeted out photos of the construction Thursday, saying "replacement project in Calexico is going well. 30-foot tall steel bollard wall is stacked on the ground waiting to be installed after the removal of old landing mat barrier."RELATED: President Trump to visit San Diego, inspect border wall prototypesThe section under construction was built in the 1990s out of recycled metal scraps and old landing mat. While officials said the wall has proven effective, "smuggling organizations damaged and breached this outdated version of a border wall several hundred times during the last two years," resulting in costly repairs. The construction is separate from President Donald Trump's promised wall across the border. The project is the first border construction contract awarded by the Trump administration, aside from the eight prototypes for a new wall built near Otay Mesa last year.INTERACTIVE TIMELINE: President Trump's border wallThe president is expected to make a visit to view the prototypes sometime in March. While a federal judge sided with the Trump administration in a lawsuit against the wall by environmental groups and California, Trump tweeted California's portion of the wall is on hold until the entire wall is approved. 1749
