UNION, N.J. — Bed Bath & Beyond says it’s cutting 2,800 jobs at its New Jersey corporate headquarters and stores — about 5% of its overall workforce — as the ailing retailer looks to move more of its business online.The company says the move will save it about 0 million a year, before taxes. Two Tennessee lawmakers have proposed a bill that would end child marriage in Tennessee.According to a press release Monday, the bill would make marriage age 18 and up – with no exceptions.The bills are sponsored by Sen. Jeff Yarbro and Rep. Darren Jernigan.According to the Pew Research Center, Tennessee is tied for the 6th-highest rate of child marriage.The current law allows 16 and 17-year-olds to marry when parents join in the marriage license application. Judges or county mayors may also approve marriages of people younger than 16, with no minimum age, according to a release.  "Current Tennessee law, would allow either a county elected official or a county judge to approve a marriage for a 15 year old, 14 year old, 9 year old," said Sen. Yarbo. "We think that is relatively insane."The founder of Unchained At Last, Fraidy Reiss, also claimed girls as young as 10 years old were married to men in their 20s in Tennessee. The organization collected marriage license data from 38 states and found that Tennessee has married thousands of children.  1097

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (KGTV) - The family of a Navy corpsman who died on a Southern California military base is alleging a possible coverup by members of the military following this week’s announcement from the Marines that a servicemember has been charged in connection with the death investigation.ABC10 News investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner first broke the story in 2019 after learning that the sudden death of 30-year-old HM3 Michael Vincent De Leon was being investigated as a homicide, not a suicide, like the family said they were led to believe. The Navy corpsman, or medic, died last summer on the Twentynine Palms military base, located a few hours northeast of San Diego.On Thursday, ABC10 News spoke to parents Jose and Sandra De Leon. They were overcome with emotion after learning about the new charges. “The good news in all of this is that the long wait has not been in vain," said Jose. Sandra added, “Sometimes I just listen to [my son's] recordings just to hear his voice."On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Marines sent ABC10 News the following statement:“As you might know, this incident is still under investigation. I can confirm, however, that charges have been preferred against one of the individuals for dereliction of duty resulting in death and dereliction of duty. A hearing is not scheduled at this time. The other individuals are being investigated. I will keep you updated once we receive more information.”De Leon’s parents first contacted ABC10 News for help last year after claiming that the military stonewalled them from getting answers about their son's death. They said that Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) would only tell them that there was a shooting on base at a housing unit with other corpsmen present and a firearm was produced.ABC10 News then learned from a source with close military ties that NCIS confirmed the death was being investigated as a homicide, not a suicide.“The phone call from that residence using my son’s phone was that it was a suicide,” Jose said on Thursday. He added that prosecutors told him the servicemember charged is a Navy corpsman who was at a house party on base with his son and other corpsmen. He said prosecutors also told him that some of those corpsmen are likely facing upcoming charges.He added Thursday, “We know that the firearm was dry fired at Michael. The firearm was put away and it came out again and according to some statements they were horsing around and the firearm came out again and that's when Michael was killed.” “These men need to be held accountable for what they did...for their actions, for their lack of courage and for their lack of honor,” added Sandra.A spokesperson for NCIS reported this week that the investigation is still open. UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Calif. (KGTV) - Neighbors in University Heights say the city needs to do more to clear dead brush from a canyon along Washington Street.The canyon, often called "Camelot Canyon," runs east from the 163 and underneath the popular Vermont Street bridge.People who live nearby say the brush underneath, combined with homeless encampments, creates a fire hazard.Their fears came true last March when a massive fire broke out among the palm trees near the bridge. In the aftermath, the fire department ordered CalTrans and the City of San Diego to remove dead brush from the canyon.Neighbors say they didn't do enough."We're trying to get them to finish the job and help suppress wildfires," says Marybeth Chruden. Her group is hoping to present at least 1,000 signatures to the City Council at an upcoming meeting."If a fire starts in the middle of the night and nobody catches it in time, the palm trees go up, the eucalyptus trees go up, and we could have another fire like what happened in Paradise," says Andy Lange, referencing the fire in Northern California that burned thousands of homes.The Fire Department says clean up is complicated in the canyon. Part of it is owned and maintained by CalTrans. The rest is city property.According to Assistant Fire Marshall Eddie Villavicencio, city crews did two cleanups after last spring's fire; one in April and another in July. The delay between the two was a result of waiting for more funding. Also, city code only allowed the crews to clear out dead or dying vegetation, nothing more.Villavicencio also says the canyon is designated as Open Space and supposed to be left alone to let nature take over. Because of that, there is no requirement for the city to maintain the brush.CalTrans, meanwhile, has different requirements for their land in the canyon. Chruden and her group say the CalTrans land is maintained and kept clear.Villavicencio says the Fire Department is always looking for grants to help fund more cleanups in these areas. He also mentions a bigger problem is the homeless camps in canyons, which are typically the cause of fires. That part of the issue is a police and enforcement matter.Chruden's group says those explanations serve as further proof that the city needs to fund this kind of regular maintenance."This is such a wonderful neighborhood, such a good community, and we take pride in it," says Debora Morrison, who has spent time gathering signatures on the bridge. Update, Aug. 8, 10:15 a.m. The victim's fiancee notified 10News of his death Wednesday night, saying "Steven Johnson went on to be a hero to save other lives."LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Loved ones are making a gut-wrenching plea for tips after a hit-and-run crash that left a man on life support, days before his wedding day."I don't know what to do without him," said Sami Johnson, the daughter of Steven Johnson"I'm heartbroken. He was my everything," said Karlene Moen, Johnson's fiancee.Johnson - a father of six and a grandfather - was riding his motorcycle to work at a Lakeside trucking company Friday when he crashed around 5:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 67 just past Willows Road. His first call was to his fiancee."He sounded hurt. He sounded scared, and he was pissed off," said Moen.He posted photos of his injured leg on Facebook. He told Moen a woman in a car cut him off, causing him to crash."He said, 'We locked eyes. She knows I was there ... She just left me and left me laying in the road,'" said Moen. Soon after the accident, he developed chest pains. He was rushed into surgery with a torn aorta. On Sunday morning, Johnson went into cardiac arrest. He was revived but suffered severe brain damage. He was placed on life support. Moen says the he will be taken off life support in the coming days, and his organs will be donated.His wedding planned for Saturday will now be a 'Celebration of Life' service."He'll never see me in my wedding dress that I bought especially for him," said a tearful Moen.She's hoping the driver that caused the crash will be identified.We just want justice. We want her to know she killed him and left him there," said Moen."Who could leave my dad in the road?
